Septoplasty - a bump still remains on the nose
ORIGINAL POST
Horrible Experience, Very Painful, Little Care
My experience with Dr. Sands and Mount Sinai has been horrendous to say the least. In August
of 2019, I first went to him for a rhinoplasty to straighten my nose, fix a collapsed nostril and
deviated septum. After the initial procedure was completed, the shortcomings his work
become quite evident. While the nose was still very crooked, even more alarming was a large
bump on the side of my nose. In an attempt to correct his work, he then completed numerous
invasive and painful procedures under only local anesthesia. These procedures included shaving
down the inside of my nose, as well as removing cartilage from my ear and placing it back into
the nose. These procedures were beyond painful. Over a year later after allowing plenty of
time to heal, it was evident that my nose was still very crooked. He agreed and agreed to do a
revision procedure at no cost to me. This procedure continuously got delayed due
to COVID-19 and a shortage of necessary materials per Dr. Sands leaving me with a result I was
extremely unhappy with for additional years. Dr. Sands and his office frequently ignored my
emails and pushed back the procedure at a whim a few times. My mother and I visited his office
a few weeks before the second procedure scheduled for the end of October in 2022 at which
point he made it clear once again that the cost of this procedure would be borne by him. Less
than a month later I was sent a bill from Mt. Sinai for approx. $4,200 for the procedure. Upon
receipt I immediately called his assistant who was unable to provide any resolution. She had a
billing specialist call me and attempt to bully me into paying the bill. I then emailed Dr. Sands
which went ignored until my next in office visit. Upon discussing the bill, his tone dramatically
changed and he tried to backtrack from his initial assurances that there would be no cost. While
removing stitches from my nose he decided to broach the subject and his excuse was "It's sort
of like when you go to the mechanic and things add up to more than you thought." He then
tried to compare it to a recent experience he had purchasing fancy artwork that led him to pay
unexpected moving costs. The most alarming part was him saying with a few years of
experience under his belt now he probably would have went about the initial procedure
differently. Fast forward to today, Dr Sands has chosen to ignore my emails about the bill and
I’ve been forced to see another specialist outside of Mount Sinai to finish the job as a bump still
remains on the nose. Unfortunately this experience has been years of hell.
