LASER/VASER Lipo - I decided to stop putting my life on hold and do what makes me happy

ORIGINAL POST

LASER/VASER Lipo

EC1983
$7,600
I'm a 37 year old woman, 2 months away from turning 38. I've always been athletic (19 marathons in the last 8 years) but always had a stomach pooch. I'm 5'3 and my weight tends to hover around 135-140lbs, no kids. Given the pandemic and being less active, I gained about 10 more lbs and all of it went to my stomach. I've always known I wanted a mommy makeover after I have kids but since it's not looking like that's happening anytime soon, I decided to stop putting my life on hold and do what makes me happy.

I began my research in late February 2021. I had several virtual and in-person (COVID safe) free consultations with some well known, board certified surgeons mostly in the Bay Area where I live. I kept a very detailed notebook with questions, my interactions with the doctors, impressions of them, how they answered my questions, etc. I'd initially wanted an abdominal lipo with fat transfer to the breast but after more research and talking to the doctors, I decided it would be a waste of money for me given that I have tuberous breasts and about 50% of the fat does not survive anyway. I plan on implants later in the future. I was turned off from the other surgeons for several reasons - some were too pushy, too expensive, some focused too much on the cosmetic aspect without including the medical implications, some had zero personality and appeared bored, etc. I knew Hoffman was my guy as soon as I met him. While he's the consumate professional, he still has a sense of humor but was also honest with me and didn't try to sell me an unattainable dreams. I just wanna lose the gut and have my natural curves show through. Since I wasn't planning on fat transfer, we decided on LASER/Smart lipo. LASER kills the fat so it's not suitable for transfer but VASER doesn't and I believe is more expensive. Dr. Hoffman did say that he does keep the VASER in the OR and could use it if he comes across a particularly tough area of fat during the surgery. My consultation with him was on 3/17/21 and I decided by 3/19/21 that he's my guy. I paid the $500 fee to reserve my surgery day/time for 11:30am on 4/20/21. I also have to give a lot of credit to Karen and the rest of the staff for being so responsive to all my questions and filling out all the paperwork I needed for my job in order to take time off. I had my pre-op appointment on 4/7/21, 2 weeks before my surgery. I did all the paperwork, went over everything with Hoffman and his staff, took pictures, was given instructions on what not to do before surgery, made my final payment in full, etc. The day before the surgery, a nurse and the anesthesiologist called me to confirm my appointment and go over any last minute details and questions. Due to some scheduling issues, my surgery time was moved up to 12:30pm - no big deal, and was told be at the surgical facility at 11:15am. Since you can't eat or drink after midnight, I ate my last meal around 11:30pm the night before. I'll make another post about surgery day and my 1 week update, stay tuned....

Congrats on taking the leap! I just had mine on 4/28 and already feel SO much better about my physical appearance. Look forward to your progress pics!

Thanks you! Congrats to you too! Hope your recovery is going well. I'll be posting an update soon.

Where did you go? I plan on going to Sonobello here in Tampa
May 9, 2021
I went to Dr. Daryl Hoffman in the San Francisco bay area where I live.

Do you have to go to a lymphatic doctor or can a nurse do it? (My daughter is a nurse)
June 7, 2021
Hi! Lymphatic massage therapists have specialized school/training, a regular doctor or nurse can't do it unless they have the training. But they do work hand in hand with doctors because many breast cancer and lymphedema patients do need the massage.

Thank you so much!

