For several years, I've struggled with my vision...

For several years, I've struggled with my vision because my eyelids have became more and more droopy as I began to age. I am a second generation Chinese and I am 50 years old. I am also mother of 2 girls, a special education teacher, a graduate student at UCSD working on my doctorate in education, and I am an avid volleyball player both on the sand and indoor. Often times, I need to stay up late to study or to do research on my lesson plans for my students. I would find myself looking at the computer having difficulty seeing information on the screen or in my books with clarity. I had my reading glasses on too. I would also get tension headaches and felt the best way to ease the stress was by lift my eyelids up. I began to think of a host of ideas to pull my eyelids back up such as tape my eyelids up, use toothpicks, or pay my children to hold my eyelids up so I could see better. Well, these ideas were just silly attempts to help, but nothing that would be long lasting. I was feeling frustrated with my situation because I was born with different eyelids that later in age impacted my vision. In fact, when I would take photos with my friends or family they would say, "open your eyes", but sadly they were open. I began to feel insecure with my vision problems and how my eyelids were impacting even my day to day life events. Finally, In May, during a routine physical exam, I spoke to my general practitioner, Dr. Jessica Chen (who is also wonderful) about my vision problems, and she gave me a referral to see a specialist at the Shiley Eye Clinic. I met Dr. Korn and he was very understanding of my problem. He said that I needed Asian Eyelid surgery to correct the problem and that this could be covered under insurance due to the problems I was having. This past August, 2014, I had my surgery and the whole procedure was seamless, and I have nothing but positive comments to say about Dr. Korn and his staff. The surgery was quick and the recovery time was also relatively fast. There was some minor pain the first 2 days, but nothing that a little Tylenol could not alleviate. Dr. Korn is down to earth, very thorough with his work, and what I really like about him is that he been supportive from the day I walked into his office and even now 6 months later. Dr. Korn genuinely cares about my needs and my own recovery. I don't feel he rushes through my appoints with me even now as I come to visit him for a follow-up. I am so happy that I no longer have the visually problems and/or tension headaches. I can actually focus better and the surgery has greatly improved my ability to read and do research work for my doctorate and for my work teaching. I feel fortunate to have Dr. Korn complete my surgery and to provide the kind of patient care that is kind and nurturing. A big thank you to Dr. Korn.
