WORTH IT
For many years I've had difficulty breathing through my nose along with some appearance related issues. As a result I developed chronic insomnia which negatively affected my life. Since I had been advised that surgery should be a last resort, I tried all sorts of things which actually made the problem worse--eg sleeping more upright to improve breathing caused a neck injury and sciatica. I finally decided to see Dr Alexander to correct the breathing issues and improve the general appearance of my nose. It's now 3 months post op and I'm very glad to have taken this step. I have had a very natural looking functional rhinoplasty and I can now breathe at night. I still have allergies but the allergy meds now work where they weren't working before. I don't wake up at night unable to breathe! Grateful to Dr. Alexander for the improvements and happy that I did take this step.

Response from Dr. Alexander:
Thank you for sharing the beginning of what sounds like a very personal and challenging journey. Chronic insomnia from breathing difficulties and the cascade of problems that followed - including the neck injury and sciatica from trying to sleep upright - really illustrates how much nasal issues can impact your entire quality of life. We completely understand how frustrating it must have been to try various solutions that actually made things worse, especially when you were told surgery should be a last resort. Many of our patients have similar stories of struggling for years before finally finding relief through surgical intervention. We'd love to hear more about your experience and how things turned out for you. Your story could be incredibly helpful for other patients who might be facing similar challenges.

Things have continued very well. I'm glad to be able to carry with normal activities like driving the car (which I couldn't always do when severe sleep deprivation took hold), and getting involved with activities that I enjoy without the concern that I may be unable to follow through. I guess perhaps the fact that nasal steroids used to work and then stopped working for no obvious reason was a red flag that the problem was physical and no amount of allergy medication or changing brands or saline, would work. I think this is important for doctors to consider when advising patients.
