I started to notice my neck area around 46 years...

I started to notice my neck area around 46 years old with loose skin and recently the jowls area. Over the past 5 years I interviewed plastic surgeons and they all had different opinions of me having a facelift. I did a lot of research and also a person who knows about the skin industry and has knowledge with the latest technology I somewhat knew what works and what does not work in this industry.

So my husband and I decided to go for it and have are facelift,s done together. Our surgeon had me go first since I'M the chicken of the bunch. We had a nurse care for us for 2 nights post surgery. It was the most painful experience I went through and could not believe a few of my friends never said anything about recovery time. Trying to sleep at night on your back and not being able to turn on your side was not fun and keeping propped up with pillows. So many pillows to try and get comfortable. You must have very soft soft pillows so you can support your neck. This discomfort went on 4 to 5 weeks. When the staples were finally removed the pressure slowly went away. I was told you can numbness around the head up to a year. It was helpful to have my husband going through the same experience so we could compare. We look very natural and a few friend never said a word about our appearance. Which is a good thing meaning we look very refreshed and natural. It has now been 7 weeks and things are much better and sleeping on my side and incisions around ear have healed well un-noticeable.

Thank you for sharing! I'm glad you had the nurse for the first two nights. That was very smart. I think it's so cool that you got the facelifts together. What a team!

My husband and I also both got facelifts/necklifts/blephs one month apart. I also went first....:-) He was the gung ho one, however. I think we both look much better, but he still has a lot of loose skin on his neck, although it is not at all crepy anymore. He also recovered much faster and seemed to have an easier time of it than I did. His neck stitches presented some problems and he had to be resewn...:-) He's fine, now. So nice to see you and your husband decided to do it together.

Hello Zoomin-I was intrigued by your comment about having access to someone in the skin industry. Did this person contribute to your decision to go with a facelift and forego the lasers? I am at a similar juncture: whether to give the lasers a go for sagging facial skin/jowling or go under the knife. I really hoped the lasers would work but after I read the below comments from a Plastic Surgeons website it was more than enough reason to give pause. (Keep in mind the surgeon does offer laser treatments so he is not necessarily biased towards surgery because that is all he does. ) I have had 2 laser treatments (YAG) and whether the atrophy around my cheeks and loss of facial fat is due to the laser or is just another sign of aging is hard to say. The skin ‘industry’ so wants lasers to be the ‘brass ring’ that I’m sure it is very tempting to ‘give the ladies what they want and ignore the potential pitfalls down the road. Actually, they could be increasing their business because after the loss of facial fat we’ll be right back in their offices looking for more fillers. Any feedback you have would be greatly appreciated. FROM DOCTORS WEBSITE: Devices that use Radiofrequency and Ultrasound energy ( Thermage, Refirme and Ultherapy), seem to appear and disappear with an incredible frequency. Dr. Maercks does not recommend using these techniques on or near the face and recommends extreme caution elsewhere in the body. Unfortunately deep heating of the face reduces facial fat (required for a youthful appearance) and produces abnormal deep scarring, what industry leaders want you to believe is ‘healthy collagen production). The biggest problem with deep heating of facial tissues is that it causes a relatively uncontrolled concentric contraction of the deep facial tissues. From a plastic surgeons perspective, this is a recipe for disastrous aesthetic consequences. These modalities are commonly used by practitioners outside the field of plastic surgery who focus largely on the cheek area. What results is irregular scar build up(called ‘collagen production by manufacturers), and because of the concentric contraction, problems can occur with eyelid distortion and malfunction, irregular and unnatural mouth appearance and ablation of the natural concavities and convexities that make the human face attractive. The lines of tension in a natural beautiful face are different throughout the face and are the focal point of a beautiful facelift. Even more unfortunate is the fact that most of these results occur months to a year after the procedure. The time lag and severity of problems leads patients to seek a different practioner for correction and the well-meaning original practitioners never learn of these consequences they have produced. Both of you look very good. I also had a face lift a year ago but I still look the same! The " natural" Face lift is so natural that I wonder if Dr. FH, Dallas (certify plastic surgeon) removed any of my excess skin! Too bad I did not take pictures. If anyone is thinking of having a face lift please go to a doctor that specializes on facelifts. Just the face. And make sure that you don't get a "natural" look.
