Had surgery earlier today!

Hi guys,
You've all been extremely helpful so I figure it's only for me to pay my dues!
I had my surgery with doctor rival earlier today (aug 27/19) I booked it April 29th. Although I had an OHIP referral due to breathing problems I paid the full cost of 8000+ tax. I had a open septorhinoplasty and he described my nose as S shaped. I had two appointments total prior to my surgery, both of which were very brief and almost seemed rushed. I attribute this to his many years of experience and trusted that he would be able to make the best judgement calls for my nose. I'm attaching his digital imagining although I ended up telling him it was too conservative. My biggest concern was how my nose looks warped from the front, and different on both sides (lol) I also asked him to make it thinner from the front and he said he'd try. Based on what I've seen he can work wonders on side profiles, but I'm also hoping on significant change from the front.
It is a mere 3ish hours after my surgery. I had a panic attack once I woke up (prone to anxiety) and was very uncomfortable. I asked for pain medication and it helped with the anxiety. Most uncomfortable aspect of everything was the constant itching and being unable to touch my nose. Was also shivering quite a bit.
Car ride home was very unpleasant as I was very nauseous. I tried to eat some bread and it only made it worse. Once I got home, I was able to eat crushed banana and took some of his prescribed pain medication which helped a lot. Worst feeling so far has been my dry throat; I definitely didn't expect it to be this bad. I'm attaching some pictures of day one. Bruising and swelling has already begun and I'm nervous for the days to come. Feeling a lot better now than I did a few hours ago and have been able to eat mashed potatoes (highly recommend) and pasta.
Will try to post daily photos and be as helpful as possible. Feel free to comment or message me any questions!

I’m sorry you had a panic attack after surgery. I’ve had them before too and they are the worst! The initial discomfort will subside. Hang in there!
Best of luck in your healing journey! I’ll be sure to follow your progress.

Need to follow along your journey. I actually did mine just last week. Looking forward to your photos.

Received my “on the table” photos / Day 2
tb716222August 28, 2019
Received a check in email from Shannon at Dr Rivals office today along with my on the table pictures (which I’m sharing with you all of course.) I’m happy with my side profile but concerned about other views as the bridge still looks very wide. Dr Rival said this is most swelling and it should go down. He had to break both sides of my nose to narrow it so I assume that’s going to make swelling a b**** for me.
Bruising and swelling today has been really bad. Not as much bleeding but definitely didn’t think my bridge would be so swollen. It’s moved up to one of my eyes and isn’t very comfortable. Made a sad attempt with the saline spray and polysporin but was too intimated to touch it too much. Going to try again tomorrow hopefully with less stress.

looks good - congratulations! how are you feeling a couple days out?

So my swelling has gone up a ridiculous amount and has gross red bruising all over my eyes. Have had to take advantage of the pain medication. Both my eyes are massively swollen, one is almost swollen shut. Today was the day I've felt most regret, as I was not expecting swelling to be this severe and uncomfortable. It's painful in the sense that you can feel your skin so stretched and puffy, and your eyes just feel so weird. I'm really hoping I can say it's worth it at the end of this but right now, I just want the swelling to stop. This seems to be much more severe in open surgeries that require several fracture as mine has. I'll post a full update either tonight or tomorrow. hoping this starts to ease up soon.

fingers crossed for you - based on what I've read it's totally normal to feel regret during certain points in your recovery. It's going to get better and you'll have your new nose for the rest of your life - although right now it must be terrible...

Day 2/3 post op
tb716222August 30, 2019
So I messed up the days in my previous update, as o didn’t use “post of” day references, so this is actually day 2 and 3.
Sleep - I realized I didn’t discuss this earlier, probably because there was nothing to talk about, as I didn’t get much sleep. I find it very hard sleeping elevated on my back, making this all very difficult. Since the surgery, I wake up every 2-3 hours. Usually hav to ice or take pain medication to fall asleep. It sucks.
Food/water - definitely not eating or drinking enough. Find it hard to drink water and chew. Mashed potatoes, bananas and yogurt have been my go tos.
Day 2 - swelling was insane. Woke up to the most uncomfortable situation I’ve ever had. Lots of pain. Both my eyes were almost swollen completely shut. That night I almost fainted, and that’s when the nausea and headache began. Worst day thus far.
Day 3 - woke up to a ridiculous headache. Have spent most of the day in bed, due to that and constant nausea. I’ve found it hard to eat. Swelling isn’t worse, but I don’t know if I can say it’s changed at all. Really praying this is my toughest day as this whole process has been mentally and physically exhausting. I definitely was not expecting recovery to be this painful/uncomfortable. Wonder if this is because I had to have an open surgery, with multiple fractures. At this moment, I can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel, just want my old face back. Hopefully this changes in the next few days

This sounds really intense! Are you on pain killers what / how much / with what frequency? I'm guessing that's where the nausea is coming from... I hope it gets better for you soon! Makes me nervous for upcoming combo surgeries!

I'm on T3s! Have had to take 3 today, was taking 5-6 every other day. Talked to Dr Rivals office today and they suggested Gravol for nausea - said it's likely because all the medication. Swelling is slightly improved today so I'm hoping I'll start feeling better as of tomorrow! Are you having the same surgery?

That's positive! Do you think the pain you were experiencing on the meds was mostly from the swelling? Are you still on soft foods (or any food at all...)? I'm starting to think about food prep but not sure how I'll feel! Yep, rhino, lower blep, mid face lift, lip lift and a breast aug... all at once! It's going to be rough - so any recovery tips you have will be much appreciated!

I think the pain was a combination of stuff, first day was definitely from the surgery, yesterday from the swelling and today from the headache. I don't have too much of an appetite so soft food have just been easier to chew, due to the heavy swelling. And oh wow!! Honestly that sounds very intense, best of luck to you! Not sure what I can recommend, but I'd say definitely try to be in your best help before then!! Eat very healthy, your body will have to be very strong to go through that
Thank you for paying it forward and sharing your experience. I hope your recovery is going smoothly. Please keep us posted!
