Upper and Lower Jaw Surgery, Need Help Deciding - Southern California

Hi all,

I've had a asymmetric malocclusion that started to develop after I finished braces in High School. This was about a little over a decade ago. I've had brace work again to try to straighten things up but it's just getting worse and worse.

I've seen a local oral surgeon who says he can do this. I'm just not sure if I should do both upper and lower jaw surgery or just lower. Anything I think would help my bite, which is very uncomfortable. I can share the name of the surgeon over PM. The surgeon seems to be just doing what I ask versus recommending, which I can't tell if it's good or bad. On the one hand the surgeon is listening to me but on the otherhand I'm not getting strong recommendations. My scheduled surgery date is in a two weeks time, I haven't paid anything yet, but on the business side they are a bit pushy which somewhat makes me nervous. I'm going through PPO instead of HMO if that's a consideration.

Any guidance would be most appreciated.

Hi. I have the same problem with my jaw but never had braces as not needed them but if you put a picture of my jaw and yours together they're almost identical. I haven't been diagnosed as yet as waiting to see the doctor. I have pain too it's awful and hate the way I look.

Regarding surgery could you not ancestors the lower jaw done first and see how that helps?

Considering this...thanks much chloe

Don't consider this. Remember they are not correcting individual teeth or jaws but rather the relationship between the two jaws. Use a holistic approach - this surgery can't be done in stages. But I'm sure the experts will tell you that anyway.

Get another opinion preferable from a teaching hospital with a maxillofacial surgery dept.
Try to get your appt with the head of the dept.
Ask your physician straight on "what do you recommend with my case? What are my options? What are the pros and cons of the options?

just want to second rodesmj's opinion. go to a good teaching hospital. if you don't find anyone great there we have EXCELLANT people here at university of wa. don't mess around with a guy who is not giving a clear comprehensive plan. i have seen the good the bad and the ugly with this type of surgery. you really need a guy who can not just do surgery, but make a total plan. this is like a house remodel first get the foundation straight and level.

I think this is one of the most invasive procedures I have seen. Don't be in a rush. Take rhodesmj's advice and get a second opinion. From reading on RS it's imperative you get a surgeon who is an expert and knows what he/she is doing. It's worrisome your surgeon didn't present to you a treatment plan based on his expertise.

I had my surgery (double jaw) at the Los Angeles Center for Oral Maxillofacial Surgery with Dr. Relle and Walline. They are REALLY good and know their stuff. Let me know if you want more info.
