I've had to wait for an entire year for my breasts...

I've had to wait for an entire year for my breasts to be replaced. I did a lot a research and praying and was lead to Dr. Theresa Wang and Dr. Sam Shih. I've been nothing but pleased from start to finish. Their office staff (Christy and Daisy) are just as awesome as are they. When I explained that I wanted to be reconstructed before my sister's wedding, Dr. Wang and Dr. Shih said I would be cutting it really close with an end of May surgery date. However, they found me a data at Kennestone for May 11th. The day of surgery, I had a great team in surgery which took 13 hrs over all. Apparently, I decided I was Sade with a touch of Beyonce after I work up in the recovery room. After I got to my room, I because alert enough to take a look. I had breasts again!!!! OMG!!! And they are awesome!!! I'm crying now as I write this because I'm so happy.
Let me explain my journey. When I found out I had breast cancer and that it was aggressive, there was no hesitation that I would remove my breasts. However at that time I had Kaiser, and the surgeon I went to was pretty adamant that I would be happier with implants. I didn't want implants because I knew my body created scar tissue and the chance of me rejecting or encapsulating the implant was high. He then tried to convince me to get the Lattisimus dorsi flap or the Pedicled Tram Flap. Neither of which I wanted because they both involved the removal of critical muscles that a mother of a 3 year old needs. When I explained that I wanted the DIEP, he told me that I only had enough fat for a B cup which was smaller than I wanted. I was a J cup after kids and DDD before. I wanted a C or D, preferably a D because of my body style. I knew that he wasn't the surgeon for me, but he was all my insurance would approve. He then refused to do the immediate reconstruction on the day of surgery, so I woke up feeling less than whole.
But God knows what he was doing and several months after chemo and radiation (that I had no idea I was going to need, I started a new job that gave me new insurance with Blue Cross Blue Shield. I had an HMO plan and the same plastic surgeon was in network. But I prayed and went to a consultation with Dr. Wang and Dr. Shih. They examined me and said despite my previous abdominal surgery, I could get the DIEP and I had enough stomach fat for a D cup!!! HOORAY!!!! AMEN!!!!! I couldn't believe it and on top of it, they told me they could get me approved through my insurance. I had no doubts that this would go through because I knew that the Father had his hands all over this.
About 2 weeks later, I got a call from Christy saying that had a date for me on May 11th. Wow, that was quick. Fast forward to my hospital room and my new tatas! When I finally got a look at them, I couldn't believe how beautiful the sutures were. Then Dr. Shih came in and told me how Dr. Wang had to do a lot of work because I had large amounts of scar tissue. He said most surgeons would have closed me right back up but she didn't. She worked her way through everything and together they created some amazing breasts that drop perfectly! I don't have nipples yet because I want 3D tattoos done by the Myers team. I'm not surprised that she worked through it, because I prayed over every person in that operating room and over all instruments they used.
For me to have not one complaint about anything is another miracle. I've never stayed in a hospital and not had a complaint about some level of my care. Being doctor's kid, I can usually find something that wasn't done right. Kennestone Hospital (50 miles from my home) was the most beautiful hospital. Their staff was soooo amazing on every level. Not one person I came in contact with was anything but kind, happy, personable and efficient. They kept my pain to a minimum all while making me smile. Even the food was good! I wish this hospital was close to my home. I love the staff at Kennestone!
I'm so very happy and blessed to have found them. Thank you Father for healing me and putting me with the right medical staff at each level of my healing.
Please feel free to ask me any questions you like. I will answer anything and I hope to help anyone going through what I am.

I too am a DIEP sister you are doing great. Don't lift your kiddos. And try not to over do it. It took me a year too to get my new girl too. I only had one to replace. I also used the Brava and 2 fat graftings to get my size back. And 2 mastopexys on the healthy side. See my picture . Use silicone or paper tape over your scars as soon as your PS gives you the ok it worked great and I used Esential oils and vitamin e. Glad you found the micro vascular plastic surgeon. Blessings on your healing.

I'm getting ready for my consultation. I too have had to wait because of radiation. Did you have to do expanders first? I understand that the DIEP is best after radiation. I think I've read too much because now I'm confused.

