I completed Aczone 6 months ago and two rounds of doxy, along with birth control to control my 20 year treatment resistant acne.

I let my skin settle into a very minimal skin care routine and started retin A six months after the worst of the acne was over. My skin before aczone and doxy was covered in red, angry, aggressive cysts that left purple marks for months on my face. My goal with retin a is to improve the appearance of the texture of my skin and prevent lines and wrinkles from forming.

I am of Afro-Caribbean descent with light yellow skin. It is naturally combo but can become oily if I consume too much dairy.

In the three weeks I have taken retin a there is an increase of acne again but logically I know this to be normal as retin a does cause the skin cells to slough off and in the process can cause acne and other side effects.

Although my skin is getting blemishes, which is very unsettling, my forehead is completely smooth and I'm quite happy. I am going to forge through and not give up.

PA was willing to try some tried and true methods but retin a was not covered by insurance so we had to find a pharmacy that had better pricing. Seemed to listen and be very concerned about my feelings regarding acne, when most people think "it's just a pimple"

What strength on retin-a are you using?

It is .1% and I'm currently applying 3 times a week and increasing one day each week I complete. So far pretty good. :)

You're very beautiful. I went through the purge phase of the tretinoin as well which left some brown spots. Hydroquinone helped with the scars.

Really? Wow I didn't realize this was a common thing. How long was it until your pores cleared out? Did you use otc hydroquinone or rx?

Thank you so much for the compliment why didn't I say that first?! ✨

I used prescription strength. It takes a while for the scars to fade.

You are absolutely beautiful, so hopefully that is some minor comfort. Have you ever considered going to a great reputable esthetitian (spelling?). Kind of gross, but I love watching extractions on YouTube, and I became obsessed with this one person, Josepha Reina. Anyway, that got me looking for someone who could do something similar here in Florida. I found a place, "T Secret" quite close to downtown Orlando. I know that's some distance from Tampa, but not insane. They have amazing reviews. I haven't had to deal with the severity of acne that you have, but they might be worth looking in to if you feel you have exhausted other options. Check them out online anyway. They told me to go off of the retin a and glycolic acids and replace them with their natural products. Anyway, just an option you may not have explored. Best of luck!

Retin-A (tretinoin) is a form of vitamin A that helps the skin renew itself. Basically It is used to treat acne. I have read about Retin- A. The review of this product is good. But is there any product which helps to prevent your wrinkle?

You may have acne but the surrounding skin looks amazing! So clear and bright :). Have you started with a lower dosage or did you use 0.1% right away?

I am very disheartened at what is happening with my skin. Although I know this is part of the process, it is very emotionally taxing to see red, sore spots on my face again.

I had eliminated most of the acne on my skin and was fairly happy. I am reconsidering whether I should continue with retin a. These spots will know become hyperpigmented and stay for a long time. This is the opposite of what I wanted.

I am scaling back to once a week, once these spots become less inflamed and "wound like".

Have been using very gentle cleansers and the usual routine, nothing drastic. Also have taken doxy again in the event there is an active infection in my skin again.

Wish me luck. Week 4 is definitely the height of the purge. I hope it gets no worse.

My heart goes out to you.I had the most success w/TCA peels but you have a week of downtime no outside..but it helps w/marks & scarring & definitely helped clear my skin.Hope this helps..God Bless

Thank you, I have heard of those peels and am interested. I'm backing off of retin a for a few days to see if that is the cause. My skin was crystal clear until I began using it :/

Yea that could be it..you should really start out w/.5 first & work up to 1%retinol it can aggravate your skin if not used to it.Make sure you research the person before you get a peel,& don't peel off the skin, you have to let it peel on its own or you can scar..take care

Hi Nina, i gotta just say you are lovely! and you look like you're 26 not 36!! Girl i am JEALOUS!!!! anyways, Retin A will irritate your skin at first. Did same thing to me. I was like WTF have i put on my face?!!! But my doc assured me to just keep it up and start mixing it with vitamin E cream (i use Dermae you can find it at most grocery stores oddly enough in organic cosmetics section) then work up to just using the retin A on its own from .5 to 1% - it really does amazing things for my skin especially since my acne has calmed down greatly HOWEVER i gotta say the very best combo i've encountered for my cystic acne skin (i'm 35 and dealt with cystic acne forever it seems) is Methylfolate - something just on the cusp of getting renown especially for women - I was tested twice by two different docs trying to find out why my hormes were so haywire even with calming BC and found out my body does not process folate at ALL. So i started taking methylated folate (our body is supposed to methylate it on its own but some peoples do not) and THAT was the saving grace for my cystic acne - after years and years of trying to figure out how to balance my hormones that did it - worth a try at least :)

You're stunning!
I've also had most success with TCA peels but, unless you don't care how you look in public (and you're very careful about sun protection), you'll need to spend about a week at home. Red spots aside, your skin looks incredible.
