I was nearly flat chested until I was 17... and then... I have this distinct memory of chasing my friend's little nephew down the beach to which she said "Better be careful, or you'll give yourself a black eye with those things". It was in that moment that I realized that somehow, the body I thought I knew, wasn't the reality. I had 32D's seemingly overnight.

And, just like everyone else, they got bigger and bigger, and my self esteem dropped lower and lower, as the clothes/look I aspired to have and activities I wanted to partake in became impossible. And then the pain started.

Neck spasms, numbness in my hands and elbows, shooting neck pain, lines and heat rashes under my boobs. Then the chaffing and rubbing and sweat.

So, finally, after years of considering and never really pursuing this procedure, I decided to stop dragging my feet and making excuses and get the damned thing done!

Since REALLY deciding about 2 weeks ago, everything has just fallen right into place! I currently live overseas but found a doc in my hometown that's willing to do Skype consultations and work with my insurance provide on my behalf. The staff there has been amazingly helpful and understanding so far (though I'm going to withhold the name of the practice until everything is official). My husband is super supportive, as are my family and friends, and I feel like every little hiccup has somehow turned into a blessing and been worked into making this thing actually happen!

I'm supposed to hear back from the Patient Care Coordinator tomorrow about whether or not insurance will officially approve my procedure on the basis of Medical Necessity, and then its just a few weeks, a plane ride, and a quick nip and tuck!

I can't wait to get really into HITT exercises and running again (stuff I LOVE but my boobs can't handle), and wear the things I've never been able to wear without looking like I'm either 500 pounds or a [RS bleep] star (HELLO TURTLENECK SWEATERS AND BRALETTES). I'm over the MOON at the idea of not having the constant ache and shooting pain anymore!

Wish me luck, I'm so freakin excited!

Yay! Good for you, you will have lots of years to experience the freedom that goes with smaller breasts. I got mine done 4 months ago and it is the best thing ever. I still have yet to buy a turtleneck sweater (on my list though!) but being able to fit into normal cut clothes and not have the boobs (or the giant granny bra) ruin the whole thing, is fabulous. Good for you doing it NOW, as my only regret is that I didn't do it decades ago. DO be sure and be realistic about the recovery time involved. While your youth is an advantage, you still need to allow enough time to increase your activities slowly and gradually. Too much activity early on can cause problems with the healing process, so better to invest the time now and you will have the rest of your life to enjoy!

Great advice! I definitely am hoping that age, and my generally pretty good health, will speed the healing process a bit... but I definitely need to be reminded to not try to jump back into the saddle too quickly!

Did you find the immediate recovery to her worse or better than expected?? I'm not too nervous about the pain in those first days and weeks after, but I do was to be as prepared and realistic as possible, you know?

For the most part I would say it was better than I anticipated. I felt pretty good right away, but some of that was the drugs...:-) I actually felt "too good" in about the second and third week, and started overdoing things, trying to do too much around the house etc. Because it was summer time, and also my husband had just started a new job and was REALLY busy, I had a hard time just relaxing and doing nothing (as I had been instructed!). So a little too much this and that and I ended up having some free fluid (seroma) that had to be needle aspirated a couple of times. Nothing too severe, but just a word to the wise not to try to start working out and stuff TOO fast. Err on the side of caution with your activity level. At 4 months I still have some tenderness inside my breasts, and am waiting for a compression strap to arrive to try for running. I feel pretty comfortable for the most part but running and jumping cause too much jarring, and I get a little sore-I haven't been able to find a bra for this that doesn't feel like it's too tight everywhere else but where I need it to be (above the breasts). Interestingly I didn't have that kind of soreness early on, but I think that's because there was more numbness. Once things start healing internally and the nerves regenerate it feels different. That said, you may have a totally different experience than I did, so just take it one day at a time and listen closely to your body!

A little longer of a wait, but that's okay!

I spoke with the Patient Care coordinator today, and made semi-permanent plans for 1/30. However, it does look like she won't be able to submit a prior authorization request to my insurance until after my official consultation.

She's pretty sure that I'll be covered, and I spoke with my insurance and they made it seem like I should be covered too... but for some reason, I'm really scared that my insurance will come back and deny it! The waiting until next week to know for sure, is killer as well.

Has anyone in VA had Anthem healthekeepers either deny or approve a medically necessary reduction before? Were they difficult to deal with?!

I'm trying not to get too disheartened or anxious.....