Surgery day, Post-op 2 weeks later

EC1983
Sorry I’m late with my update. I apologize in advance for being so wordy, I try to be detailed as possible.
Surgery day – 4/20/21: Prior to entrance into the surgical facility, I was given a rapid COVID test even though I’m fully vaccinated just for the safety of everyone involved in my procedure. Upon negative results (took about 15 mins), I was ushered in. I was given a pregnancy test, my a$$ would have been sent home if I was pregnant. LOL. A nurse took my vitals, checked my hemoglobin levels, went over family history, and other medical stuff. An IV fluid was started on me to keep me hydrated since I hadn’t had anything to eat or drink since the previous night. The anesthesiologist came in and went over everything with me again. I was to be put under general anesthesia. Given the large area (upper abdomen, lower abdomen, sides/planks) being liposuctioned, it’s recommended that you go with general anesthesia so the doctor can really go in on you without you feeling any discomfort and to avoid them trying to manage your pain at the same time they’re operating on you. And frankly, after reading all the horror stories of people being in pain during their “awake” procedures, I was completely fine with being fully knocked out. Dr. Hoffman then came in and marked me up, and I was then led into the OR. Versed was injected to my IV and I don’t remember anything else after that. I woke up tired and drowsy, with my compression garment already on me. I must say I’m impressed that they were able to strap me into that thing while on the operating table. It took about 30 mins for me to be fully awake and hold my head up. They helped me get dressed and I was wheeled out in a wheelchair to my waiting partner. Side note: Wear loose-fitting clothes like sweats or pajamas and a zip shirt for ease. No jeans or leggings because you don’t want anything rubbing up against your body.
I wasn’t in any pain for the first 2 days, just super sore and uncomfortable because I had to sleep with my head propped up. Thanks to all the other posts on here, I was super prepared with puppy pads and dark towels (which I ended up not using at all because I never leaked through my 3 incisions – 1 in my belly button and 2 on the sides, they were sutured), Bromelain for inflammation, lymphatic drainage supplements, Anica gel and tabs for soreness, and Miralax (which I also didn’t need, I pooped normal on day 2). I also got an extra compression garment and waist trainer from Amazon so I could use when I washed the one they gave me. I got my first LMT on day 2, no pain whatsoever, they just worked on my lymph nodes. From day 3 onward, Lawd have mercy! I was so freaking miserable and swollen like a pregnant cow. I had a few breakdowns because I was convinced I’d wasted my money to look even worse than I did before. Not only was my stomach swollen, so was my face, butt, thighs, back, and pubic area. The pubic area pain was the WORST! It was so swollen and ached that even sitting down or touching it was torture. Had my 2nd LMT on day 6 where they really worked on my abdominal area. It hurt but it wasn’t unbearable. I found that walking helped me feel better. After laying/sitting for a while, I was always in more pain and super sore. I had my 1st post-op apt on day 8. I felt like sh!t but I was assured that all the swelling was perfectly normal. They took pictures, and compared to my pre-op pictures. There was a difference even though I still looked pregnant. LOL. I was given a firming gel to start using on my stomach. 3rd LMT on day 10 – they worked on my pubic area and it felt SOOOOOO much better and less swollen. I had another LMT on day 14 and that also felt good. Even though my swelling is taking forever to go down, I’m physically starting to feel better. Patience is not my strongest virtue so this waiting period is hard for me but I’m hanging in there and trusting the process.
I’ll continue to update you all.

Thanks for the update! Hoping you'll be feeling better and seeing more results soon. I'm going in for mine in a couple days so I'm appreciative for these updates!
May 10, 2021
You're very welcome!! Recovery is going well, I'm almost back to feeling 100%. I'm almost at 3 weeks post-op and I've gotten 5 lymphatic massages so far, I'm also wearing the compression garments religiously. The swelling has gone down significantly in the past few days but I'm not pancake flat yet. Good luck with your upcoming procedure, I pray all goes well. Keep us posted on your progress and I'm happy to answer any questions. Take care!
May 11, 2021
I would love any recommendations you have on compression garments. I have purchased three abdominal binders so far and hope that at least one of them is comfortable. And did you find that the massages were helpful? I had my pre-op this morning so I have my pre-surgery pain and calming meds ready to go! Ironically, I am not nervous at all. I'm ready to get this show on the road! I was supposed to have this surgery in March but had to postpone until my platelet counts and iron levels were at normal levels. Sooooooo excited to have this done finally!!!
May 11, 2021
Good for you! I wasn't nervous either. I don't have any strong garment recommendations per se. I just did a search on Amazon. There are some expensive ones but I just went for the cheaper ones with good reviews. I do recommend getting the ones with the hooks in the crotch for ease using the bathroom. And, yes - I do find the massages helpful, the downside is that they are expensive.

