My breasts had been a nuisance all my adult life,...

My breasts had been a nuisance all my adult life, but I'd put up with them, and weighed only about 112lbs (because I smoked and drank too much alcohol without eating properly.) Then I gave up smoking and drinking about 4 years ago and gained about 50lb through eating unwisely. Bra size increased from 34G to 36HH - I was uncomfortable and I hated my appearance. So I arranged to have a breast reduction (I was aged 61.) I consulted only one surgeon - in retrospect I wish I had seen at least one other! - my surgeon gets good results, but I found him difficult to communicate with. This was particularly so when discussing the size I hoped my breasts would be. He would not express his intentions in terms of cup sizes, and nor were any photographs displayed. I had hoped to have my breasts made as small as possible (perhaps a C cup, I thought.) He said he would aim to remove 50% of the volume, but I couldn't envisage the likely appearance afterwards. In the event, he removed 837gm from the left breast and 817gm from the right. I had been wearing a very tight bra band prior to surgery and now wear a 38DD or 40D (depending on brand.) Following the operation, I had a series of appointments for aftercare, and we often discussed the fact that my breasts were larger than I'd hoped, (and that the left was persistently slightly larger than the right). However, I was told by my surgeon and also by another whom I consulted, that it would not be possible to reduce the area of my breasts where they join my chest, so making them smaller would lead to my having 2 flatter mounds which could be achieved, but which I might not like aesthetically. I also continued to gain weight post-operatively, so I was concerned that my tummy was beginning to stick out further than my breasts! I managed to lose only 10lb by dieting, and have regained it since I allowed my diet to lapse. I'm not sure whether your surgeon will allow you to choose your size, but thought I'd get in touch to describe my own experience. It's now about 17 months since my breast reduction, and I've recently had a liposuction procedure with the aim of improving the symmetry of my breasts, and a revision of the scar to my left cleavage which was forming an excessively deep fold where I was getting troublesome intertrigo. (This amount of revision was allowed without further cost to me.)
