Best Investment of 2019 (WonderSmile Australia)

I've had a mild crowding issue since I was in my early teens, and at two appointments in late 2018, with my dentist and orthodontist, respectively, I was told my teeth were only going to get progressively worse the older I got.

I'd wanted my teeth straightened for a while, but it wasn't until the end of year 12 that I managed to convince my family that, yes, I DID need to straighten my teeth, and yes, it WAS emotionally painful being a new adult with the crooked smile you associate with a pre-teen. Unfortunately, my orthodontist quoted me $8000 AUD for invisible aligners, and I was not financially prepared to go through with her offer.

Fast-forward a couple of months, to the beginning of 2019, I stumble upon a WonderSmile billboard advertising invisible aligners at a fraction of the cost my orthodontist quoted. It felt spookily relevant, and I quickly jotted down the name of the company before I forgot. In the short weeks that followed, I did all the research I could on the company (known as SmileDirectClub outside Australia) to see whether this more affordable alternative was appropriate for my needs. As previously mentioned, as my dentist and orthodontist informed me that my crowding was only mild, and my teeth were in healthy condition, I decided that WonderSmile would safely, discreetly and cheaply correct my problem. So I called them up and booked an appointment at my local SmileShop, as they call it.

The 3D scan of my teeth was fascinating, and the woman who did it was sweet, informative and helpful. We discussed how and for who WonderSmile works, and just as I predicted, WonderSmile decided my mildly crowded teeth were within their capacity to correct.

A month after my initial appointment, my box of aligners arrived, a whole 9 months worth. The first month with them in was somewhat awkward, slight lisp, achy jaws and all. But soon enough my jaws got used to the shifting of my teeth, and each new set of aligners only felt a little tight for fifteen minutes before settling nicely.

At this point, my top arch, which was predicted to take 6 months to correct, is pretty much done, and I'm to have an appointment soon for some final refinements, just to close a few slight gaps. My bottom arch has 3 months left, but it's coming along rather nicely. I've had no problems thus far, and am really pleased with how my teeth have shifted.

I used to be too embarrassed to laugh or smile properly, and within half a year I can say the opposite is true, despite the fact my journey hasn't quite finished yet.

For those with mild crowding issues as well, I would recommend WonderSmile here in Australia. It's much more affordable, and because the aligners are invisible, their isn't the social stigma of regular braces (for adults that is). Just ensure to get regular checkups with your dentist along your journey, to monitor the health of your teeth and your bite. As always, do things safely, and make educated choices. WonderSmile is for cosmetic purposes, and for fixing mild flaws.

Best of luck.
