Neck Scar Revision - 10 Years After Injury

I'm 29 years old now but when I was 19 years old I was running and took a short cut through my neighbors backyard. That short cut ended with me on my back with blood running down my neck. My friend was behind me so he came running and saw what happened and took me to the hospital. I ran into a makeshift clothesline that was a wire between two trees. I ended up with 10 internal stitches and 20 external stitches. Around a year after the injury I had steroid shots injected because a had a rather large lump where my scar was. The lump disappeared after the steroid shots, which helped a lot but due to the thickness of the scar I feel it is still pretty noticeable. It's been 10 years but I'm finally going to get my scar revised!
I'm excited for the possibility that it will be less noticeable but I'm extremely nervous to go through the pain and the healing process all over again with no guarantee of what it will look like at the end! It's terrify! I did ask my PS about my concerns and he said that he would not have agreed to do the procedure if he did not think that he could make it at least 50% better and I was in good hands. He said I would still have a scar but it would be less noticeable. That made me feel much better but it's still nerve wracking!
I am a full-time nursing student working on my BSN and planning to continue on to become a midwife after that. I am also married with 3 little ones (so far), so I stay plenty busy! I am planning to have my surgery in December during winter break from classes. Any advice or input you all have for me would be great along this journey! I'll keep you posted as I go! =)

Retired after 50+yrs of hospital floor nursing...and still loved it, looked forward every time I went in. I was checking the tile roof work at my home and walking on my very evenly laid stone patio. I was walking sideways (crossing one foot over the other) and looking up. I have one total knee replacement and the other knee is starting to rarely "buckle" but choose that moment to do it..I went face first into the stone patio! I rinsed out the wound as best I could as it was full of dirt, twigs, leaves, you name it. ER MD was not a plastic surgeon but took tons of time to clean and then sew the scar together..also used glue on some areas BUT I was missing a piece of skin in the "center" of the Y shaped scar. He said to not do a thing to it for 1 year. Put me on antibiotic capsules as the wound was so dirty and had me use antibiotic oint for about 2 wks but after that he said Vaseline was fine,,,just keep it lubricated. I posted here about care after the initial wound and sutures,,,responses were to not only lubricate(forget for how long) but a good sunscreen and reapply every single day. I have a facial moisturizer that has a 30 rating in it,,but for the scar area I got a hypoallergenic one rated 50. A year later scar was basically gone. I'm red haired with very fair skin and freckles (they hide a multitude of sins!) I had an "eye lift" at 28 due to lids rotating inward and scratching eyeball. At 76 they were doing it again plus 65% vision loss from hanging over eyes. Had another upper eye lift and plastic reconstructive MD asked who had revised my forehead scar! Told him the story and he said the ER MD did an excellent job. At first I had considered a revision after a yr but at this point not going to bother with it as it turned is 3 very fine white lines and doesn't bother me..BUT I asked him to ck out a lump on my forehead..to me it felt like a little rock. Other MDs, including dermatologist said it was skin growth as it was a good distance from the scar. This plastic surgeon said he would take it out...IT WAS A SMALL ROCK !!! Apparently was hiding when ER staff used about 5 qts of saline to flush that filthy wound and then started to move around. The plastic surgeon's closure of that wound is absolutely invisible !!! So I feel that if he had done the "fall on my face" scar you probably couldn't see it at all...I think you will be very pleased with a plastic surgeon revision of your scar. Follow all instructions carefully (we nurses tend to not do that!) and most importantly lubricate and then sunscreen every day! Oh and try to avoid putting tension on the area,....I posted pic of original ER wound care under 13Alexie74 if you want to ck out original suturing..too bad can't post pic here to show you about 2yrs later result..You cannot even see the scar that the plastic surgeon did a year later to get the rock out! Good luck..

Wow!! Thank you for sharing your story and for the words of encouragement! It does make me feel better about getting the revision done. I don't like the idea of going through pain there again but I'd love it to be a thin white line or anything less visible! I have never been good at sunscreen and have used some tanning beds once and awhile so I'll have to be better about that this time around. Thank you again for all the advice! I will check out your review!

Wow, I'm sorry that you had to experience that. I think you look perfect but it's all about what we want. Best of luck with your journey. Not sure if you tried lasers but they do help improve textures and color.

Thank you for your comment and compliment! I am actually going in for another procedure so I figured while they are cutting they might as well cut this out and revise it as well. My PS thought he could make it at least 50% better if not more. I know it isn't too bad at this point and it has come a long ways, so it makes me nervous to essentially start over with an open cut again but I'd love if it could be even less noticeable. I have a lot of nerves about it but I also trust my PS and think he would not do it if he did not think he could improve it! I appreciate your input though! Thank you again!

Maybe I’m strange but I think some scars are cool. They show we’ve lived! And I don’t think they’re ugly at all! The way you got your scar must’ve been traumatizing indeed but it healed well and you have a lovely neck! Whatever your result, if it’s perfect: great but even if it’s not ‘perfect’ (plastic surgery isn’t a perfect science), you’ll always have that story and you already look really beautiful. :) I wish you the greatest success with your surgery!

Hi Jessie! Thank you! I actually had my surgery November 22nd so there have been updated posts below! I know I will never not have a scar there... I'm hoping that it is at least better than before but I know it won't be gone. I was going in for another procedure so I decided to get this done too. I know it is a part of me and I'm okay with that. After 10 years (almost 11 years) I'm fairly used to it but scars from the shoulders up are just a pain. You can never "escape" them by covering them up with clothes. I would go so long without even noticing it was there then someone would ask me about it and it just made me feel self-conscious. It was something I have always wanted to do to see how it could improve, so I went for it. I hope I get some good results in the end, but yes, it will always be a part of me because I know nothing can make it disappear!

16 days until my scar revision! I am nervous as heck! For almost 11 years now I have wanted to get it revised and for things to be less noticeable but it definitely makes me nervous to go through the healing process again. My PS feels positive he can improve it so I need to focus on that but it's still nerve wracking!

I have been told I will be going under twilight/conscious sedation using Versed, Ketamine and Demerol. I'm a little confused after looking at the effects and side effects of the medication at how I am going to remain still enough for them to cut into my neck but they assured me it will be fine so I need to just have a little faith! Haha!

I will update as things get closer! Thank you for following my journey!

**I'm actually a week post op now but I wanted to post my updates separately from each other so it will flow better**

The surgery went very well! He took a "T" approach to revising the scar as you can tell. This photo is just after the bandage was removed. I had to have it covered for 24 hours and then I could remove the bandage. He is having me put Neosporin on it 2xs per day but otherwise no big instructions except to just take it easy and not put too much tension on the incisions. I was given Norco for pain but only took it a couple days then switched to Tylenol. I think I would have hardly needed the Norco if I did not have another procedure done at the same time as this scar revision. The other procedure was causing me more pain than this for sure.
