I have Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue. Working out and keeping the weight off was extremely difficult. My mother had a lap band and had some success but I didn't like the idea of being able to open and close the band so you can eat more or less. I also didn't want this foreign object in my body.

When I moved to a new city I decided there was no better place or time to get gastric surgery. I saw a surgeon and discussed my options. He thought I was an excellent candidate and the surgery came with unlimited follow up appointments and access to a nutritionist. He also explained that when they remove your stomach they remove a portion that creates the hormone, ghrelin. Ghrelin is known as the hunger hormone and is partly responsible for your body craving food. Sold.

The surgery was easy. I stayed one night at the hospital and was up and walking around the same day. The diet starts with clear liquids, then protein shakes, soft foods then solid food. You can eat only about 3 ounces at a time. You can, over time, stretch your stomach to accept more than that but to get back to it's original size seems impossible to me.

I don't ever feel restricted by my diet. I order full meals but only eat the protein. My doctor and nutritionist have advised protein first. If you have room then you can eat a vegetable. Protein protein protein. You have to eat protein to maintain your energy. I take a good number of nutritional supplements to make up for not having many in my diet. I have never been to a restaurant that I couldn't order from. I will order a salad and eat just the chicken. I usually order from the appetizer or side orders section and avoid the entrees.

You eat frequently and DO NOT eat and drink at the same time. It is not fun. Your body does something called Dumping and it is unpleasant. Wait thirty minutes between eating and drinking.

I always keep a protein bar with me so I know I have something to eat if I'm going to be out for a few hours. My husband is on food and water duty to make sure I eat and drink regularly and am prepared for the frequency if we are out whether it be the mall or hiking.

You can't drink carbonated beverages. The bubbles expand in your stomach and your tiny new tummy doesn't have the ability to expand like the old tummy. If you do have carbonation it will make you belch like you've never belched before.

You can over eat but you will learn quickly not to. It is extremely painful. Think of how it feels to gorge on Thanksgiving dinner with two servings then stuffing a piece of pie. It hurts. A lot. So you become super aware of your limits.

I now do a bootcamp three times a week, walk all over the city and hike with a lot more ease, a great deal less pain and a lot less shame.

Awesome! How much weight did you loose?

Hi Sexyelee, I have lost around 90 pounds. I go up and down 3 pounds but I don't worry about the number too much anymore. I concentrate on building muscle and getting toned.

Hi Foy, I to have Fibro. and Chronic Fatigue. I had the sleeve done 7 months ago and it was the best thing I ever did. Was 5'9" and 304. Now right at 230. I want to loose around 40 more but its going very slow but I will take what I can get.

Excellent work! It can be frustrating at this point that the weight isn't coming off as quickly. Keep making smart decisions about food and exercise. You can do it!

Congrats on your weight loss mom 1976. I asked two questions above, if you have time to answer too, I would love to hear your experience! Thank you so much!

Hi smoogott3, I have had Fibro.Chronic Fatigue, and low thyroid for almost 20 years now. So in a way I was use to feeling bad and tired, if you know what I mean. My pain since surgery is alot better probally since I am not carrying around so much weight. I don't take much for pain because not much helps and most meds make me sick, that it's not worth it. I believe I am much better then I was. I still get tired once in awhile, but nothing like it was. I have two special needs gentlemen that live with me so I need to be in the best possible shape I can be in. To me the sleeve was a God's sent!! I really don't know how much longer I could have went on like I was. You will not be sorry, it is a total change of life, but one you won't be sorry for. No you can't eat all or what you want, but isn't that the purpose of getting the surgery. I feel 20 years younger and I hope will live alot longer too.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply!

Thank you for sharing your experience! I also have been CF and Fibro. I was wondering if you have seen any improvements in pain, fatigue, etc. since the surgery? I am looking to do the sleeve as well. Thanks again!

Also, we're you on any medications and able to reduce or stop taking some due to the benefits of having the surgery?

The Fibro symptoms have reduced significantly. I still take my prescriptions to manage symptoms but I am able to exercise, be mobile and live an active lifestyle far better than when I had all the extra weight. The fatigue is still a challenge but manageable.

What about excess skin ?
August 12, 2015
I have some saggy bits that I would like to have tucked but I would say that it would be mostly vanity to have it done. This all depends, of course, on factors like age, speed at which the weight was lost, how much you started at, etc.
August 12, 2015
Vanity is good enough of a reason to do it. I know I did it
August 12, 2015
Yep, if you can afford it, absolutely! I mean to say that I am not hindered by the sagginess.
