55 Year Old - It's Getting Too Hard on my Shoulders and Neck. Saint Cloud, MN

I am 55, 5'6.5" tall, 170 Pounds, 36F/G According to the measurements when I had my self measured, I should be wearing a 36 F or G. I have always bought bra's with stretchy cups and wide straps but that just isn't enough anymore. My shoulders have grooves, pain in my upper back and neck area, headaches, rashes under my breasts, etc. As I get older, I just can't handle the weight any longer so I asked my doctor if I could do it. I honestly wasn't expecting to be approved this quickly but with all my chiropractor records from 10-12 years ago for my upper back and neck area, maybe that was enough for my insurance to approve me. I am scheduled for November 2nd and am excited to get this weight off my shoulders at last. I have been carrying it around with me for almost 40 years now.

I had a BR on October 8 also at Midsota. Dr yang did my reduction but I had a internal bleed and had to go back in for emergency surgery at the St Cloud hospital that same night. Dr Heath was on call and was awesome! The next morning your surgeon Dr Erickson came to my room and redid my bandages and checked me out and she was very compassionate and nice! Good luck to you!

How are you doing now? I have been reading your review as it goes along. Has the swelling and redness gone down from your last post? It looked very painful from what I could see. Did they tell you to go off all your supplements too? I am wondering why I can't take my fish oil and vitamin D3? I think they would be beneficial before surgery.

How have you been PixieStix? Day 15 was my magical day where I woke up feeling almost like my old self. Hope everything is still going well!

That is exactly how I was - not much for previous Dr appointments but 10+ years of Chiropractic on neck and back. I am 17 days post op and I can tell you it is an immediate relief!! I'm so excited for you, you can't even imagine how much those babies are effecting your neck and back until the weight is lifted. I didn't realize how bad it really was until I woke up after surgery sitting up in my hospital bed and the first thing I Said was "there's no tugging on my neck....I didn't realize before that it did that until now." I've been sleeping and sitting in my recliner since and still.....no back or neck pain. I was standing at my kitchen sink cleaning up some dishes and no back pain!!!! It goes on and on - everyday I am amazed at how wonderful I feel. I got 4lbs removed total and I'm loving it! Good Luck and I'll be following you.

It's so helpful to hear from someone who has gone through this. I was getting messages from a gianna23 who made a few comments which made me think they are not legit. You look really great after surgery. I am hopeful it will do the same for me. What kind of bra are you wearing now? Do you use the Genie Bra or something different?

I am so happy for you. This just brings tears to my eyes. That is what this surgery is all about. I don't look forward to the idea of surgery and it feels strange to be excited about such a thing doesn't it? Congratulations on your new life of relief!

I'm mostly still wearing the compression bra they gave me at the hospital. I bought a few front closing sport bras from Walmart (one was Hanes and I think the other was danskin) both 38 D. I tried putting them on a week after surgery but I was so swollen they didn't fit. Just the other day I decided to try one on again and I wore it all day! It was so cool to wear something that fit from a store!!!! I've been washing my compression bra a lot and that seems to be the most comfortable until swelling on sides go down. That really is the worse part of it all.....that and sitting around so much. I didn't have much for pain and felt great the first 3 days that's when the swelling really kicked in. I have read the genie bra is great and thinking about trying it.

I think they will give me one something like that after surgery to wear home. I will look at Walmart for them. I think it matters how much you have removed on the bruising and swelling. I guess time will tell for me.
October 24, 2015
Do you have someone at home to help you? I stayed one night in hospital which was great and my husband and daughter have been taking care of everything since. It's important to really take time to rest and heal. And stay positive - I didn't experience any sense of loss like some do but my PS told me it was very common for women to cry when the looked down afterwards. I looked down and said "I can see my feet! And my belly is bigger than I thought."

That's a good point. I have my husband but we own a business and he will have to go to work while I am not there. So I have one person to stay with me for a few hours the day after surgery and then I am on my own. Did you need help at home following the second day?
October 26, 2015
Sorry for my late response - I was pretty much home alone after 2nd day but had my husband and daughter taking care of everything in the morning and evening as far as they went. I made sure I had my house spotless, meals frozen, groceries and my recliner all set up before I went in so that I was prepared afterwards. I was up and walking around on my own as far as going to bathroom, getting more water and an occasional snack. I had a small table set up with everything I needed so that I was comfy (water bottle, perscription and remote.)

I was doing really well until yesterday. Seems like I take one step forward and 3 back!! My swelling went down significantly but I'm still swollen more then I'd like to be and now my incision on my right breast is starting to split open a little and ooze. Back to the dr tomorrow. The glue is starting to flake off and the left breast looks great! I'll post a pic today. I'm so glad you're doing so well! I think I overdue it and need to make myself relax more and not lift so much but it's hard with 5 kids at home to just let things go!
October 26, 2015
Oh my - yes that would be very hard to not over due it. I'm finding that test is the key to feeling well.