Tomorrow is the big day--12pm (gulp). I'll be sure to reply here to let you know how it goes. I still can't believe I'm down to hours before the procedure. God let me have a smooth and successful procedure! Whew chile.... (deep breath)
May 11, 2021
Woot woot!!! Good luck!! I'm keeping you in my thoughts, everything is gonna go well. I hope you have someone to take care of you for at least the first 24 hours.
May 11, 2021
:) Yes--my husband will be with me. When did you feel like you were able to move around almost like normal (not exercising)...just normal stuff like going to the store etc.
May 12, 2021
Glad to hear! Hope everything went well today. Depends on your definition of normal - for me, I would say I was super sore for 2 weeks but I was still able to move around and do stuff, I just moved slowly. I felt stiff, it was hard to get in/out of the car, bend down, etc. I'm 3 weeks post-op right now and I still feel a little soreness in my abdomen from time to time but nothing major.
May 13, 2021
ALL DONE! The procedure itself was not bad. It was about what I expected. After taking the 2nd Xanax (because I felt like I was waaaay too alert) we listened to Beyoncé, Jay-z and Cardi B throughout. My doctor and the nurse were soooo much fun. We talked and sang the entire time. I was trying to listen to spa music because I wanted to sleep to avoid seeing or hearing anything and they kept asking who my favorite artist was...and there we had it...Beyoncé radio. But giiiiiirl....by 7pm I tried to get out of bed to eat and thought I was going to either pass out or grow up. I quickly laid down and took pain meds and made my husband feed me little bites. Lol. I was out again until 11p where I ate crackers and stayed in bed. Now it's 5am and I'm not in as much pain but I feel sore, leaky and gross. About to muster up the strength to get moving. More to come...
May 14, 2021
Yayyyy!! Glad to hear all went well. Kudos to you for doing it awake! Did you feel any tugging? The first few days are rough for sure. Take it easy but remember to take short easy walks so you don't develop clots. Wishing you a speedy and easy recovery, hang in there!
May 14, 2021
Yes...I felt every poke and prod...but not in a painful way. Felt like I had on a vest and they were working on the vest....weird but that's the only way I can describe it. I'm not going to lie...yesterday was rough. A bit tougher than I'd expected. I was nauseous because of the pain meds but I stopped and switched to Tylenol mid day after becoming violently ill around noon. It was all because I hadn't eaten much the day before and hadn't had much yesterday morning. I started to feel better by the evening after taking a shower and loosening my binder. I was trying to be snatched to the gods (lol) but I think I was doing a bit much because I made it MUCH tighter than when they put it on me before I left. And I will definitely plan to walk more today. Hubby won't help me as much...talking bout...."no pity party...I heard what the doc said...he said you need to walk". (Insert eye roll). Lol
May 14, 2021
And...how are you feeling? Swelling going down yet?
May 15, 2021
Hahaha!! I totally understand. We signed up for this so you better suck it up, buttercup. LOL.

Yeah, loosen up the binder a bit. I had it on too tight too and could barely breathe. They say it doesn't have to be that tight. Oxy is not to be messed up, I took it on an empty stomach and ended up in the bathroom with violent diarrhea and vomiting. Stick with the extra strength Tylenol. Don't worry, just be patient - you'll get through this stage eventually.
May 15, 2021
Yes, swelling is going down. I'll post more pics soon.
May 15, 2021
Lol. Yes, we did sign up for this indeed. Phew! I will say...today was MUCH better. I'm excited for tomorrow. Stitches are almost gone--I'm amazed! Only took one Tylenol today to help with the soreness. And I moved around quite a bit. I can't wait to see your updated pics. I will post some soon too. I want to see my center belly go down a bit more first but pleased with the progress so far. I just have to be patient.
June 16, 2021
Praying for you.
May 11, 2021
You are doing great! Don't worry, you appear to be right on track with your healing. You might be swollen for quite a while, but keep the faith.

