On the other side!

I made it to the other side! Sorry that I haven't updated since my operation on Tuesday. Not because anything went wrong but I just wanted to concentrate on my recovery.

The procedure went really well, everybody that looked after me were just amazing and made the experience a very good one. I am over the moon with the results that I can see so far with 2.6 kg removed, so needless to say I feel that the weight of the world has been lifted from my poor back, neck and shoulders.

I did have a little complication - I lost quite a lot of blood during the procedure, which only follows when they remove such a lot of tissue. So my haemoglobin levels took quite a knock. There was talk of a blood transfusion at one stage which scared me, but in the end my consultant decided that this wouldn't be the best route for me, so I am taking iron, have adapted my diet and am taking lots of rest. It just means that I am so very weak and a bit lightheaded. I hardly have the energy to sit and eat meals some days but I will only get stronger over the next few weeks.

The pain is not too bad, I am on paracetamol and diclofenac. I have codeine to hand but would prefer to go without these, and have done so far.

When I am feeling more energetic I will update again properly and post some pictures. I hope all of the other lovely ladies that are now on the other side are healing nicely and good luck to those of you that are about to embark on this exciting journey! x

Last day at work before the big day itself...!

So today is my last day at work. I'm going to feel so relieved by the time I walk out of the door tonight as the last few days have been pretty tiring. I'm not sleeping very well, waking up very early and then finding myself just laying there thinking. I have also lost any focus and have found myself to be very distracted. I'm really looking forward to spending a very rare Bank Holiday with my nearest and dearest. Got a couple of social events to enjoy and also visits to the family.

Yesterday was a funny day. Found myself to be quite tearful at times. I actually paid for the procedure yesterday afternoon, after telling myself and my partner I was going to do it at the beginning of the week. Not sure why I put it off, maybe unconsciously having second thoughts? Anyway, it's done now and so I am all set and actually feel pretty good about that. I also asked to be put through to the pre op nurse to ask a couple of questions that I had been mulling over since my pre op 3 weeks ago. The main question was why I hadn't been given an ECG? Most people I know under going surgery were given one as a matter of course. She said that as my blood pressure was 'like a baby's' and I was fit and healthy I didn't need one, but if I was worried to talk to my nurse and anaesthetist on the morning of my op. The other thing wash wasn't given any body wash or offered MRSA testing. Again, I was told that this wasn't necessary ? I guess I just have to trust they know what they are doing!

So after a bit of a wobbly day yesterday, today I am feeling completely different. I'm feeling quite excited, not as nervous as I have been although I am sure that will change over the next few days. This weekend is just going to fly by, I know.....
