Getting 'Em Removed - Portland, OR

ORIGINAL POST

Hi All, My personal experience mirrors many of...

WORTH IT$4,800
Hi All,

My personal experience mirrors many of yours - I wanted my silicone implants at the time I got them (12 years ago, 34A to 34C) but now I am older, more confident and it's time to go back to natural. And I could not be more thrilled!

I am so thrilled about the idea that I'm scared I'm not thinking through all the repercussions. So please ladies, can you provide me with advice to deal with the transition?

Here are some questions about my worries:
- how differently did you're clothes fit? was that difficult?
- did you buy pads for your bras?
- did you have to explain it to co-workers / friends? (a number of them don't know, and I just realized that a lot more women probably do this procedure in the winter, huh?)
- do other people look at you like something is different but they just can't put their finger on it?
- should I start wearing baggy tops or try to squish down my boobs to make the transition easier?
- was it hard to adjust to looking at your new proportions in the mirror?

I would love to hear about your experiences or any advice you might have.

Thank you kindly,

Emmarie

Hi emmarie and welcome to this very supportive site! I'm only 8 days post-surgery so can't address all of your questions yet. I told no one at work and no one has said anything. I've been careful with what I've worn because I have the compression/sports bra on for now which does no favors. Once I have a regular bra, I don't think it will be very noticeable. I do think there will be tops and blouses that I won't be able to wear because they won't fit well or be flattering. Gee, guess I'll have to shopping at Ann Taylor and The Loft. :-) I'm very happy with how I look although the right breast is still pretty swollen. Can't wait to be symmetrical. :-)

Thanks so much for sharing - and congratulations to you! I am really happy I found this site - such great information and community. I think you have good advice - just don't tell anyone at work. It's hard to do when I'm excited about it and it's on my mind, but it creates unnecessary gossip. And yes, the upside is an excuse to go shopping! I'm feeling a little more calm about the whole thing and REALLY looking forward to getting it done!

Hi Emmarie - I am going to try to answer each question for you: - how differently did you're clothes fit? Not really different. I found that I have more clothes that fit better (like button down shirts) than worse. - did you buy pads for your bras? No. I always planned to start over and buy new bras after. - did you have to explain it to co-workers / friends? Oh, hell no. Only my 'intimate' family and friends (people who knew I had implants) were told. No one else has asked me. - do other people look at you like something is different but they just can't put their finger on it? Not really. - should I start wearing baggy tops or try to squish down my boobs to make the transition easier? Well, common sense. Probably don't emphasize the boobs with padded bras and busty shirts right before and then show up the next day compressed flat if you don't want people to notice, lol. - was it hard to adjust to looking at your new proportions in the mirror? Yes, absolutely. This is the hardest part - dealing with your own self perception... One thing I learned (along your lines of questions) is that no one notices, analyzes, criticizes and thinks about my boobs even nearly as much as I do. Acquaintences, co-workers, people on the street, etc dont even notice! Not to say I am disappointed, but before explant I *assumed* my boob shape and size was on the forefront of everyone else's mind too. It isn't. People are all obsessed with their own life. All that being said, some of it depends on your implant size. Removing a 200cc implant makes much less of a difference than a 700cc, obviously. Best of luck, fellow Oregon girl. You will be fine. All these worries pre-explant are normal, but things work themselves out after surgery!

Hi Luv, Such great advice! It's so true we obsess about aspects of our appearance more than anyone else. And I know this because I have studied social psychology and it's called the 'spotlight effect' and STILL it's hard not to fall for it! *sigh* I just came from reading your profile and such good information! And you're progress looks amazing Going into this removal I had no clue about the capsules so it's good to have those opinions. Also the discussion of the post-surgery and sports bras really helpful. Thank you, thank you!

I am proud that so many Oregon girls are here, explanting. I think our local culture here supports being natural a lot more than other regions of the country, and I am always happy to know my neighbor ladies are getting these bags out too! This site has given me the chance to chat with locals and women from all over - if you live in LA, Miami, NYC, etc there is a whole level of pressure from outside due to the lifestyle and fashion culture! It's got to be a lot more intense when you are putting yourself into a minority. We are kind of lucky to live in "REI Country" because even today it's raining and I am dressed in waterproof boots and layers of high performance sportswear topped off with a waterproof Columbia jacket. By necessity we are a casual dress region, and we layer and cover up a lot. Plus there are lots of hippie boobies around, and crunchy granola organic vibe to our state, we are more likely to hike, bike, run or surf than wear a bikini (it's cold!). As long as *you* are ok with yourself, your friends and neighbors in OR are probably some of the most pro-natural boob people in the US!

Don't forget that Dallas is known for big hair and big boobs! ;-)

Hi Luv, Let me be pun-ful and say I LOVED your post - and I love Oregon (though when I see you write 'Oregon girls' I keep thinking of the song Oregon Girl by SSLYBY, great tune if you don't know it). So I'm updating my review and wanted to let you know "in full disclosure" :)

Hi Enmarie. My explant and lift are scheduled for 5/30, so I can't really comment on your questions. I think, though, that LuvRealBoobsInOR is right on target with her answers. It's natural to think that others will notice the difference. In reality, though, they might think that something is different about you following explant, but they likely won't hone in on your breasts. We're all just so focused on our boobs right now that we think others are, too! Good luck as you move forward in the process. Like you, I'm thrilled and scared at the same time, but I know that explanting is the right thing to do. You'll find great support on this site. Hang in there!

