WORTH IT
I had upper jaw surgery to correct my underbite 9 months ago. I was born/live in the UK so I went through the NHS for my orthodontics and treatment and am still receiving Orthodontics approaching 9 months post surgery and had over 6 years of orthodontics prior to surgery. The reason for this was due to the waiting lists with the NHS and also due to fact I had a change or Orthodontists mid way through.

My operation was around 3 hours and was a sucessful operation. My Surgeon decided to give me a slight overjet as he believed this would give me the overall best result, and also this helps to avoid an relapse after the treatment. I had my jaw elastics on for just under 6 weeks. The reason for this extreme decision was because I had incredibly thick bones, and the surgeopn wanted to make sure I healed properly. I totally rate this, and for nayone considering trying to take the elastics off sooner - persevere. Although I was totally starving on my liquid diet, I had the full 6 weeks off work and recovered well, as well as this but I can honestly say I have had no problems after surgery - no movement of the bone what-so-ever and am now on my normal diet with improved range of chewing abilities!

After the surgery I was left with a slight miss-alignment (think Tom Cruise bite) and this was the only thing I was unhappy about, but I received further orthodontics, and this is now nearly perfect. My orthodontist is brilliant, and he managed to make room and move my top teeth along so that they now totally line up with my centreline and lower teeth.

I also have an improved profile since surgery. Although this wasn't my main goal, I did have a very under pronounce top jaw which made my profile look sunkern. I now am really happy with the result and would recommend this surgery and treatment to ANYONE who suffers from the same facial deformity.

The only thing I must say is, despite the fact that I pay National Health contributions out of my monthly salary which meant I could receive this expensive treatement on the NHS, the waiting times were awful. After 6 and half years I finally decided to write to my local MP and this helped to push me forward as it seemed I had been forgotten about. So if you too have waited a very long time, I recommend proceeding with the NHS complaints process.

Hi, congrats on a great result. I'm scheduled for double jaw surgery in April. The one concern I have is that my lower mid line is off by well over 1mm and if the lower jaw is put into the correct alignment during surgery it will mean my lower jaw is effectively lopsided by 1mm+. You mentioned that your mid-line was corrected post op. Did this mean you had a lopsided jaw/bite until the correction was completed? Congrats again, your side profile looks great by the way, at least from what I can see on your profile pic.

Hi Aidan Thanks :) that pic is about 9 weeks post op. I'm very happy with the results. The before pic was taken the day before surgery, so yo ucan really see the contrast :-S Good luck with your surgery, I imagine the recovery time for you will be a little more than mine, but you will notice a more dramatic result with both jaws being operated on. I'm sure you'll be very happy with the results. Yes my midline was off by quite a bit, about 3mm pre-op and then after the op - although it didn't look severe it was still about 2mm (maybe a bit more but it's difficult to remember). The surgeon didn't correct this, as you said, if he had done this to me my jaw would have looked ascew, and my jaw itself was in the correct position. I can see if I can post a picture to show you. Anyway, I digress - After the operation and the elastics came off my surgeon examined me again, and was happy with his decision not to move my jaw. We had a consultation with my orthodontist, who said he'd correct this with further treatment. For me, the way we did this was to rotate one of my molars slightly (which was slightly turned) and this created more space, he then trimmed down one of my teeth slightly too (as I have huge front teeth!) and this created enough room. It's taken about 5 months to move the teeth, as he literally had to chain the teeth together and drag them over. I'm nearly there now and my midline is nearly spot on. I believe it can be quite difficult to achieve, but my orthodontic has managed to do it, so I'm sure yours can too.

Awesome, thanks for the info. That puts me at ease a lot. My surgeon doesn't answer emails or calls and I'll only see him once more before the op so I'd like to understand all of this beforehand. I don't want to leave the consultation having forgotten to get clarification on anything. All the best with your new bite (and side profile!) and thanks again! :)

How long did it take for your braces to come off or are you still wearing them?

Hi there, yes I am about 9 months post op, and still in braces. This isn't usual but I had some mid centre teeth alignment issues (which you can see in one of my pics) and I wanted to correct this, but I shouldn't have them on for much longer now. Maybe a couple more months!

Oh good! Yeah my orthodontist told me I will be in them for 6 more months after the surgery but this was told to me before I had the surgery so I don't know what the outcome will be now. But I do know I need some more work on my braces for my upper teeth to line up perfect with my bottom, kind of like yours.

Well it might be better for you. I was told 6 months too, but sometimes things take a little longer than you expect and if you wait 6 weeks before each appointment like I do, the months just run away!

Lol yeah I have to go back next week. Sucks cause I have to travel to another state for my appointments.

You look wonderful. You are very lucky to have had your surgery and orthodontics on the NHS. I have paid NI Contributions for 35 years, have an overbite in excess of 12 mm and I was turned down. NHS for you!!

Sorry for such a delayed reply. I'm shocked to find out you were turned down. This treatment is free on the NHS as it is considered a type of deformity (sorry - but it's true - my Surgeon told me this!). My advise would be to go to another dentist who may refer you. When I had my surgery there were many people of all ages receiving treatment. I began treatment at 15, but it wasn't until I was 23/24 that I had the surgery. Good luck!

Thanks for sharing. You look great! I've had pretty much the exact same surgery just 3 weeks ago and although I'm not loving my profile just yet I'm hopeful that there is still some swelling and this will improve in the coming weeks.

Hi Claire

Hope it's going well and you are managing ok with the liquid diet :)

Your swelling will definitely improve. It's been a few weeks since you messaged and I bet that it's dramatically reduced since then. I bet you have heaps of confidence with your new profile. :)
