Currently med-FREE and so far so good...

A few weeks ago I started to ween myself off of the Spiro. I was taking 100mg a day (50mg in the a.m. And 50mg in the p.m.) for a week I took 75mg daily, the following week I took 50mg around midday and then the last week I took 25mg in the evening.

I'm going to be honest, the side effects from coming off of Spironolactone was ROUGH for me. Since it is a diuretic, once I started to taper off, I retained water like crazy. It stressed me out which probably led to the anxiety and then insomnia. Also had spurts of PVCs and some dizziness.

No Bueno.

I am however happy to report that so far so good. The true test will be in the next few months as I go through my cycles.
My period just ended about a week ago so we will see in a few weeks how I do with no Spiro in my system and hormonal spikes *fingers crossed*

Has it stayed clear??? I have the same type of skin

Pleased to report that yes, it has!
Thank you for the reminder, I should post another update. I will do that soon. Sorry to hear that you are going through something similar, it's a pretty heartbreaking scenario. Ask your dermatologist if Spironolactone is an option for you.

Wow so happy for you that's amazing! Did you experience any side effects while taking spiro?
User Avatar

When I first started, yes. The medication lowers your blood pressure so just typical symptoms associated with that, for example getting a little lightheaded from standing too quick. It is also a diuretic so coming off of the medication I retained quite a bit of water. All symptoms were temporary and of course worth it (for me).

Hey are you still clear or you had to get back on? How long were you on the medication before you weaned yourself off? If acne returned how long did it take to do so?

So here's the deal, in my case it's become clear that my breakouts are hormonal and what often throws me out of balance is stress. Mid/late December I underwent a serious amount of stress and I had a minor breakout (nothing like the pictures I posted when I would have those massive flare ups). I had one bigger sized (deep) blemish about an inch above my left eyebrow and a few more along my hairline (easy to conceal). I went back on the Spiro. probably around some time in Jan, I started strong, 50mg in the morning and 50mg at night. So that means that I'm right at the 3 month mark now. In these last three months I think I maybe had a few small blemishes right at the hairline (similar to what I'd experienced and noted before) smaller and easier to deal with / dry out and clear up. I'm slowly coming off of it, and am at 25mg in the morning and 25mg at night.

Stress management and self are have been high on my priority list in this new year. I did the best I could considering stressful circumstances last Dec. my goal is just to continue on this path of wellness from the inside out ;)

Thanks for sharing! I'm interested in taking spirono it afraid of the effects. How's your skin now?

Hi there! Sorry for the delay in my response. I'm excited that you are considering taking Spiro for your acne. Have you tried other methods to clear your skin up? My derm was very relaxed and non-chalant about writing me a prescription for it, he said his wife was on it and it worked wonders for her skin. I too was nervous about side effects and it seems like the more research you do (particularly online) makes the situation and fear worse!

It worked really well for me. As I wrote, it took a solid 3+ CONSECUTIVE months to truly work but it did. I stayed on it for few months longer then slowly came off of it and carefully (and nervously) began to observed my skin. I noticed that if t did flare up it would only be right before a cycle but it wouldn't be cystic and I could dry it up over night and exfoliate it away.
Remember, the successful recipe for me was the Spironolactone + Retin A

Today, skin is still clear EXCEPT when I endure massive amounts of stress. That seems to throw off my hormones and then I tend to break out a bit. I haven't had to take Spiro again but the relief in knowing I have a trick up my sleeve that actually works for me, priceless.

Thanks again! I took a round of antibiotics before a long time ago and it worked. My acne didn't go away 100% but only had 1-2 pimples. After pregnancy my acne has come back with a vengeance. I'm so happy to hear your skin is still doing great!

Thanks Eva g! I can't see the link. Can you send again? Thanks you!

That was when my acne started, when I first got pregnant at 30.. hormones just went Wacky and the adventure began (ugh). Recently had a big round of stress and had a few blemishes from it but NOTHING like when it got out of control. Also, again.. nothing like having something that works, in my arsenal -should I truly need it again.
Keep me posted ok? I hope you will document your experience too!!

I found a lotion with alpha hydroxy acid (make sure it’s on balanced) works as well as Retin a without peeling. And it’s cheap!

3 month UPDATE - Hormonal Acne Treatment

User Avatar

I can hardly believe how liberating it feels to have my skin clear again. Part of me is terrified to even express it because of how on-and-off my skin has been over the last five/six years but instead of worrying about jinxing myself, I am going to just be grateful for how it is all going in this moment.

My plan was to take both Spironolactone (50mg at 2x per day) along with Retin-A (1%) every other night, for three consistent months to give the meds time to really work. I read somewhere in a thread online that "sometimes Spiro can take upwards of three months to really have a full effect" and I took it to heart, so glad I did. Previous to April, I would take it for a solid month then try and see if I could go without it.. I tried taking it during that week before my menstrual cycle (when my skin would really break out).. I also tried lowering the dose a touch, out of random fears of consistently being on medication and none of that worked out for me.

