Hey everyone my name is Mari, and I have finally decided to get weight loss help. I will be 32 in October of this year, and have struggled with my weight since I was about 11 years old. I am currently around 290 lbs and 5'5. I have tried every single weight loss program you can possibly think of. L.A. Weight loss, Hollywood liquid diet, Nutrisystem, Phentermine, Chinese green tea diet pills, Xenadrine, Hydroxycut, Exercise, Starving my self... You name it I've tried it. My mindset has always been that I can do it by myself with hard work and dedication. Yes I have lost weight with all of the above named programs, but one small slip up and I'm back to square one. I've gotten a lot of different reactions to my decision of having the surgery. Some people have told me that it's a great decision, as others have told me that I'm being lazy and taking the easy way out. My mind is set though regardless of peoples opinions. My only concern is all the lose skin after. I have read so many stories of people felling worst afterwards with the sagging skin. My insurance doesn't cover cosmetics. In any case it needs to be done, I can worry about that later. So that's it in a nutshell. I have the initial seminar Thursday August 27th. I'm extremely excited about it. I hope this process is easy and doesn't take so long. Thank you all for reading. Any advice, comments, or stories will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Maria, I started my weight loss journey in June of this year. I am going the process to have the gastric sleeve. I have done my psych eval, EKG, met with the nutritionist and I have had my 1st supervised weight loss consultation (my insurance require 6 months supervised weight plan). Everything is going well....when I started the process I weight 226 lbs.; I am now down to 217 lbs. I was kind of surprise when my nutritionist told me not to lose any more weight....for the next 5 months she want me to maintain my weight where it is now. This is kind of scary, hopefully I will be able to do it. I am scheduled for my stress test and the sleep study in the coming weeks. I am moving right along in the process....not rushing time because I know this will be my last summer as a big girl. I am definitely looking forward to watching this lifelong transformation my body will go through....the gastric sleeve is the tool I need to help me get my life back....just thinking about what is yet to come make me happy....good luck in your journey.....keep in touch and I will do the same....

Hi Mari! Our stories are very similar (except I'm 20 years your senior. But let's not dwell on that...!!). I too have been through every diet out there, and they've all been successful. I've lost weight on all. But have never been able to maintain. All the weight has always crept back on - and then some. I truly believe this surgery will be the tool to help me lose AND keep it off. That, and the therapy I think I need post-op, to get to the root of my self-destructive eating ways. I think you are SO wise to do this. I just wish I had done this 20 years ago.... Good luck, and please keep us posted!

Hey all... Jut wanted to let u guys know that I went to the initial seminar. They spoke about the different options in surgery, as well as insurance requirements. The Dr. Spoke and I got a good vibe from him which is very important. His staff was there as well to answer questions. I found out that my insurance doesn't require a supervised diet plan before the surgery which is great!!! They are now scheduling for October so they told me that if I take all my paperwork for my first consult that they can schedule me for then!!!! Im super excited!!! I'll keep u guys posted!

Hey everyone, well here it is almost a year later and I have yet to do the surgery. Truth is I kind of backed out of it a little. I got scared, thinking about my daughter and what if something would happen to me. I decided to be a "Happy Big Girl" that didn't work out. I could lie to everyone, but I couldn't continue to lie to myself. I am unhappy, depressed, angry, and sad. So once again I got to thinking about my daughter. This time though, thinking of what would happen to me if I DIDN'T do the surgery. So I went to my initial meeting with Dr. Sosa in Hialeah, Fl. Met with him April 10th 2015. I had my heart set on the Gastric sleeve, but after meeting me he said that with a BMI of 48 a sleeve was not the best choice for me. So since he is the doctor (the best in Florida) I agreed to the RNY. Then I met with his coordinator Betty! What an awesome person!!! She has been there for me every step of the way, very patient with all my questions or concerns. She really is the best there, she knows her job. So, I have already seen the Nutritionist, the Psychiatrist, and my PCP. Gotten my clearance from all 3! Yay!!!!!! Betty submitted all my paperwork to the insurance and I am just waiting for the response from the insurance this week! Im so excited and soooo nervous!!! I will keep you all posted!

Hi!! I'm so excited to be reading your journey...could they say way the sleeve wasn't the best option for you..my bmi is a 46..and my heart is set on the sleeve...

Hi anitramathis thanks for replying and reading my journey! It really depends on the Doctor. Mine just refused the sleeve for me because he says that with a BMI over 40 (mine is 48) I wouldn't get the best results. With the sleeve you can eat certain things that with the Bypass you just cant! Like sugars and sweets. I really had my heart set on the sleeve too, but he's the doctor so I'll go with what he says. I want to have the best possible results so Im all in. How far into your journey are you?

Oh wow...that is my downfall...sugar ...and more sugar..especially if its in chocolate lol...now this makes me rethink the sleeve...I really want to only do this once, and do it right the first time...I'm 8 months in...just found out now they don't require the 6 months of dieting..I was pissed!! I lost 20 pounds...once they told me that...I gained it Righttttttt back...my old primary was so mad at me..like Anitra you did this on purpose... yeah I did..but now I'm back serious about losing this weight..

Wow well hey keep it moving forward! Yeah with the sleeve u are free to eat all the food I normally would, with the bypass ur very restricted
May 28, 2015
Hope you can go through with the surgery...the comments on this site have helped me get through the process...Surgery is May 29th, it's 1am on the 28th...getting really close...

Good luck redhat!!! How did it go?

It went pretty well...it took me an extra day before I was able to drink...only ice chips...but once I was able to drink I got those 30 ounces of fluid down as quick as I could...unsweetened Popsicles counted for two ounces each...a double for four...however, when I got home I was extremely weak, painfully weak...that passed as well...I received a B12 shot to try to help me along...I'm 8 days post-surgery and feel much better...I'll weigh myself on Monday...