Wow. Only a few days to go for you! Looking forward to hearing about your progress. You are right that I am so focused on them right now, it's difficult to think otherwise. Really looking forward to the procedure, but still need to concentrate on getting my ducks in a line between now and then! Great to have this community as a sounding board and to get advice, such an asset.

You will love having the Natural again! Three weeks post op, my clothes fit again, better! I went from a 38 D to a 36 small c..between a b and c really. Anyway, still in compression bras, but! Clothes feel better on me! I have bought some lightly lined bras, for special times out and about where I may feel I need it. I thought I would be hiding myself, I find I am more proud of being small chested, then when I looked like a street [RS bleep] in Vegas. :) kidding, but kinda true! I kept my implants dirty little secrets for most their ugly hard lives. Except for my Husband who wanted them, X husband, and the one now, thankful my Husband now, is a leg man. HA! at 6-1.. I can say I have that covered! I was kinda hiding my big breast all along, so Not sure if people will pinpoint things or not? My Nabor ladies that sit around and gossip about everyone, sorta looked twice at my Chest the other day, No matters though! I just think It looks like Ive gotten healthier and happier! Which I truly have, so not going to share with anyone that makes no matter anyway! The mirror was a little strange those first two weeks. I had to find Patience and have faith! It will be months before things really truly settle in! It will be by far, one of the best things you do for yourself! Best of luck!!!! :)) aka lil Hoots

Thanks for posting! I to have kept my Breast implants a dirty secret. I have no told a few close friends. I have a 17 month old son and I want to be healthy for him. I have always regretted getting them. I know I will be saggy but my health Is more important. I have a ruptured in my left breast. (Saline ) I kinda have an idea what it will look like. They will not be perfect but I'm forty an have three boys :) and I have more important things to worry about in life. I'm just worried about recovery time? I have my cousin coming for four days after the surgery. I don't know if I will be able to lift my son. My other sons are older and live out of town. My surgery is in two days I am excited to get them out and back to being natural and getting back to working out. Please if you h e any advise let me know! Thank you Daisy :)

Haha! Love your post and glad you have a 'leg man' to appreciate your gams. And what a great outlook you have! Thanks for sharing! So now, more than the surgery, I think I'm getting worried about the recovery. I need to get it through my scull that it's going to take time... not going to be overnight - boom - they are back to a soft, comfortable, pain-free state. This is surgery!!! It takes time! Like daisyandrose, I'm wondering if 4 days will be enough recovery before getting back to work/life routine (I remember being able to get back to work within a week of getting them in, then again I was 12 years younger!! Then again, I am in better shape now than 12 years ago!). "Slow and steady" I would have to think is a mantra here. Other words of wisdom is appreciated!

Thanks so much for starting your story on RealSelf! You might want to check out this great post by Green Temple about her explantation experience.

Thanks for the tip! I also found the forum post on buying bras helpful. The consensus seems to be: wait, which good to hear. And the information on the sports bras for post surgery is great help. (I'll have to look into the handful bra some more!) So much good info here - I definitely feel more education and will have a lot more questions for my ps before going into the procedure!

In full disclosure...

In full disclosure, while I'm from Portland (technically born in CA, but I don't tell many people in OR that for reasons you would understand - I moved there when I was 2 and I'm 5th generation Oregonian on my mom's side) AND I'm getting the procedure done in Portland, I am currently living back east (where they call DC, "Washington" and say "bless her heart" before ripping into someone!). All that to say, I am not living in a LA or Miami, but a place that is just as outdoorsy as Portland. And to be honest, I think it was yoga that really got me thinking about the removal more seriously. There is something about connecting to your body that made me realize, these things are really getting in the way!

And I do abide by the Oregon vibe and have felt many times that with the travel I want to do, the outdoor sports and just being comfortable hiking and camping that the "plastic" just doesn't mesh with these activities and makes me really self conscious.

So why am I doing this procedure in Portland? Well, I live in a pretty small town and I would not be comfortable going to any place near here. So why am I doing this procedure in Portland? Well, I live in a pretty small town and I would not be comfortable going to any place near here. Plus I am going back to the practice (not the doctor but the same practice) where I got the implants done. I will be staying with my parents and my mom is a recently retired nurse. I know this is probably different from a number of women's experiences who did plenty of solid research into finding the right ps. I'm not taking this lightly, but I do trust the practice (the first nurse I spoke when I was considering this looked up my record and remembered me) and I am very happy to do this at my parents' home where I can recover in peace. I will be meeting with the ps the Thursday before the procedure and will have plenty of questions for him to make sure I am comfortable going through the surgery with him. Although this is probably not typical, I think this is the right circumstances for me.
