Poor outcome leads to 2nd breast reduction 1 year later

Breast Reduction #2

$9,000
Very glad I went through with a second surgery, with a DIFFERENT surgeon, because i was fortunate to have a good outcome. However, I probably would have regretted my decision if my nipples had fallen off or I developed complications like necrosis.
Here are the positives of this second surgery:
- partial insurance coverage (I still had to pay $5,000 out of pocket but better than no coverage at all)
- reduced size
- lifted breasts
- perfect smaller nipples
- areola remnants in both breasts' vertical scars were removed
- everyone thinks i lost 10 pounds (I practically did)
- i finally fit in to cute tops, can go braless (rarely do because i want to protect my investment)
- i can do jumping jacks, run, live an active life
- no more under boob rashes
- no more dented shoulders from bra straps
- much better post care instruction- tips below:
* this surgeon used glue to close incisions- so no tape allergies to deal with
* dramatically reduced swelling- ace bandage wearing recommending for weeks post-op. I wrapped up 24/7 for at least 3 months. I don't know why this post care tip is not more widely utilized. In fact, I took it upon myself to wear the ace bandage off and on for 9 months. wore it to bed, walking on the treadmill. With my first surgery, the swelling of my still large breasts definitely caused: wide scarring, stretched wider nipples, stretched skin and inevitable sag.
* scar massage with aloe for a FULL year, twice a day, plus topical scar gel
* did not lift anything over 5 pounds for 6 months. Did not raise arms above head and kept elbows close to sides for 4 months. Did not exercise at all for 6 months.
This 2nd surgeon had a much better post-surgery care plan. Seems like a hassle to be that diligent but it was well worth the much better outcome compared to the first reduction surgery.
I was paranoid about developing hematomas, splitting incisions, necrosis, etc., so I was ultra ultra careful. It seems that many breast reduction patients develop major complications when they are not taking it easy. I read about women jumping right back in to exercising and other physical stuff and then they go on to develop split incisions, hematomas, etc.
The recovery from both my surgeries was NOT easy. It hurt a LOT. I needed a few days of RX pain pills, i was grumpy. My advice to anyone thinking of getting this surgery is to wearing ace bandage wrap for 3 months (you can take breaks to breath) to prevent swelling (so you don't end up with stretched out saggy skin), scar massage, and zero physical exertion for 6 months. Not worth the risk to develop complications or poor results! Protect your investment $$

Omg, I am so sorry you had to go through thus twice...I hope your recovery is great this time.
I am looking for a surgeon trusted to make a revision. How you found yours? I am West coast and had my first surgery in OR.
6 month post my first reduction - very disappointed, asymmetrical and in pain. Already got necrosis though...
.
another question, what are distanced now? first was 27 to 24, what distance is now? it looks great!
My was 27 as well, now is 22 for one, and 23.5 for another breast. I am also relatively athletic/petite 5'2", that's why I am asking.
I did a lot of research to find 2nd surgeon- which is the same thing I did for the first surgeon. my notch to nipple is now 19in which is great for my size. I could have gone to 18in and been fine. if you get a second breast reduction you will need to wait a full year. I am not sure if I would do a second surgery if I experienced necrosis. I was scared to death about having a second surgery and did not go in to it lightly. very worried about necrosis and nipples falling off. your risk of complications is much higher with a second surgery, and especially if you use a different surgeon. I need to see if you posted a review about your reduction. lots for you to consider.
Thank you for info! I did posted my review, since day one, and now it is 6 month post.
I don't think I want to use same surgeon, it was very-very unsettling experience. Surgery and post surgery as well. He lied to me. I wouldn't trust him again. Not a person I would let to approach me with a knife while I am unconscious. Been there...
I did look at your review- and IMO your results are decent. My guess is that most would be happy with our outcome. I don’t say that to minimize your feelings about your outcome. It’s our body and you deserve to feel good about it. I can certainly relate to the disappointment. I think my first surgery results were worse than yours- especially because mine were still so huge and I still fit all my old bras. I also think that ridiculously high “patient satisfaction” rate that everyone talks about with Breast Reductions is a bunch of BS. I think a huge amount of women are highly unsatisfied. it is a difficult surgery with massive scarring and high risk of poor outcome. I have talked friends out of having it done. too much can go wrong. Real Self posts are showing horror stories on a daily basis.

10 months post surgery - reflection on why i ended up with poor results

I had provided my 1st surgeon with a handful of "dream results" photos- which involved women who started out with breasts that looked like mine- pseutopetosis (my nipples did not point down), and gave her the before and after results that i was aiming for. So I feel my expectations were somewhat realistic. I wanted to be a size "C" cup.
I did all my homework- asked all the right questions- actually brought in a list to clearly discuss sternum notch to nipple goal (I am only 5'2"), plus reduced nipple size, etc. I bought expensive surgical bras, the pillow wedge, etc. I was a very compliant patient. Post care instructions were to ONLY use paper tape- I developed a sensitivity to the tape and the doctors office said i should stop using at 5 weeks. No scar management alternatives offered.
So to end up with poor outcome was extremely disappointing. At my 6 week visit- i was already discussing with the surgeon that i would be needing a revision. She agreed! She said i would need to wait one year. 9 months post op I called to make the surgery appointment. Went back to see the surgeon and now she is singing a different tune. Apparently she was going to charge me the FULL cost to have the revision. Another $9,000.
Of course I did not return to this surgeon. I was sick to my stomach over the whole ordeal. Losing trust in your doctor really sucks. Not at all comfortable or happy with her if she was not willing to provide any kind of discount.
I don't want to do a formal review. I am not a doctor basher. I am sure she does good work with other procedures. I was just one of the unlucky ones.
