Poor Blepharoplasty Results - Stockbridge, GA

Hereditary under eye bags. Dr. G performed...

Hereditary under eye bags.

Dr. G performed upper and lower blepharoplasty on me more than 10 years ago.  He took too much skin from my lower lids and not enough from my upper lids.  I was left disfigured and was forced to have corrective surgery 18 months later.

My once almond shaped eyes are now round (even after correction).  My left eye doesn't close completely, and I have bulging cartilage grafts in my lower lids.  Dr. G did refund the surgical fee, but I spent 5 times that on a corrective procedure.  I expect he has more surgical skill this far in his career, but it is not worth the risk where your eyes are concerned.

Thank you for sharing your story. The blepharoplasty is such a tricky surgery; so easy to screw up and it is the patient who must suffer.

Hi iris -- I'm sorry to hear about the troubles you've had. Have you had any success with revision surgeries?

I had eyelid surgery 9 years ago and I looked clown like! My eyes could have used some fatty tissue removed but when doctors start cutting on the Lavator muscle, you really must know what you are doing. Of course, this doctor tried a correction that didnt work so then I had to go to another doctor who did the repair work but once the levator is cut a couple of times, its difficult to repair as when too many repairs are tried, the eyes can do funny things. My eyes are very deep set and forgiving so what is not forgiven is altered with make up. Luckily I am good with it.
Maybe if you are having someone like the great James Carraway in Va Beach do your surgery, would I ever recommend the levator muscle cut. Hes the expert.

Why do people not post photos of the midface? Is everyone on realself in the witness protection program? It is impossible to identify anyone with a "cropped" photo of the mid area of the face.

I had a good laugh with ur comment, I am to sick of people not showing photos, what is the point of the review if I can't see what they mean….there is also difference between botched surgery and expectation not met...

Yes, indeed very frustrating with these people sometimes... I had a couple of shots of rum by the time I started posting since, at the time, was becoming a joke to read several reviews that only describe poor quality but without showing evidence or naming the Dr. that should be avoided, the post is simple worthless to what I am trying to find out.

Do try to be a bit more sensitive to the people who are unhappy with their results. Unless you have actually walked in their shoes you have no idea how traumatizing it is to feel that your appearance has been ruined instead of being enhanced. They are probably on this forum more for support and their own sanity rather than for your need to get details. I don't mean to be harsh I just want to point out that these people are in a completely different world than you could ever imagine.

I totally understand, where you come from, my comment wasn't to upset anybody ,and yes you right, this site is also for support but I think people would get more support and advise perhaps if they actually show what they unhappy about. With all the respect but this site is also for educational purposes, so everyone can make the best possible decision an avoid tragedies like that. I feel for all the upset persons here not happy with the results and I wish them all the best.regards

There is nothing insensitive about my comment. The whole point is to "see" the results so I can make a better informed decision and not have to "walk in their shoes" That is the point of this forum, to learn, and to be informative as much as possible. It is hardly informative if the person who had a "bad procedure" doesn't post photos to truly help others with as much information as possible which will serve to paint a picture of what is good and not good. Do you think anyone who goes to a Dr. wouldn't want to see photos of the prior patients work? Of course they do. Without photos many of these posts are not very helpful. There is nothing insenstive at all about what I wrote. I feel for anyone who has had bad results however, if it were me that to which that happend, I would go above and beyond to educate new folks on RealSelf with several good photos and text and what I learned, to prevent others from having that happen.

Yes, it is so unfortunate that post-op people want to share their experience and warn others but their feelings of self-worth are so incredibly low that they can't bear to show their whole face. What any prospective plastic surgery patient can take away from this is that having your face altered is a huge gamble. If you end up unhappy with the results you may never emotionally or physically recover. And, believe me, no amount of research will fully protect you. It's Russian Roulette. Sounds dark but that is my personal conclusion. Also, I've learned that pictures don't convey the nuances that post-op people may be upset about. It's just so hard to figure out! Best of luck to you and all others considering surgery.

Yes that is very true.... however, in my first original reply I was very specific when I said ""cropped" photo of the mid area of the face" that way no one can identify. Obviously it is a gamble, I know that. However, in life, more information is always better than less.

I know that when you are looking into having surgery you want to find as much information as possible and it can be frustrating to read through a lot of reviews that might not give you the information that you specifically are looking for.  However, please keep in mind that everyone writes a review for their own reasons.  Some people prefer to really only talk about their doctor, some people give a day by day journal of the entire process, and some people are somewhere in-between.  Providing any sort of picture is at the discretion of the reviewer and is by no means a requirement.  If you read a review that you didn't find particularly helpful you can ask questions to get more info or you can move on to a different review.  Either way, please be respectful of the person who took the time to write a review- even if it didn't answer the questions you wanted it to.  Criticizing someone's review will not make them eager to add photos or write more.

If you find a review that you find particularly helpful you can click on the "Yes" button next to the "Was this review helpful?" at the very end of the review under the doctor info.

Jill, I don't think I criticized the review. Being frustrated and wishing for photos and Explaining why and how it can be VERY helpful to others... is somehow critical? I don't understand. Texts, emails, typed messages, it is hard to convey tone and meaning. I am not criticizing, only describing why photos are much more helpful than text. I have seen a before and after review where the person described the result as poor but after looking at the photos I saw definite improvement... that was a case in which the photos told a different story. You are correct there is a "Yes" button to confirm if the review is helpful, however, where is the button that says "No" it is not that helpful. Please re-read my words and you may perhaps feel that I am mostly only trying to convey why photos can be a HUGE factor in deciding what is good or not. Think about it.... if you visited a website of a plastic surgeon who only "described" how good he is but offered no photos of the work, would anyone even consider the information as nearly as valuable as if it contained photos or "cropped" photos of the procedure? I guess I am just the type of person that goes out of my way to be helpful to others, and I certainly don't understand why taking photos of before and after is too much to want folks to do. I would be willing to bet that the "reviewer" sought out before and after photos to help with the decision process.

Many people do not tell their friends and family that they are having surgery and wish to remain anonymous but still want to write about their experience.

I agree that typed messages can be void of tone and understand if your intention is not to sound critical, but please be mindful that it can easily sound that way.

I'm not sure if you have tried this already or not- but you can filter reviews to whatever specifications you want by going to the surgery main page:

http://www.realself.com/reviews/eyelid-surgery

And then use the drop down menus that appear right above the first review.

Since I know you want to see pictures you can also check this out:

If you need some help looking for reviews or if you have any further concerns please feel free to send me a PM and I will do my best to help.
