CONSULTATION REVIEW: Red Flags
I did not have surgery with this doctor, but I did notice some red flags at our consultation that I wanted to share for others. A very comment critique I hear for surgeons is that they are not receptive to any worries or complaints about their work following the surgery. I experienced this first hand after my first rhinoplasty with another surgeon years ago; they are nice until the cast comes off and you voice some concerns, and then you are on your own.
Primarily, during my consultation with Dr. Conrad, he spoke at me for about 40 minutes. I maybe said a few sentences if prompted, but it was mostly him talking to me about his degrees and accomplishments. The one thing I did like about him which is why I gave him two stars is that he immediately pointed out everything wrong with my nose (even some things I couldn't pinpoint into words). I liked this because it meant he had a good eye and he probably wouldn't overlook it on the operating table. Asides from this, the whole 40 minutes felt like a sales pitch. He asked me what I do for work and then suggested I pay for around the clock care in a private clinic with an included revision down the road. He quoted me about 18k for a revision. I did like the idea of an included revision, but I'll get to why that's problematic.
Later in the consultation, he took out a photo of a woman and said "isn't she beautiful? Would you ever be able to tell she had her nose done?" I responded "well no, but I also don't like her nose." He got offended and said "what are you talking about, her nose is perfect! Her nose looks flawless!" This was the major red flag for me. This is where the paradox of a "free" revision comes into play: surgeons entice you with a revision "if needed," but it's very easy for them dismiss your complaints and desires afterwards, thereby determining you don't in fact quality for a revision. He also asked who did my primary rhinoplasty, and when I told him the name and how unsatisfactory the result was, he said "no, that's a great surgeon with many awards."
Again, Dr. Conrad did NOT operate on me so I cannot vouch to his skill. I can say he only talked about himself for 40 minutes, tried to up-sell me, and then reacted poorly when I told him I did not like an example of his work,