For the first few cycles (I've had three since I decided on this game plan) I still broke out the week before my period. The first cycle of the three I broke out the worst. Hormones didn't seem to be in check quite yet and neither was my skin. The second cycle I noticed that I still generated a blemish or two but there was something different about them. They weren't as deep and they seemed to go away quicker, which I attribute to the Retin-A (powerful exfoliant).
Between the second and third cycle I had a major epiphany, I didn't feel as psychotic as I used to, just about things in general. Things that would normally send me flying off the handle, I would just take in stride or just deal with it the way I used to, like In the "long long ago" when I was seemingly more level headed (pre-1st-pregnancy days).

So now there is no doubt in my mind that hormones are the key player here and it explains why Spiro worked so well for me, it targets hormonal acne in women. If anything changes, I will post an update. Also I plan on trying to work my way off of these meds slowly and I will document that as well.

My advice to you? Stay optimistic. Hook up with a solid Dermatologist and come up with a game plan. If it doesn't work, try your best to maintain your optimism and just push on to the next treatment plan. It's all just a matter of finding out what works for your situation (I know, I'm being Captain Obvious right now). When my skin was at it's worst I got SO DEPRESSED, I felt SO HOPELESS and ANGRY. I wondered all the time WHY!? WHY on EARTH is this happening to me?? Is this karma? Was I that shitty of an individual to deserve this? The hopelessness would set in from different methods not working and the depression from having to restart something new. It was a horrible cycle. Stay lifted, hopeful and optimistic. If there is anyone who knows how brutal this scenario is, it is yours truly. Good luck to you.

Side note: I bought a Clarisonic a few months ago and I love it. I use it in conjunction with Cetaphil's Oil Control foaming Facewash.

I love what you said at the end. That is ME exactly. The more I stress out about my acne the worse it is. The more grateful I am about what I am happy about, the more I see myself glow to the point where my scars don't even matter anymore. Thanks for sharing, you are absolutely gorgeous by the way!

Thank you for your words <3
I'm so sorry you've had to go through this also. Seems there is always something bigger at play, like little messages telling us to slow down, practice self care, observe, be grateful and be selective of what we put on and into our bodies.

For me stress is my trigger, hands down. Slowly but surely making progress.

Thanks for reading and commenting! Xoxo

I can definitely relate to this!!! When it was at its worst I wouldn't leave the house. I called in sick to work. I have very fair skin so makeup never helped cover the minor breakouts. I envy the girls that can't go out with no foundation! MY dermatolgist was gonna prescribe sprinolactone but since I wanted to start taking birth control anyways put me on Yaz. Kill 2 birds with one stone. Both balance out your hormones. Haven't had an issue since and it's been 2 years!

Chelsea, I'm soooo glad to hear you found what works for you and your body! It's crazy how you don't know how disappointing and tragic acne is until it is happening to you. Keep the updates going if anything changes! Big huge hugs you way.

My 1st hormonal spike since treatment

User Avatar

*sigh* wish I had something better to report but I'm at that week before my period and I can always tell when my hormones are crazy because of the intensity of my PMS. Now over the last 5 years, my skin tends to break out during my "week before" and this cycle is proving to be no different.

I have been on Spiro consistently for the last few months now. I'm holding onto something I have read which stated that it can take 3 months before it is truly effective.

In addition to the Spiro, I added Retin-A (2x per week) about a month ago. I am still easing into it, after being totally freaked out by everyone's experience on here with the "purge" phase.

What I noticed with the Retin-A is that if I do get a blemish, it seems to process faster. I apply heat in the evening and by the next morning there would be a head on it which I could just pick right off and drain the contents (deelish, I know).

My acne before was DEEP and cystic, usually painful and would rarely move to the surface.

Here I am at my first "week before" after starting to Spiro and Retin-A combo. I'm definitely breaking out :( the actual blemishes themselves don't seem to be as bad as before but there are still plenty of them and enough to make me self conscious in public (WITH makeup on).

Stay tuned for more...

Try Photodynamic therapy. The results are amazing and most of the time insurance will cover a %. It's used for resistant acne and has been called the best treatment for acne since Accutane. Some people, after just one treatment, can go into remission for 2 years. It works great for cystic acne. I know how you feel....I used to have beautiful skin but now I have cystic acne through my cheeks the past few months. It's very destructive for your self-esteem...expecially when you develop permanent scarring. But I would be shocked if Photodynamic therapy doesn't help your problem. I wish you luck on your acne Journey and God bless.

What a great tip Miranda, thank you SO MUCH for reaching out. I remember doing some research on it and considered it but it was SOOOO EXPENSIVE (as is everything). The formula I have going appears to be working but you're never completely out of the woods with acne (particularly hormonal). So in a few months from now I will reevaluate. I'm going to write an update to this spiro/Retin-A journey in about a few weeks as I will have wrapped a consecutive 3 month trial with those two *fingers crossed* what I don't want to do however is stay on medication for long stretches of time so if when I come off of it, I begin to break out again... I will definitely be looking into the light therapy.

Sorry to hear you've been having to deal with the cystic acne as well right now. It's all about finding the right combo and I believe you will. Keep us posted?

Cystic Acne can be so painful and take weeks to heal. I've found that an acne mask applied as a spot treatment works wonders for this type of acne blemish. The product I am familiar with is Esan Acne Spot Treatment. You make a paste and apply it to the pimple. Leave the mask on till it dries then rinse and apply your moisturizer. I reduces soreness and usually gets rid of the pimple in a couple of days. And, no skin damage or dark spot.
