I feel my experience of a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction was made much better with the services from Dr. Wheeler and the staff. My journey began after having my yearly mammogram and subsequent appointments my primary doctors’ office scheduled. More images done- leading to a lumpectomy at my decision. However lab results showed the lumpectomy was not successful, so off to next recommended doctor, Dr. Wheeler. Coordination with the first specialist was made to remove breast; then Dr. Wheeler would perform the next portion of surgery. He would be placing extenders and the intricate closing which would be the longest part of surgery. I would spend a few days in hospital before going home. My daughter took care of meds, drain tubes, bandaging, etc. by staying with me for the first week, I recommend having someone to assist with this for a few days or longer especially if you are not use to drugs to reduce pain. A few weeks later, my husband received a call from the first surgeon; she talked about the failed lumpectomy and then gave him the results from bi-lateral breast tissue. She told him I had made a good decision - cancer was discovered in the other breast. He discussed options and provided literature to help understand the different procedures, and would interject more information until I felt I had the information for a decision - a double mastectomy with silicone implants. With more procedures to come (90 days apart), the first one with liposuction rated as painful as the breast removal – at least for me probably due to being overweight. Each procedure is getting easier and with a faster recovery time. I’ve been pleasantly surprised after each procedure, each one with great results and I feel extremely fortunate to have such a marvelous group of people that assisted me during this time. All that is left is my tattoos. It has taken a year but I plan to make up for all my down time from now on.
