I sit here with sadness that I, like others have...
WORTH IT$9,000
I sit here with sadness that I, like others have poisoned my own body with breast implant toxins. I am 41 & had a routine mammogram 1 week ago and discovered that my right silicone implant had ruptured. I have had my implants (under muscle)for about 4 years and have had no trauma that could have "caused" the rupture. I started having major health/Fibro type symptoms about 2 years ago (promptly was put on Lyrica to manage). Helped for a while, but then realized I was still progressing in the wrong direction so last winter I went to see a Fybromyalgia specialist in Charlotte. They did a bunch of tests including the tilt table test and diagnosed me with clinical Fybromyalgia and postural orthostatic syndrome (sudden blood pressure drop upon standing). I also learned that I have two mutations in my MTHFR gene(don't methylate well). I thought I was finally in the right hands- they put me on a number of supplements including my injections of the methylcobalamin to help with my usability of B12. I definitely improved, I could function at 70% at least but I still wasn't well and their 'blanket' treatment seemed to be short lived.
I turned to the Duke Center For Living and saw a Fybro specialist who recommended doing a food sensitivity test (along with consulting from their nutritionist). He felt like trying to calm the bodies response would help me. I have always been a 'healthy' food eater (mostly whole organic foods, but my food weakness is sugar). I have been gluten free for years and now following the strict guidelines for this MRT Food Sensitivity Test since April. I thought it was helpful, but still am having many symptoms. They include vision worsening(could be my age), inflamed tendon in foot, head fullness sore glands, breast tenderness, irregular periods, heat sensation in feet, weight gain, slight speech slur when reading books aloud, not healing from shoulder surgery, sun sensitivity(rash), tinnitus, muscle weakness/fatigue easily, muscle and joint soreness with some real tender points, muscle recovery issues, core instability (like my ribs pull out of alignment easily and then have huge inflammation/pain until adjusted and flare goes down, some days non-existent energy(can go suddenly), loss of sense of smell and a whole host of nerve like issues- extreme cold sensations in feet and hands causing pain(sometimes outer side of arms), random nerve web like pain, tingling sensations, internal leg flutters, tight neck muscles/headachy, stiff forearms, poor fine motor skills, and of coarse mental fog. —
Now mind you I do not have all of these symptoms daily and the amount and duration is better than it was a year ago. With the new Fybro doctor and nutritionist I was able to wean myself off of the Lyrica.
Now knowing I have a rupture all of these mysterious symptoms are making sense. I just hope it's not to late to remove the implants and cleanse my body so that I may have a chance to be symptom free.
I had my surgery with Dr. Kolb on yesterday. I am a day post op and feeling as good as I would have hoped! I am sore and swollen, but have only had to take Tylenol to manage the pain. The surgery was 3 hours and she had to remove a few lymph nodes on each side as well. My implants were sub muscular. Now for the healing & detox! Thank you Dr. Kolb and staff for caring for me so well!

5 days post
3 days PICS post silicone explant: 7 lymph nodes & ruptured Right
Today is 5 days post op & feeling as good as I think I should! Health symptoms seemed to be going crazy post surgery, but with each day I feel my body healing a bit more. I am back on my pre surgery supplements and finished my antibiotics & looking forward to the detox ahead. No regrets!

hi I hope you are feeling better soon. Please keep us posted if your symptoms have gone. Worried that my implants are causing some of my health problems.

1 week post pic(then info from 9 days post-op)
It seems that many women do not have silicone affected lymph nodes- I had 7 total that were removed. My main "complaints" are because of that part, but I am so glad my doctor removed them now(once clogged w/silicone your body starts trying to enclose them and can cause more future problems). But my recovery has been a bit challenging at times(big sore lumps under each armpit now). So for all the ladies who do have lymph nodes taken out know that your recovery might be a bit different then just a capsulectomy. I got up today though and I think I have turned the corner of this recovery. I don't feel spunky mind you, but I do feel like I am moving in the right direction. I never had to take the prescribed pain meds after surgery, but I got sick (a virus)& an unscheduled period after surgery, plus a lot of symptoms. I have felt real beat down, but today feels a bit better :) Am now back on all of my pre surgery supplements, plus a few that Dr. Kolb wanted me on... Oh and I have lost 7 pounds! I'm sure some is water weight and maybe a couple for my boobs, but ironically for months prior I was trying to shed a couple pounds and even though I was on a food sensitivity diet and for sure burning more calories than taking in I could not change my weight(or how I felt 'big'-scale numbers don't matter to me). I just find it strange that 9 days post op I have already had a weight change- now to DETOX and BUILD SOME MUSCLE BACK!!

