I had metal braces when I was in junior high...
I had metal braces when I was in junior high school and, like many, did not wear my retainers for longer than a year. (I stopped wearing the removable top retainer and the bottom permanent wire retainer was never replaced after I broke it.)
I have an open bite—not severe but worse than moderate—that has gotten worse over the years, compounded by the fact that I am a tongue thruster. I was not a candidate for Invisalign due to the open bite, and at my age and customer-facing job profession, decided to go with Incognito lingual braces on my both top and bottom arches.
I was nervous about the lisping and postponed my first fitting (top arch) for 2 months due to work travel. I decided to do it mid-December so that I'd have winter break to get used to the top brackets. However, I'd forgotten that I had my company's annual conference 4 days after my appointment. The fitting itself was fine, no discomfort, and I never had any actual tooth pain the first day. The brackets were annoying, I had a mild lisp, and I couldn't eat anything, mostly because I was totally grossed out by the metal taste and idea of food stuck in the brackets.
The second day was a nightmare though—I woke up with cuts all over my tongue (I had not bothered with any wax the first night), and my lisp was extremely pronounced. This was made worse because of the swollen, painful tongue, and talking was simply exhausting. I was able to eat a bit more, however, but the first 3 days I basically drank protein shakes instead of bothering with solid food.
TIPS:
- Get your hands on Gishy Goo dental wax and hoard it! (either from your ortho or supplementing through Amazon; it is a godsend)
- Get a water pik for flossing! (especially if you use any type of wax, which can break apart and hide in your brackets)
The extreme discomfort lasted about 1 week, and after that my lisp started to soften, and I mostly went about my life without thinking about the braces. I just had my bottom brackets applied today (1/10/18), however, and the irritation has started all over again. There is so little room in my mouth for my tongue with both the top and bottom arches done, and my tongue is sore again adjusting to the bottom set. I wish I had explored the option of doing the traditional external braces on bottom and just doing the Incognitos on top, ahh well. (Note the bottom set are also somewhat visible when speaking for me, which sort of defeats the purpose.) I would recommend looking into that for anyone opting for both top and bottom Incognito brackets.
Waiting for the next few days to pass and get used to this new set. My treatment is currently set for a 1.5 years, with wisdom tooth extraction and rubber bands/tooth button coming later down the line.