No expanders, I did use a External vacuum called a Brava but I'm not sure it is still avalable. I did not have radiation or chemo because I did an alternative cancer treatment called the Gerson Therapy. Juice, supplametation, detoxification, . I waited because my Oncologist recommended that i wait for my skin to flatten out on my chest. I was scared before I did my DIEP but it was all worth it to me to have natural reconstruction. I worked so hard to be free of cancer from a stage 2 Breast cancer without poisoning. YOU will need help afterword. For 3 weeks. and you will gradually get stronger. I'm 54 work with a trainer and did yoga to regain my straingth. You start out with a walker and hunched over but I loved the flatter tummy and belly boob. Eventually with time it all heals. It's been 2 years and I had 2 Brava expansion along with 2 fat graftings. I went slow. In January 2017 going to finish with the skate nipple technique and the ariola will be a skin graft from my thigh . I have a great Plastic surgeon, Its all my own skin. Eat organic, drink clean water, exercise and recover. God bless you on your reconstruction to look whole again.

I live in Canada and have waited 18 months for my DIEP. It is free for breast cancer patients. Thanks for your story.

So glad things worked out so well. How long before you were comfortable getting out and about? I would like to let my husband know how long he will have to look after me! Did you have home care to help with your drains? Were you in much pain after your release from hospital? Think its 5 days in hospital here, two days if which are spent in a 'sauna room,' which sound like the worst part. Oh, yes. Did you manage in your own bed once you were home? My husband wants to rent a hospital bed but I did not need it when I had a hip replacement, so I can't see that I would in this case.

So I had my surgery on a Wed and went home on Sat. I'm still having some pain and discomfort but it is getting better. Too be honest, I still can't drive and I'm 3 weeks out today. Thank goodness we purchased an adjustable bed 7 months ago because it really helped me with getting in and out of bed. Some people use pillows to prop themselves up into a sitting position and to keep the legs bent. I can't imagine not having had my bed. I've been able to walk and I'm not as hunched over as I thought I would be. However, the stomach area for me is extremely tender painful. I don't have a great range of motion yet either. I would say you'll need help for at least 3 weeks with stuff around the house. I went to the nail shop yesterday and that was nice! So I'm starting to do normal things. I am trying to return to work on Monday. But I think I'll still have drains so we'll see.

Thanks. I am now four weeks out and have a couple of issues. First, First patch of skin died under one breast and I get a skin graft from my hip later this week. Second, I have a burning pain above my pubic area and major swelling under my belly button. I felt I was doing much better in the first few weeks. Hope you are recovering well.

I am 5 mths post op DIEP flap..right side... N 3 mths reduction on left side to make breasts match...will have my tattoo in June or July but was told this will be out of pocket as insurance does not cover...which i disagreed with. Matters not now as i no longer have insurance. Having my new breasts is very freeing!! I can wear different tops that i was unable to before! No more carrying around that heavy prosthesis n being embarrassed changing clothes around my girlfriends etc.
Happy for you n your successful surgery!! Gives you new lease on life!!

For me the pain is not in the breasts, but in my abdomen. I do have some pain in the breasts but that is not so bad. Unfortunately, my tolerance to pain is no longer the same after chemo. I refused to do a prosthesis because I just didn't want to be bothered. I'm so glad to have me back even if I'm not quite done yet.

Cost Explanation
ochiatlMay 22, 2016
This the total bill: hospital, surgeons, anesthesiologist, medicine, operating room, etc.,. This is what was billed to my insurance. So please don't see this cost and think they are too expensive. What they bill and is actually settled is something way different.

Wow! Exactly. How long did it take for the swelling to go down? Also, did you have to go back for clean up surgery/lipo? I have to get the dog ears removed as well as some smoothing lipo.

I'm adding a few more pics of the sutures. I use hibi cleanse daily as I shower, but only in the areas where there are sutures.

Good for you .I did a single DIEP in 2014, my progress is on my posts myheromademeover with Dr. D. Miles
I used the Brava unit and fat grafting 2 times to get the size I needed to match my good breast. It is a prosess of healing. Hang in there.

Wow, what a great testimony, thank you for sharing it here with us!
When are you scheduled to have your tattooing done? Can't wait to see your results! I'm not sure I've ever seen 3-D tattooing done on breast cancer patients. FYI, you can post your updates via our app if you have an iphone - just download it here post away!