You look great!!! Im debating lift or no lift. Are you happy you went with the lift? I hooe you are feeling better!!!

Hi Piper54,
I should have clarified that I did a lift when I had the initial implants. For my explant surgery I opted just for removal and am glad I chose that. I know I could always go back in for a lift, but wanted them to have their own chance to 'bounce back'. Likely I will have some clear differences in the appearance of my L breast to my R, but I think I am ok with them... My strongest desire is to have my health back so I can be the mom and wife I want to be :)

So glad to hear of your improvement. Your perspective on the additional healing & issues with the gland removal is positive. Keep it up :]

Thank you :) I think that additional invasion for removal of the lymphs was not received well by my body, but in the bigger picture I know my body will thank me for opting to get all of that toxic stuff out!! Appreciate the positive kind words Healthierme :)

I am looking for a dr for explant - did you really pay $9000 for removal? That seems extremely high based on others who have had the procedure.

Hi Sunshine1940! You can have implants removed w/local for really inexpensive and I'd say with out the lymph nodes it would have been 6-7k but Yeah I really did- The implant complete capsulectomy surgery is 3 hours and the lymph node removal is another 1 1/2 so for all this with the facility charge, the anesthesia, Dr charges, pathology, and tests that was my grand total. I believe 100% that I am paying a premium for a surgeon who does THIS PROCEDURE routinely. I wanted someone who has done it so many that she would notice the uncommon- most doctors do not remove the lymph nodes, yet they know that they are affected with silicone. At the least this will cause problems once the body starts trying to encapsulate them(and have to be removed then) and the worse is that it will eventually lead to cancer. For me, with the warranty(Allergan pays 3,500) I could have gone back to my original ps and had them removed with no out of pocket expense- and I adored my ps, I think he did a great job. I was told by his office that he rarely does the removals (because everyone is so happy) but he is a highly skilled surgeon. Again I have no doubts about his skills, but I would rather go to someone who can do the surgery in their sleep than someone who will do it, but rarely does it.... I am very hyper about my body and have been so ill for so long that this felt right for me... I scraped pennies to go lol but I honestly wanted to know that I have done everything in my power to feel better :)

Wow, thank you for such a detailed explanation. My PS is nice enough, but after 2 surgeries, they still are not right. He said I could come in and he'd fix them for $1500. He said that last time - yet here I am needing a third. So, I find myself wanting them out. I don't like anything about them, and I feel like I spend more time worrying about them now then I did without them! I def want someone experienced in explant, and I want to everything out. I've heard most surgeons leave capsule in and I don't like that thought. My only concern is how far she is from me. Ugh. Happy healing, and thank you for sharing your story!

Thank you for sharing your story. I debated on implants when I had my tummy tuck but after reading stories like yours I decided to be happy with my post pregnancy imperfect breasts. It could be worse and at least they are not making me sick. Wishing you a healthy future!

Glad you have found some direction with your health and have a great doctor- makes a world of difference in healing! Learning of the mutation and getting on the methylated B was huge start for me. I will certainly keep updates here as I continue along my journey. I will say after this surgery I did expect that I would have a stir up of symptoms and indeed I do... Icy sensations, feeling very light headed and in general lost- huge brain fog, ringing in ears is loud, I have the general pain/soreness from the surgery, but I have not had to do any narcotics, my body is very misaligned and I can't wait until I can be adjusted! I'm being very understanding with myself because I knew undergoing a surgery now would be tough. I truly am hopeful by taking this first couple weeks and just focus on healing by two weeks post op when I see my nutritionist I can hit the detox hard. I have a huge renewed sense of hope and can't wait until the "next step" in this recovery. Thank you for your prayers, I will keep you in mine as well.
