My Rhino Journey with Dr. Shafi

Since the last couple of years I had grown increasingly conscious of the dorsal hump on the bridge of my nose which looked quite odd with the rest of my features. It literally stuck out like a sore thumb.

I had a consultation with Dr. Shafi in April 2019. Instead of vocalizing all that he thought was wrong with my nose, he made me stand in front of a mirror and prioritize what areas of my nose I felt strongly against.
As an individual who had been obsessing over her nose since quite a while, I quickly picked out 3.
1- Dorsal Hump (The curved and raised part of my nasal bridge- like an eagle’s beak)
2- Hanging Columella (In simpler terms it is an excess strip of what visibly appears to be skin between my two nostrils making my nose much look unflatteringly long)
3- Slight deviation of my nose

He then took me back to my seat. He agreed with my problem areas and told me what was achievable and what wasn’t so as to help me set realistic expectations. He asked me to keep my queries in mind and fire away after he was done explaining the goals of the surgery (open rhinoplasty), the aftercare and possible complications. After divulging all the details (a speech/monologue I’m sure he has given so many times that it is somewhat routine for him). He patiently cleared all the queries I and my parents had regarding the operation and post op care. He understood what was routine for him was novel for us and hence kindly addressed all our concerns: elaborating only when needed.

-On the Day of the surgery, he met me once again asked me to reiterate my priorities so as to ensure both of us were on the same page. His confident demeanor and jovial attitude made me relax in his presence and the next time we met was after the operation.

After I gained consciousness post rhinoplasty, I was groggy and disoriented but not in pain. An ice pack had been carefully placed to minimize swelling post op. Dr. Shafi, meanwhile, had met my parents and updated them about operative overview and detailed the after care once again. (No heavy lifting, no bending the head, regular icing and staying happy)

My parents and I have found his mannerisms to be nothing but professional, succinct and polite.
The first night after my rhinoplasty was the worst. My throat was as dry as a sandpaper and Dr. Shafi had graciously reminded us to contact him if need be for any post op difficulty/query that may arise. We did so and he was quick to respond.

1 week post op-
We went to get my cast over the nose removed along with the sutures.
The first time I saw my nose it was extremely swollen and my face didn’t look like mine. It felt foreign. The hump was gone but with the amount of swelling I didn’t like it HOWEVER in our consultation, Dr. Shafi had explicitly said that **The actual result of the rhinoplasty comes in about a year because the skin is re-draping over the new structure and the result is obscured by the swelling** and so our expectations were realistic and I waited for the actual result.

1 month post op-
The swelling had considerably gone down but my nose was still very numb. This is when I started to see what my potential result was going to be. It felt my nose looked different everyday but definitely better than my nose before my rhinoplasty.

6 month post op-
My nose looked better and better everyday as most of the swelling had settled but I started noticing a furrow/cavity where my hump used to be. Feeling worried I contacted Dr Shafi who was very responsive and addressed my concern immediately. I was told to give it another 6 months as this still was not the final result of my surgery.

1 year post op
I am now approximately one year post op! And I am ECSTATIC with the results. My nose is so much more harmonious with my face and it looks beautiful if I say so myself. ALHAMDULILAH Dr. Shafi’s surgical dexterity made having a natural looking result possible by the Grace of ALLAH - one where I feel comfortable with the way my nose fits with the rest of my facial features. He fixed all 3 of my initial concerns- the dorsal hump, the hanging columella and the slight deviation of my nose!
I am immensely grateful for our journey (it was as much mine as it is his since he also had to wait for my results afterall )

As a medical student having been on the opposite side of the operating room I had witnessed his laser focus, attention to detail and sheer grit to strive for the perfection/goals he had promised his patients. Nothing makes him happier than seeing his patients happy and content with his work. I am confident I made the right choice by having him be my surgeon because I truly am content and happy with my results.

Thank you Dr. Shafi!

P.S Sorry for the length of it, I wanted it to be a detailed review so as to help anyone considering this surgery and to highlight the level of attention, care and confidentiality Dr. Shafi provides to his patients as having been one myself.

In summary - I made the right choice! My nose looks FANSTASTIC
