My midline post op - this has now been corrected with further orthodontics

I had upper jaw surgery to correct my underbite 9...

I had upper jaw surgery to correct my underbite 9 months ago. I was born/live in the UK so I went through the NHS for my orthodontics and treatment and am still receiving Orthodontics approaching 9 months post surgery and had over 6 years of orthodontics prior to surgery. The reason for this was due to the waiting lists with the NHS and also due to fact I had a change or Orthodontists mid way through.

My operation was around 3 hours and was a sucessful operation. My Surgeon decided to give me a slight overjet as he believed this would give me the overall best result, and also this helps to avoid an relapse after the treatment. I had my jaw elastics on for just under 6 weeks. The reason for this extreme decision was because I had incredibly thick bones, and the surgeopn wanted to make sure I healed properly. I totally rate this, and for nayone considering trying to take the elastics off sooner - persevere. Although I was totally starving on my liquid diet, I had the full 6 weeks off work and recovered well, as well as this but I can honestly say I have had no problems after surgery - no movement of the bone what-so-ever and am now on my normal diet with improved range of chewing abilities!

After the surgery I was left with a slight miss-alignment (think Tom Cruise bite) and this was the only thing I was unhappy about, but I received further orthodontics, and this is now nearly perfect. My orthodontist is brilliant, and he managed to make room and move my top teeth along so that they now totally line up with my centreline and lower teeth.

I also have an improved profile since surgery. Although this wasn't my main goal, I did have a very under pronounce top jaw which made my profile look sunkern. I now am really happy with the result and would recommend this surgery and treatment to ANYONE who suffers from the same facial deformity.

The only thing I must say is, despite the fact that I pay National Health contributions out of my monthly salary which meant I could receive this expensive treatement on the NHS, the waiting times were awful. After 6 and half years I finally decided to write to my local MP and this helped to push me forward as it seemed I had been forgotten about. So if you too have waited a very long time, I recommend proceeding with the NHS complaints process.
