I’m 26 years old and have an open bite. I’ve finally decided to go through with correcting this as I have chronic headaches/difficulty chewing/breathing due to the position of my jaws as well as a narrow upper palate.
I’ve had consults with several surgeons and have decided to go with Dr. Bobek in Seattle.
I’m about 3 months into braces and hoping
to have the surgery in April, however, I’m having quite a hard time contacting the insurance coordinator. I’ve been trying for a month and still don’t know if they’ve gotten a reply from my health insurance. Starting to get pretty frustrated. We have money saved for the surgery, however, if it’s possible to get it covered, that would be pretty great.
Braces haven’t been too bad... minus the clear ligatures and my love for curry ????
I’d love to hear some positive stories from other people who have had jaw surgery! It’s a life-changing, huge ordeal. I am super nervous, but just trying to stay positive about it all.

Hey! I just had surgery with Dr. Bobek back in September. I had my follow-up appointment with him just recently and so far so good. He's the best and most affordable jaw surgeon in my opinion out there. If youre having issues getting approval through your insurance company talk with Shannon who is Dr. Bobeks insurance coordinator. You could also just pay a partial fee upfront which will get refunded to you later if your insurance approves it. Thats what I ended up doing. Anyways if you have any questions for me dont hesitate to ask.

Hi! I’m glad it’s going well for you! We just ended up paying for it since insurance denied twice. They do make it really affordable with the packaged deal. My surgery is in 4 days and I’m pretty nervous though! Glad to hear you like Bobek. I live in Portland and at first looked into a surgeon here who did not compare to Dr. Bobek at all

Im in Portland as well! I drove to Seattle for the surgery. Spent the night and had a friend pick me up the next day. The first week is the hardest after that it gets easier. Just drink plenty of fluids and youll be fine.

I have a narrow upper palate, which my neuromuscular dentist just told me is the reason for my chronic TMJ. Cosmetically, I've always had crowded teeth, even despite getting braces as a teenager (only fixed the problem temporarily). I am considering the braces and jaw surgery route so I'm checking out others who have experience here! Good luck! I'd love to know if your chewing pain improves as a result.

I'm 54yrs old and had been dealing with needing jaw surgery since 16yrs of age. Even though my jaw didn't develop correctly into my sockets, and I had an open bite with tongue thrust, the insurance co. considered it cosmetic back then. I did the braces preparing for surgery and then got diagnosed with stage 4 adrenal crisis. My surgeon said because of adrenal diagnosis, I couldn't safely have surgery and heal. 10yrs later my pharmacy gave me the wrong dosage of medication for 3mos and one of the side effects was, my teeth literally falling out. I went to Dr Golpa in Las Vegas for full mouth of teeth held in by 8 implant post. His method is different than all other 4 on 4 implants. It has a steal bar for more support in each one of the arches and the implants are put in more diagonally. The surgeon was able to fit my teeth & bite together perfectly. I no longer have the pain and daily headaches that I used too. All the years of prep work I'd been through only to lose all my teeth unexpectedly to have it work out in the end. Other professionals wanted to do all the other costly measure to know exactly where the teeth should be. I was looking at $100,000. It cost $31,500 at Dr Golpa's. Mexico has their " American dental city" where reg 4 on 4's are done, just not in one day. Their cost is $14,500 for both uppers and lows. I hope this additional info helps you.

4 days before surgery!

Pretty nervous, to be honest. I’ve had surgery before (for broken bones and such), but never one that is so long. My bite has closed quite a bit with braces and my chronic headaches have improved, which makes me think I’m on the right track to feel good again. Will post after the surgery!

1 day post up!

Just got out of the hospital this morning. The worst of it was yesterday evening after the surgery before they pumped me full of pain meds. They worked on expanding my upper jaw, my lower jaw, they extracted a tooth and did something to my chin as well. The surgery took close to four hours. Right now I don’t feel too bad... I slept most of the day. Maybe I’m not to the worst part of recovery yet, but it’s not as horrible as I thought it would be! My face is noticeably shorter than it was before which will take some getting used to.

Is your jaw wired shut. Are you on a liquid diet ?
June 17, 2018
No, it was rubberbanded but only for the night after surgery. Then I had a few elastics on the sides, but it wasn’t closed shut. Yep, I’m on week 6 on the liquid diet.

Had mine yesterday with the same doctor and doing pretty good. Last night was the worst but I felt better this morning. I’m happy to be home and in my own clothing. Hope you are healing well!
June 17, 2018
Good luck!! Hope all goes well. The first week really sucked. But you forget about it quickly.
June 17, 2018
Yes so far nothing has been fun. But I know there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Mostly just sick to my stomach but it’s getting better.
June 17, 2018
Yeah, I felt nauseas for a while. Drinking water and broth/taking the anti nausea meds helped a ton.
June 18, 2018
Did you get your splint out yet? Or did u have one? Also what day did u feel like it was getting better vs getting worse?
June 19, 2018
I think the nausea lasted about a week. I remember getting more zofran at my one week post op and taking it for a few more days. I just got my splint out today! Was supposed to get it out at 3 weeks, but I opted to keep it in longer because I’m super paranoid of relapse. Probably wasn’t necessary, but oh well.
June 19, 2018
Oh I bet it feels amazing having it out! Can’t wait till mine comes out.