May I ask where you got your lymphatic massages? I live on the Peninsula and haven't been able to find some place that offers this.
May 11, 2021
Thank you very much!! I'm hanging in there.

Since you're in the Peninsula, I strongly recommend Maren Collins at Bay Area Lymphatic & Massage in San Mateo. I've been going to her and she's awesome. I started out with with Morgan Smith at Sports Chiropractic & Massage in SF but I prefer Maren.
May 12, 2021
Thank you so much! I will check her out.
May 12, 2021
You're very welcome!
May 14, 2021
would love to see more photos when you are up to it.
May 15, 2021
Approaching my 4 week mark, I'll post updated pics soon!
May 27, 2021
Are you getting lymphatic massage? Trust me, that will take down the swelling
May 27, 2021
Sorry, I see you are doing this. My bad.
May 28, 2021
No worries! Yes, I'm still getting them but it's every other week. Do you think I should get them more often? Honestly, I've not been motivated to take any more pictures because I don't like how I look. My patience is wearing thin.
May 28, 2021
No I think you're getting them the perfect amount of times. But I also think the doctor needs to step up and help you out. He should have some suggests I would think. It's probably fine and will start to de-swell, but I would be worried too
June 7, 2021
Thank you for your kind words. I did see my doctor last week because I was seriously freaking out. He was kind and understanding. According to him and my massage lady, i'm still swollen. We all heal differently and the truth is that I'm also comparing myself to others. I've been told to give it 3 months, approximately 80% of my swelling should be down by then. I just need to work on my patience. I've started marathon training again and I'm feeling good. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Update (2 months post op)

EC1983
My body is so up and down, it's been fluctuating. I find that I'm less swollen when I wake up and super swollen and bloated by the end of the day. I actually started taking a diuretic but I was told not to so I've since stopped. From the front, it doesn't look too bad but the side is like whoaaa! I'm also marathon training right now so while I'm not necessarily gaining fat, I'm gaining more muscle so I don't know if that's affecting me. I've also noticed that my stomach has gotten more itchy and sensitive in the past few days, my massage lady said it means that my nerves are waking back up. She also says that she can feel all the fluid still inside me. I'm now wearing a super tight waist trainer, seems to be helping but I'm not where I wanna be. I'm approaching my 3 month mark and I've been told that I would see 80% of my results by then but I'm honestly scared and worried. I wish I could show you guys a pancake flat stomach but this is my reality.

Wow, you look great! I see the swelling subsiding and can see your ab muscles. BTW, totally envious of your muscular legs! I'm definitely getting lymphatic massages once I have my surgery.
June 25, 2021
That's very kind of you, thank you :)
June 25, 2021
You look great! Bathing suit pic is fire!! But I TOTALLY hear you on the up and down thing. I'm at the 6 week mark now. Went on vacay last week and didn't wear my binder (doc said it was ok) and I thought I was going to pop--the damn swelling was out of control. The heat was the problem. :( I wake up in the mornings and feel skinny and then by the end of the day I'm pudgy again. And with the exception of last week I always wear my binder 23/7. Ugh. So you are not alone. I was also told that I still have a lot of fluid and that it will take more time. "What can I do?!" was my question to the doc...the response "nothing...just time" (insert eye roll) So yeah...I'm with you boo...hang in there. You're not alone.
June 29, 2021
Thank you very much for sharing your experience. Praying for lots of patience and a snatched waist!
June 28, 2021
I looked at your photos a couple of times and after I took a look back at your pre-op I definitely see a change and improvement. You look great hun! Maybe you may be consuming an influx in sodium that is causing bloat but overall you look amazing!
June 29, 2021
I appreciate your feedback! I'm definitely going to watch my salt intake moving forward!
July 20, 2021
GIrl you look better than you realize> We are always critical of ourselves. You look good! I know when i am swollen though it feels awful. Can you take lots of bromelian it really really helps with swelling. ,Its an enzyme from pinneapples not sure if I am spelling it right!
July 21, 2021
Is it normal to be swollen 2 months later? That makes me nlt want to do it. How long did you need to wear the compression? Can you workout?
