Coming Up On 4 Weeks Post-Op

Not much has changed since my last update. My nose still looks pretty great, and I'm curious to see how it will change over the next 6 months. I'm thinking not drastically since there doesn't appear to be much swelling at baseline, plus this was a closed rhinoplasty with no tip work. At three weeks post-op, I don't think I could be happier.

My skin is generally still oilier than it was before - Clean & Clear blotting papers are really helping, as is using a mattifying sunscreen during the day. I don't anticipate this "excessive" oiliness lasting forever. The oiliest parts of my face continue to be my nose, upper lip, and glabella. I have had a few breakouts, but nothing serious.

My smile is still about 20-30% frozen. I hear that it's not uncommon, so I'm not worrying about it too much. I just keep a stiff upper lip whenever possible.

I worked out for the first time last week (I was exactly 10 days post-op), and I was surprisingly able to exercise at about 90% intensity. Yesterday I exercised at 100% intensity. I was definitely not expecting being able to work out that hard so soon following the procedure, but I made sure to start out slow and listen to my body/nose. My nose did not swell much at all, despite over an hour of rowing, treadmill, and weights.

Still feel like this is one of the best decisions I've made. Period.

Update

It's only been three days since the cast came off and I look totally amazing which either means I have awesome genes and heal quickly, or Dr. Stein is a wizard...or both.

I have zero bruising, the upper lip swelling has healed by 50%, and the only swelling on my nose is on the sides. I look better than I've ever looked and I can tell it's going to look great in 5 weeks.

More to come....

Cast Came Off Today

A few updates before I mention the cast removal process:

My energy level today is markedly better than it was yesterday. I'm surprised at what a day makes - I would usually be knocked out by 9:00, and a slave to the sofa for most of the day, but that has thankfully not been the case. My sense of smell and taste have returned 100%. I was worried that it would take longer. I would say it returned about 80% when the cast was still on this morning, and by the time I got home after having it removed, it was at 100%. It's nice to be able to use your nose to know when to take the trash out.

I was not anxious about having the cast removed until I was sitting in the chair and the nurse actually began removing it. I think that part of the reason as to why I wasn't anxious coming in is, again, because I have not seen evidence of Dr. Stein doing a bad job. Neverthless, I imagine anyone would be afraid of a change and it was no different to me in that moment. When I was handed the mirror, I was surprised that I looked different but that feeling didn't last too long. I was reassured that I was healing very well and both the nurses and Dr. Stein seemed pleased with the results, and were very friendly and understanding about why I may be surprised. I think it's in the packet that they give you during your pre-op that they specifically mention something like: "if we tell you that you're healing well/look good, trust us because we know what a healing nose is supposed to look like." Something along those lines. Since I have no experience with surgery whatsoever, I figure it's best not to worry, and just trust the guy who's literally done this thousands of times and the nurses who've unbandaged people for years as well. I'm glad I did trust them because when I got home, I started getting really excited about how my nose was looking - I was looking more like myself (a better version, but still myself). Yes, there's some swelling on the sides of my nose, but the tip already dropped nicely and I don't see any visible scarring.

It's still just one week post-op and I know that my nose will continue to change over the next several weeks and months. So far, it's pretty awesome.

Dr. Stein is a very skilled surgeon and appears to set very high standards for himself and his staff - the nurses and financial administrator are especially sweet. I am two weeks post-op, and am extremely pleased with the results. I requested that he fix the dorsal hump on my nose, as well as narrow my alar base. He achieved the perfect balance and gave me the nose I've always wanted - one that fits my face proportionately and is aesthetically pleasing. I couldn't be happier with the results.
