Septal Perforation Repair

I am beyond thankful that I chose Dr Mehta to repair my perforated septum. Prior to my surgery with him I had been under a huge amount of stress for a year and a half after developing the perforation. At first my perforation was something like .7 cm in diamater and it was whistling every time I took a breath through my nose. I was very embarrassed by this and covered it up by breathing through my mouth all the time. Close to 6 months after I started having symptoms from the perforation I had surgery in Iowa where I live to close the perforation. The doctor who did the surgery used tissue from elsewhere in my nose to close the hole. He did not use any available technology. He did not use a pds plate or even a nasal splint. Instead he put packing in my nose after the surgery. This made it so i could not breathe through my nose at all and i had a bunch of bloody packing im my nose. After 1 week I was so irritated and frustrated with the bloody packing still in my nose that i tried to blow through my nose a little bit to try and get it out and it blew the whole repair out. When it came out it was completely black indicating that it had never started getting blood flow in the first place. Now the hole was twice the size at about 1.4 cm. So now instead of just whistling I had also developed a post nasal drip. I started searching for the best doctor I could find to try and help me. I was told that the hole could get bigger over time and eventually my nose could basically collapse and I was terrified by this. I talked to many doctors and ended up being very comfortable with Dr. Mehta after speaking with him as he seemed very honest and caring. I chose him to do the second surgery because of his use of the PDS plate and the doyle splints. Not to mention the fact that he has a 100% success rate in closing holes the size of mine. I also liked the fact that he was going to use a part of my fascia temporalis instead of taking more tissue from inside my nose. After the first surgery failed I was almost convinced that this one was going to fail to and that my life was going to be ruined when the hole ended up even bigger but I had to take a chance and go through with it. Before the surgery Dr. Mehta told me that I had an 80% chance of successful closure which was very scary but he was just being honest. Following the surgery he told me that everything went very well and that I now had a 90% chance of total closure. 1 week after the surgery when I met with Dr. Mehta again i was shocked when he told me that my septum was 100% pink on the left side and 90% pink on the right with 10% of it being purple. In contrast after the first surgery it was black and it blew out after a week. Dr. Mehta told me I now had a 98% chance of total closure with a 2% chance that I could still get an infection. I can not tell you the huge amount of relief I felt that same day as I was getting on the plane to come home. 2 weeks after the surgery I went to an ENT in Iowa to have the doyle splints removed. The doctor who removed them told me that It was now 100% pink on the left side as well. It has now been 5 weeks since the surgery and it feels so great to know that this stressful part of my life is really over. I am completely satisfied with how everything went. I have a shaved head and the fascia temporalis harvest left a small scar on the side of my head but Dr. Mehta did a great job of closing that to and not one person has even noticed it. Even if it is noticeable it is completely worth it. I can not thank Dr. Mehta enough for being the amazing plastic surgeon that he is and fixing this problem for me.
