WORTH IT
Hard to say which was worse, the turkey neck or jowls. Probably the jowls were worse, because if I didn't go around with a plastered-on smile, I looked like I was frowning. The hollows under the eyes weren't especially thrilling either.
I had a neck lift and fat transfer.
I had the procedures done with only local anesthetic, no sedation. Not because I'm a glutton for punishment, but because sedatives make me sick as a dog. It was a bit uncomfortable lying there for 5 hours, listening to the sounds of my flesh being cut. Far better, though, to be a bit uncomfortable than to puke my guts out.
There has been very little pain. The worst part was trying to sleep propped up on pillows on my back. I'm a side-sleeper. Didn't get much sleep the first couple of nights.
I'm now 8 days post-op, been back at work since Monday (only stayed half a day Mon and Tues, started back full-time on Wednesday). I'm told it will be at least a couple of months before the full effects of the procedures will be evident, but I am already pleased by what I see in the mirror.
I've been using oral and topical arnica for the swelling. My face was pretty swollen and bruised for the first week but the swelling and bruising have been going down rapidly since then.
Everyone at work knows I had cosmetic surgery. I'm not the kind of person who can keep something like that a secret. I don't think there's much of a stigma attached to it these days. I mean, it seems reasonable for a person to want to look their best, right?

Yes, it is reasonable! And you look absolutely wonderful. I can't believe you were able to return to work so quickly. This may be a silly question so apologies in advance, but . . . I keep reading about fat transfer. Where does the doc transfer the fat from? Thanks for sharing - you really do look years younger!

Thank you, Lisa! The fat came from my abdomen. It only takes a little, so it's not like having a full liposuction treatment.

Altamire55, you are looking fabulous!! I can see slight swelling but not that noticeable and I don't see anymore bruising, that's great! Are you still numb around the outer face, neck or jaw? I'am so numb, I don't feel anything around the outer part of my face, its a totally weird feeling.
Brave you for not taking the sedation! I on the other hand, puked my guts out and regret it because the whole time I kept thinking, what if I ruin the sutures and I don't heal right!!! I was horrified throwing up too, because I could barely open my mouth ......UGH, its was nothing short of awful.
Wow amazing that you went back to work so fast!! I'am a substitute Teacher, so after my 2 weeks are up and I go back, because I usually get a different school and class everyday, no one will notice.
You are right, there shouldn't be a stigma about wanting to look good as you age and spending your own money on doing so. Most my friends know that I've done, botox, fillers and lasers treatments but I didn't want to tell them about the facelift because I wanted to see if they notice a difference without me saying anything. One friend knows and she's is excited to see my results because next summer she wants Dr. Taylor to do her Turkey neck. Your looking great, keep updating!

GM, yes I'm still numb. I think it takes a long time for the numbness to completely go away. The tiny nerve fibers have to grow back. I worked as a substitute teacher for a day years ago, in a middle school. What a challenging experience. I'm afraid I didn't do too well. When I'd had enough, I yelled, "You little sh_ ts, shut the f_ _ _ up!" A sudden complete silence fell over the room. Surprisingly, the school district didn't fire me, but they moved me to a different position. You must have the patience of a saint to substitute on a long-term basis!

GM, I was pretty sure I'd puke if I did the sedation. They didn't want to to do the surgery without the sedation and said they'd keep it on standby, just in case.I lay very still the whole time and controlled my breathing, so they didn't have to sedate me. I felt so sorry for you that morning! It must have been agonizing.

Hahahaha, I've often wanted to say the exact same thing....One thing is, I rarely do Middle School, I stick with mostly Elementary level, with the exception of Kindergarten (hate it). This is my 6 yr subbing. I had planned to return to a more suitable office job several years ago, but my Mother got sick two years ago with stage 4 Gastric Cancer and I became her sole caretaker to the end and subbing was the only way I could get flexible work..... She sadly passed this May and she was very aware that I wanted a facelift and left me the money to do so and encouraged me not to hesitate because she said that she regret not doing it herself. Now, with my new hopefully "younger" look, I plan on starting a new job search in the new year.....Subbing does suck and I'am ready for a change.

It was agonizing, wish I didn't take the sedation but too late to dwell on that. If I ever have any other type of procedure or revision, I will opt for no sedation if possible, its not worth the nausea. Made the experience unpleasant at best!

2.5 Weeks After Surgery - Update

I'm still very numb around the incision sites and have had some discomfort. I resorted to Tylenol twice in the past week but not in the last couple of days.

There's still a little swelling but not nearly as much as there was at first. People who know me but don't know about the surgery know something's different, but they're not sure what. Someone commented today that my new hair style looks great.

Here's a pic. Taken with my laptop camera which is at the very bottom of the screen. Thus the weird angle. Dell really needs to find a better location for the camera!

You looked fine before, but you did look a lot older. Now you just look SO much younger! Hope your recovery continues to go well.

Wow, you are looking great!! I can see how our surgeries are similar!! Swelling has gone down considerably from your first photos! You seemed to have had a lots less bruising. Even in your earlier photos posted, I don't see much bruising, or at least you were able to camouflage it very well! I'am 12 days out and still have dark bruising showing! Love the new hair style!
