My issue was an elongated philtrum (the area between the upper lip and the nostrils) that, with aging, tends to elongate vertically and also causes the upper lip to lengthen horizontally. In addition, I had a very noticeable horizontal line (deep wrinkle) just under the nostrils that indented more when I smiled. I've worked with Dr Elyassnia (Marten Clinic of Plastic Surgery, San Francisco) for four years where he has done exceptional work with Juvaderm and Botox for me (following cosmetic facial surgery). The procedure was under an hour, outpatient, local anesthesia (I drove myself home). The lip lift was very successful, shortened the philtrum issue, with the procedure also "shortening" the horizontal lip length to provide for fuller, more youthful, but completely natural-looking, lips. And eliminating the deep wrinkle. I really love the results, am extremely pleased, and highly recommend both the procedure and Dr. Elyassnia. (Sorry, my pics are just amateur, done with my iPhone, but see the difference just two weeks post-procedure!))

Great result! How long before you felt "ready for prime time". Did the recovery go smoothly?

Very little down time/recovery as the procedure was done under local. Nothing needed but a Tylenol about 5 hours post procedure as the local wore off around the stitches. A little swelling evident first few days, and stitches dissolved in 5 days. At that point, applied make up and went on my way. Even at a week after, very little evidence that any procedure had occurred. As you can see from 2 weeks post procedure picture, everything looked beautiful and continues to be a great result!

Also, should add that I am a 69 year old woman, and with the botox/juvaderm treatments over the past few years, plus this lift lip, Dr Elyassnia has taken great care of me, as hopefully you can detect from the photo!

Where did the dr remove skin? I can't see a scar at all!! Very nice.
September 3, 2016
You don't see a scar because he is a very skilled surgeon! The skin removed was just about above where you see the deep line in the "before" picture. Then, he lifted the remaining skin up to just under the nostrils and stitched. That is what allowed the philtrum to be shortened and the upper lip horizontal length shortened a bit, providing a more youthful, but still natural look. Naturally, at only 2+ weeks out, there is a hairline scar immediately under the nostrils but this will fade in a few more weeks. Hope this helps.

I'm considering a lip lift to remove the horizontal line under my nose that appears when I smile. It usually only shows when I smile BIG. Do you find that the lip lift removed the fold altogether or just somewhat? Looks great so far!

Hi Jessica -- really depends where your line is located in relation to the upper lip and nostril. My surgeon was able to lift my lip enough so that the line disappeared. Considering my age, however, a light line might reappear over time, just a bi-product of aging skin. A successful lip lift will, of course, stretch the skin and, in my case, along with the trimming out of the line, create beautiful results. You would really need to consult with your surgeon on what your own individual expectations should be. If you are living in the SF Bay Area, I strongly endorse Dr Dino Elyassnia!

You look great! Do you mind if I ask if you use any fillers on your lips?
September 19, 2016
Hi jmaryh -- no, have never had lip fillers (but did genetically receive my mom's nice lips, grateful for that!). I do see Dr Elyassnia 3 times a year for botox and filler (if needed) in other areas of the face, but over the past year, the need for filler has really diminished as the Juvaderm lasts a long time, and Dr E know just how to sculpt it!

Hi jmaryh, no have never had fillers in my lips (did, however, receive good genetic lip material from my mom who had beautiful lips, so grateful!). I have seen Dr Elyassnia for the past four years for botox three times a year and for filler, if needed in a few facial areas. The Juvaderm product is long-lasting, and Dr E is a great sculptor (!), so the need for filler has reduced a lot over time.

That's awesome the juvederm is lasting longer and longer. I found that to be true with my lips, but after 5 years since my last "filler up" I'm ready. Boy, it's all in the artistry of the injector, isn't it? Your beautiful results are an impressive calling card for your surgeon!

Beautiful lips. What was the mm length of your upper lip prior to the LL and how many mm did he excise?
September 21, 2016
Not sure of upper lip length prior, but the space between the upper lip and the philtrum was reduced by about 6mm.

You look terrific. Have you had fillers in your lips since the lip lift?
September 20, 2016
No filler before or after. Have not had filler in my lips ever as I am, luckily, blessed with pleasantly full enough lips!

Thanks. Appreciate your response. My PS says that a lip lift does not cause lips to be fuller yours (already luscious) look a bit larger as do
the lips of many other women on this site.

Not true. I need to upload a new browser so I can post photos it made mine fuller and shaped so pretty. I am going in Wed 28th for last revision. Hope to post photos soon. Not saying ALL will get the fullness, but I did----

Thanks. I thoght he was wrong as so many of the women have said they did have filler ut their lips were fuller after the LL. I may need to find a new PS.

Let me redo without all the typos I did think he was wrong as so many of the women have said they did not have filler in their lips even though their lips were fuller. Thanks.

Did the lift create a "roll back" of lip surface making the lip look fuller in addition to simply raising it's position relative to the nasal base? Probably not phrasing this too well (and certainly not technically :( ~ can't tell too much about the lip, at rest, from pics so hope there will be more close up photos. They do look good though!

Hi grace60, shortening the space between the philtrum and the upper lip (which "shortens" the length of the upper lip a bit) did allow for the lip to express more fully. And yet, the upper lip still looks in good balance to the lower lip since I don't have thin lips to begin with. Hope this helps :)
Beautiful!!