Wow! You really have your hands full with the kids and surgery too. You take it easy no matter how hard it is.

I have an infection in my right breast and the weirdest thing happened last night! As my incision has been splitting open in spots I've had some dissolvable stitches pop out but last night when I took my bra off to shower I noticed this little white thing coming out of my incision. I touched it and a plastic hook thing popped out!! I was seriously freaked out and brought it to my mother in law to show her and we googled it and it's a dissolvable staple! I've never seen them before and didn't know I even had them in my incision! I'm back on antibiotics and praying things just heal up fast! I see the dr again tomorrow! Thanks for all your replies!
User Avatar

Geez! That would be really hard to handle. I will ask if I am going to have those dissolving staples too. I hope you feel better soon.
October 29, 2015
I wish I could post a pic in this reply but I'll post it on my page so you can see the staple thing. Another one came out today! They're so weird! They start to really irritate my skin and then I can feel a sharp thing and it pops out! I saw the general surgeon from my home town that removed my drain tube yesterday and he had to lance a little part of my incision to drain the infection and I'm on more antibiotics! He said that those staple things were probably used in the second surgery because they had to fully open up everything again and those staples are much stronger than sutures. I supposed after everything they didn't want my boob falling out! Haha! But he did say that aesthetically Dr Yang and Dr Heath did the nicest reduction he's ever seen! He said he's very impressed with how they turned out! So yay MIDSOTA for that! I need to post some recent pics! I still feel swollen and my incisions still have glue on them but hopefully once that's all gone they'll look good! Enjoy your Wkend of preparing and don't be to nervous! It'll go great!!

I just got approval and was referred by my doctor maybe a month and a half ago. I thought it went really fast but now I know it was.
October 22, 2015
Yea that was pretty fast, that's good I'm happy for you, what size are they?

It's kind of embarrassing to talk about and even worse to put pictures on there. but it has been very helpful for me to look at all the reviews and see the pictures. It helped me to decide on whether or not I want to do this surgery. I am now a 36F/G according to the girl in the store who measured me.
October 22, 2015
Yes I understand, you have nothing to be embarrassed though I used to feel the same way, it took me a while to post pics on my other account,( I forgot the password and email so made a new on) but I understand everyone here is going through the same thing, why do you feel embarrassed?
October 22, 2015
Because they are saggy?
October 24, 2015
Not for long!

Thank you for the positive encouragement. I am not sure the comments from some people in here are very supportive. This is a very personal and emotional subject for me as it is for others I am sure. I am now choosing to only respond to supportive people such as you.
October 24, 2015
Well I thought I was being positive, I'm sorry so sorry if you feel otherwise
October 24, 2015
Don't try to make it seem like I was trying to be mean (booter1023) I'll admit I guess it was a little blunt but I wasn't trying to be mean nor rude, so don't do that
October 23, 2015

That's ok. It is hard for me to talk about it but these forums have been so helpful that I wanted to put my review in as well. I am looking forward to feeling better and not having to wear a saddle for the rest of my life. Hopefully a Genie Bra will do for most of the time.

I am getting anxious for my surgery in 4 days. I have been putting my mind to getting things done that I won't be able to do later. Like washing windows, cleaning house, cutting the dogs nails, doing laundry. This weekend I plan on cooking up some food to have in the frig for warm ups this week when I am recovering. Soup is number one on my list, I like soup when I am feeling down and it is so comforting and easy to digest. I moved all of my button up shirts to the lower rack so I can reach them afterwards. My physical is tomorrow. I am cutting off my coffee as of tomorrow. That's three days early but I have heard it makes you sensitive to pain. It did make me really feel it when I got my eyeliner tattooed on. So I am stopping it earlier for this. I plan on doing our steam sauna today to help prep my skin. We are so lucky to have this at work. It softens and makes your skin feel great. Getting sykked!

Had my physical today and it helped me to get excited about upcoming surgery again. Hopefully, everything is set and ready to go when I get there on Monday morning. Not sure what time my surgery will be but looking forward to it!

Good luck on your surgery. Mine was the 27th and I still have my bra from the operating room on, PS said he would remove on Tuesday. I peeked and am a B cup as far as I can tell. I am 52 and was a 34DD. I am 5'7, 136lbs. I hope this helps my back and neck pain. Everyone says it will. I feel like I can stand with my shoulders back now. Will post pics soon. Surgery itself is a piece of cake. No worries!!
