Microneedling for Acne Scars
UPDATED FROM Mary87491

2 months later (3 sessions)
Hi all ! I know many have been asking of an update. I had my last microneedling in late May. I have had 3 so far...
I'm honestly not sure if I'm getting results or good enough results. I've included a bunch of pics in various lighting. It's hard for me to really see improvement because lighting can really make the skin look super smooth or NOT! A friend mentioned she noticed some difference, but then again we were in good lighting....
These pics were all taken today and obviously wearing makeup.
Since it's summer now and I'm out in the sun a lot, I'll hold off till September for my 4th session. As I have mentioned before I was told I need at least 4 session. my skin has been freckling easily

3rd Microneedling Session
Today I had my 3rd session and stayed at 1.0mm needle length. I asked my aesthetician to focus more of my forehead and temples, since those are the deeper wider scars. She started the session off w/facial cleansing, followed by an enzyme mask to clear my pore, which I realized I really need before doing microneedling. The last time I has a different aesthetician and she did not do an enzyme mask, which may or may not have contributed to my breakout a week after my 2nd microneedling.
(I see a small difference in my scars on forehead and temples. I also had a very new scar depression on my chin before my 2nd session and it filled in now due to the microneedling. I think new scars, especially rolling scars, respond very well to this. )
After the microneedling, she put a biocellulose restorative stem cell masque to calm my skin. This was amazing! So much of the redness & pinprick scabs went away. My face was no where nearly as red as my previous sessions. Will update my progress on scar improvement!

Didn't you do the microneedling on your 1st session as well? I'm confused..

Actually no I didn't do my chin on my 1st session because I had a acne cyst on my chin. Microneedling is best when you got a new scar... your skin is still regenerating.
Hi Mary :)! I have been following your microneedling experience and really find your info super helpful as I am Asian as well (light tan, I'd say I'm between skin type 3 and 4, NC30ish)! I am looking to have microneedling with PRP done to improve a superficially depressed line scar, from a surgical procedure.
I'm only interested in treating the scar (not the whole face) and had questions on whether you can see a textural difference between the skin that the pen passed over vs. the skin that was not touched by the pen--like your undereye area and above the lip compared to the surrounding skin that has been treated.
Can you notice an obvious textural difference between your treated and untreated skin, especially when you have foundation on? I have consulted with a couple of places, one office said they would not treat just the scar due to textural changes, and if I want this done, then I should do the whole face. I'm just trying to gauge how obvious the textural change may or may not be. I really don't want to treat the whole face as I'm worried about pigmentation changes and making my skin even more sensitive to the sun.
One doctor I consulted with recommended me to pretreat the skin with hydroquinone and retin-a to prep the skin and reduce any pigmentation/skin darkening risk before having microneedling done. Did you have to do this prior to your procedure as well?
How long did it take your skin to be completely free of any red or dark spots after the microneedling procedure? I can't really tell, but it does seem like you did have a very slight and subtle darkening of the skin in your photos while it was healing after the procedure - forgive me if I'm mistaken, but did that 100% resolve prior to your most recent session?
Also, did you notice any permanent enlarged pores or needle marks after your skin was fully healed? As you can see I'm super nervous about the potential side effects that I've seen here on RealSelf and just want to make sure I don't make my scar any worse! Thank you so much for your help and continuing to share your experience, it has been monumentally helpful and I think your skin looks phenomenal :)!

Hello - Yes, my skin had dark spots during healing, but completely back to normal by day 7.. can vary based on intensity of treatment, but I'm pretty sure you don't have to worry about permanent marks. I think the texture of my skin is the same as before any microneedling, however I do have some orange peel texture, so it was not perfectly smooth either way. I do have to say I've barely been out in the sun and noticed I am freckling really easily. It could also be due to some retinol cream I use recently. Either way, I'm not going to do my fourth session until summer is over.
Hope that helps! Good luck with your treatment if you do go forth.

Thanks for the info :)! I actually had my first session over a week ago and she used 1mm on me. I ended up getting what looked like a rash afterwards, I'm not sure if it was from the topical numbing cream or the hyaluronic acid she put on me during the procedure :(. She gave me some hyalutonic serum to apply in the days to follow, which I used but I looked at the ingredient list and it was high dimethecone. I'm not sure if this is what my skin reacted to but even today I have small, tiny raised bumps over the area she microneedled :(. Not sure what to do st this point but to wait until my skin can tolerate either some retinol or hydrocortisone. Did you ever have this type of reaction after? All I have been using is the Neutrogena hydroboost hyaluronic serum she gave me to use and Cerave hydrating cleanser (also given to me to use). Not sure what my skin is reacting to but now I'm wary of trying a second treatment. The scar is improved in some spots but the deepest part where it's strophic looks a bit deeper to me but I can't really tell. Did your scars look deeper at first and then improved? Thanks :)!
Also, did your esthetician glidr the pen over your skin over the same area multiple times or did she only pass the area once? I have a line scar and the way my esthetician did it is glide down the scar up and down like 3-4 times and she considered that "one pass". I'm not sure if she was overly aggressive with me but I did bleed a lot and she did leave a red mark (almost like a small spatter of blood under the skin that didn't go away until day 6). She wanted to do 2mm at first but I was concerned that was way too aggressive for my first time. I'm not sure if I like her style of microneedling or not...can you give me a bit more info about how your procedure normally goes? Thanks!
did the mico needling cause the orange peel texture?
Thanks for the update. Looks like the microneedling did not help with the texture. I was thinking of microneedling to fix my texture from laser damage but now I am not so sure if it will help.
Awesome! I love Mac makeup
Hi Mary - How are you? Please update!!
I got my microneedling with eclipse pen and PRP done today!!!
I just updated! How was your experience?
What does your skin look like now? Would you recommend microneedling for asian skin?

8 weeks later...
Hi Everyone! I know many of you have asked for an update... so here goes.
My scars are not gone, some scars are improved and a little filled in, but still very much there. I dont see dramatic changes, but I'm content with the small changes I see so far... 3 times is the minimum recommended amount of treatments for acne scars. Unfortunately I had a really bad cystic pimple on my forehead a couple weeks after my last treatment and it left a new or deeper scar my forehead. Hopefully that fills up with my next treatment.

Thanks for the update. Hope you continue to see more improvements. How is your orange peel texture? Any changes with that?
I didn't do anything for orange peel texture/ I'm not sure microneedling is the best to address orange peel texture. Personally, I'm more concerned with my rolling and boxcar scars. But I will see after I do more treatments.
I have the same problem with a larger scar on my forehead due to a large cystic pimple. Do you think the scar on your forehead is the worst? It's hard to tell. Do you think you will need a more aggressive treatment for the deeper scars? How are you doing now? Thanks for the update.
The ones on my forehead bother me the most because it's right in the center of my face & it's bigger/deeper than the ones on my cheek. I also have it on my temples, but since it's on the side it doesn't annoy me as much... I think I don't need to be more aggressive... just probably at least two more treatments. Like I said before, I had two treatments so far and the old scars look a little less deep... maybe 30% improvement? But it didn't do anything for my orange peel texture/some ice picks. Also I don't have unrealistic expectations... I just want it to be less deep. I don't believe there's anything out there to make your skin perfectly smooth....
I will update again once I get my 3rd treatment.

Thanks for the update. I've done two subcisions on my deeper forehead scar and I've seen improvement but the forehead one still bothers me. I'm thinking about proceeding with mirconeedling or Infini. Did you have prp with the mirconeedling?
Can you please tell me more about your subcision? I was always curious about that.
My microneedling was done w/pro cell stem cell serum not prp.
