Perfect Nose!

Perfect Nose!

WORTH IT
I had a rhinoplasty with Dr. Kiral in April. The booking process was easy and straightforward. They coordinated with me to ensure my flights from Canada would make it with ample time to do a consultation the day before surgery. I paid $8400 USD.

To preface, I am a healthcare professional in Canada, and have high standards of healthcare due to this. I knew that the hospital facilities would not have the same standards as Canada, and set my expectations at a realistic level. I did get plastic surgery insurance from a local company in Istanbul to protect myself and to have in case proof was asked for while leaving Istanbul as medical tourism insurance is now mandatory.

At the consultation, Dr. Kiral took photos and simulated my new nose, which I loved. I paid in cash and had surgery booked for the next morning. On the morning of surgery, I arrived to the hospital and was checked in. The receptionists knew little English but that is what Google Translate is for. I found the “conversation” function especially useful during my time in the hospital. Once checked in, I was taken to a very large private hospital room with a mini fridge, two washrooms, a living room area, a hospital bed for me, and a couch for my support person to sleep on. It was clean, but not the normal levels I am used to (I wouldn’t use the shower there).

My nurse came in (spoke English) and a phlebotomist came to draw some blood for bloodwork while the nurse set up an ECG. After that, a healthcare aide came in and got me in my gown and compression stockings for surgery. The anesthesiologist came to speak to me as well (minimal English). I was taken up to the operating room in a tiny elevator with a lot of people, and they were all really friendly and using translator apps on their phones to talk to me. They treated me like a colleague and were very sweet which was appreciated. I didn’t have a bad experience with a single person the entire time. Dr. Kiral was waiting in the operating room. After surgery I woke up very nauseous in the OR, so I highly recommend asking for Zofran if that is something that happens to you while waking up from anesthetic too.

I was taken back to my room, given ice for my face and once I was more awake, they brought me a tray of dinner that was delicious! They also brought my companion a lunch when I went into the OR, dinner at the same time as me, and a light breakfast for both of us in the morning.

I was discharged the next morning and went back to my Airbnb to ice my face for the rest of the day. I did not bruise AT ALL (not even a little bit). However, my upper lip became quite large and swollen on day 2-4, along with light swelling of my cheeks. I also noticed that my nose was incredibly upturned and I could see right into my nostrils while looking straight forward. This scared me but I knew it was the swelling of the tissue pulling my nose back. I took arnica tablets and bromelain for a month pre-op, through recovery, and for 3 weeks post-op.

My recovery was easy. I did light walking to explore Istanbul, but didn’t push it as you don’t want to raise your heart rate or blood pressure with delicate stitches in place. I ate mostly softer foods like yogurt parfaits, rice and curry, chopped salads, and fruit.

On day 7, my cast was removed, photos taken, and a new cast was put on. The new cast had to be squeezed to your nose and it was the most painful part of the whole recovery process, but was over quickly. I got to see my nose before the second cast was put on and was in shock with how different I looked, but knew it wasn’t the end result. I still liked it 1000x better than my old nose though.

I travelled back to Canada that night. No issues other than getting stuffy on the flight. It was helpful to have a bit of saline spray, gauze, and the provided antibiotic ointment from the hospital to freshen up my stitch line over the 18h of travel. I presented my fit to fly form from the surgeon once at my flight check in, and had no issues clearing passport control or security.

The only medical things I would bring if I did it all over again: some 4x4 gauze to wipe my nose drainage with (doesn’t leave tissue pieces behind like Kleenex when it catches on stitches), my own aerosol saline spray, and small round ice packs to keep in the Airbnb freezer. I definitely overpacked medical supplies but that’s just the healthcare professional in me lol.

My second cast came off on its own 11 days after it was put on. My nose was extremely swollen underneath and I taped it with the recommended beige paper medical tape. I had to tape it for 3 weeks all day and night, then just at night. The nostril retainer stays in all day and night for two months, then just at night.

I am extremely happy with the way my nose fits my face. He kept it relatively the same from the front other than making it straighter. My nostrils were completely reconstructed as one used to be collapsed due to a bad broken nose. He also fixed my severely deviated septum as well, so I can fully breathe through both nostrils now!! My side profile looks incredible. I am so so happy with the results and am glad I went to Dr. Kiral. If you are looking for a super super natural nose, he is probably not the surgeon to go to. However, if you are looking for a Barbie nose or hybrid Barbie-natural nose, he is your guy. Just know that your results will never be “perfect” as facial asymmetry and anatomy limits what can be done to structures safely. But I think that mine was done beautifully and compliments my face well! I am so grateful to him and his team!
