Panniculectomy...best Decision Ever!

I have researched the panniculectomy procedure for years and haven’t come across a case similar to mine so I decided to post about my journey. I am currently 39 and have had 2 children via c-section. After the second pregnancy I developed a huge pannus that I could not do anything about, even with exercise and 37 pound weight loss. The pannus was impeding my movement and ability to maintain an exercise program, just simply walking would cause my hip to become disjointed which has resulted in arthritis. I really needed help!
I spoke with my PCP in November of 2018 who recommended I consult with a plastic surgeon, which I did a few weeks later. Dr. Newbrough was extremely nice and understanding of my issues. He was very confident that he could remove the pannus and I could be more comfortable. He did stress to me that due to this procedure dealing with a large amount of fat tissue and that the area is under a lot of stress there is a 50/50 chance of complications following surgery. This freaked me out! We decided that he would go ahead and request an insurance authorization while I thought it over. We would meet again in four weeks.
During those four weeks I returned to the internet only to find a plethora of people who had the panniculectomy after major weight loss or full tummy tucks with liposuction...this was not me so it was difficult to compare their outcomes and complications with what I was facing. After numerous discussions with my husband and close friend I decided to have the procedure as it was causing me medical problems. My insurance approved the procedure and I had it done on 1/2/19.
The procedure went very well and Dr. Newbrough and his two PA’s have the best bedside manner. They removed just over ten pounds from my lower abdomen. Immediately following surgery my hip pain was gone! I was very swollen for 4-6 weeks following surgery with minor bruising. The pain, to me, was very tolerable. I did wear a binder for 6 weeks then transitioned to a training binder for 4 weeks then transitioned to Spanx for another 4 weeks. I had two drains that were placed in my upper pelvic area for just over 2 weeks. I have read that some have had issues with the drains but I did not find them uncomfortable, just a minor annoyance when trying to find something to wear. I had also read numerous complaints about what is called “dog ears”, fortunately Dr. Newbrough’s technique did not allow that to occur my scar is virtually straight and smooth as well. I am 3 months post op now and only have minor swelling just below my navel (which is very low now), otherwise everything is back to normal. I have started a walking routine and will be back in the gym soon as well. If you are in a similar position to mine I would suggest you have this procedure, I have been given my mobility back.
