The Biggest Mistake of my Life

The purpose of this review is to help others make common sense decisions about African American rhinoplasty and vetting the right provider. Not all provider testimonials on this site can be trusted, and I am proof that such narrow information will likely end as a costly mistake. However, please do take what I have to say very seriously because it will save you time, effort, money and grief.
It is nearly 5 months following my rhinoplasty procedure and I still feel as I did one week after the procedure. In fact, I am worse today. I allowed considerable time as well as exercised reasonable patience with both my body's natural process and the provider's skill to come to some level of fruition before posting this review. However, in light of the misery which I have been forced to live, here is an honest assessment of my rhinoplasty experience.First, I have been unable to breathe properly due to copious amounts of blockage in both nostrils. When this problem was first brought to the attention of the practice's medical assistant, she dismissed it as "boogies" and "crust" and instructed me to continue flushing my nose with saline. I neither have had boogies nor crust since approximately 15-20 days after the procedure. So, at 60 days post-op, that explanation was reckless and dismissive. I cannot sleep due to serious nasal congestion to which Flonase, etc., have provided little to no relief, and been generally unresponsive. Relief from nasal sprays is temporary and ineffective for my problem. From mid-afternoon to early evening, breathing is better but still blocked. However, after 9 pm, I am suffering.Secondly, my nose is 50 percent larger than it was prior to the procedure which defeats the entire purpose of having undergone rhinoplasty. There is no evidence thus far that it will ever begin to look like the computerized image upon which the provider and I agreed one day prior to the procedure. In fact, I have very little hope that this result will ever be achieved within the next 5 months. I cannot even look at myself in the mirror first thing in the morning without being horrified. Upon waking, I look as though I have been punched in the nose. Additionally, my nose is as hard as a rock, extremely oily and cannot be moved. By mid-afternoon, the swelling and hardness have subsided, albeit, very little. These issues were brought up with the provider who unfortunately could recall very few details about my procedure. Moreover, while the provider was concerned and suggested that I travel from 12 hours away for a consult, he offered very little advise for how to deal with my breathing problems. There was also a futile attempt at explaining why I was experiencing these issues particularly in comparison to the second opinion in which I received only a week ago. I only had to drive 30 minutes for this opinion, and it was a credible opinion. After spending $1200 to travel 12 hours for a 5 minute office visit, I am livid. Plus, I still cannot breath. To make matters worse, and according to the provider, I will need revision surgery to fix the excessive swelling which in his opinion is as a result of enlarged turbinates which had regrown from the rhinoplasty procedure of 4 months prior. Apparently, the turbinates began regrowing 30-60 days following the procedure and do not appear to be slowing down. I could have surgery now to remove the turbinates which is highly likely. Lastly, part of why we chose a provider versus another is due to rapport. When we get an overall good feeling from the folks who run the front office it makes our decision-making easier. PSI Miami office staff get one star for their unprofessionalism, poor response time or lack thereof, and uncanny ability to make you feel unimportant. I could have just taken $7500 and put it through a shredder. Or, I could have gone to a provider in my city where the most educated, highly skilled and credentialed medical professionals in the world perform rhinoplasty surgeries on people who look like me. In the end, I still would have saved $3500.

To make matters worse, neither Dr. Ghershi nor his office has bothered to respond to my requests for help. I am due for 30 day follow up that was never scheduled. I don't think that they care one iota about people which is deplorable. I made a mistake twice.
I actually met with Dr. G last week in person and am scheduled for a revision in April. He agreed the scar tissue that formed has altered the original result of his work. How can you tell that you are on track for similar problems? What made you ultimately decide to let him perform your revision? Did he say he was going to use techniques during surgery go try and stop some of the excess scar tissue from forming? I've read about surgeons using carefully placed sutures to anchor the skin to the cartilage and keep some of the tissue from pushing the skin out and messing up the refinement. Def keep us posted on your follow ups. When I was there the office was very busy and for me to have to wait four months out they must be slammed pack. Best of lucky girl!!
I may need to see an ear, nose, and throat doctor to have the scar tissue removed. It can be done without harming any of the post-surgical structures of the nose.
I never thought that my skin was very thick. Average. The nose is larger now than before the procedure.
