I was 33 years old when I got my smooth saline implants over the muscle. I went from a 38AA to a full 38C. I never had a problem until two years ago when I developed a cc on the right side. My ps told me point blank that without implant replacements, I would be concave and wrinkled due to my age, thin skin and the fact that I had very little breast tissue. He assured me I wouldn't like the results and he was clear that replacing the implants was the best solution esthetically.

After reading the Real Self Testimonies for months, I knew I wouldn't get implants again. Your personal accounts helped me realize that there was a chance that problems could crop up with new implants and I didn't want to have anymore surgeries. You all said that you didn't regret your explantations and nearly all of you were happy to be natural again. So I went forward hoping for the best but expecting the worst.

I scheduled my surgery for the removal of both capsules and implants for February 28, 2014. My procedure was done under general anesthesia and it took about 1.5hrs. I don't remember anything about the surgery except waking up after it was over. Unlike most of you, I wasn't wrapped snuggly in anything, and was sent home in the shirt I came in with the drain collection bags clipped to it. My right breast filled with fluid more than the left due to the scar tissue removal from the cc. Though the drains were annoying to deal with (dressing around them and tracking the fluid output), my biggest inconvenience was having to sleep on my back until they were removed. The drains were in for 6 days. My ps removed them (it was painless) and told me I could resume my elliptical exercise, just don't use my arms for a couple of weeks. He said he didn't need me to come back and to call if I had any problems. I haven't had any problems. I'm blessed with a husband who is totally supportive. He helped me through every phase of the surgery and homecare after.

As you can see by the pictures, I'm definitely not "esthetically perfect", but I'm not the monster that the ps was predicting either. I can breathe deeply for the first time in 27 years and I can lay on my stomach comfortably again. I hope my golf swing will improve since I don't have to reach around a protruding, unyielding chest and I'm looking forward to wearing smaller tops and bras. I'm happy with my results and so is my husband.

I owe a great debt to all of you for your selflessness in sharing your stories and pictures. I have a huge respect for you younger ladies who are making the "no more implants" decision in your 20's, 30's and 40's. I wish I had done it sooner. I know there are alot of us older women out there too. It was because of you, that I made my decision to explant without replacements. Thank you so much for sharing your journeys. My hope is that my story will help someone who is struggling with similar circumstances. Stand firm and know what it is you want not only from the surgery, but also from your life going forward. Our health and well-being is worth so much more than our breast size. Good luck to all.

So happy you have it over with no complications. I am 56 with 32 year old silicone and am going for my 2nd consult tomorrow. Best wishes to you!

I want to thank you, and ALL the ladies who have shared on these message boards. I was so comforted before my surgery by your words and advice. I don't think I would have done so well without all of you! I had my implants/capsular contracture removed last Tues, 3/14. I am 53, formerly athletic, but as ('Oxford') said, I was greatly inhibited as they grew tighter and began even pushing on nerves. I too am a 'belly sleeper' and have lived the last 4 years or so in hell not being able to sleep. As I had very small ('A cup,' on a good day) natural breasts and my implants were 'full C cups,' I have very little tissue left. My left breast seems to be doing best, laying nicely (except for expected sagging) but the right one is a little scary. I can clearly see the 'pocket' and the breast bone feels 'exposed' a bit and is tender and sore. My right nipple is collapsed a bit and collapse of the tissue inward. I read many post surgical articles saying it will begin to 'contract' and 'correct itself' as time goes on. (Especially as I become active and can work my upper chest muscles... I want to become a 'Zumba' instructor this year! ) But as I said, I am concerned. I still have my drains and no post op appt until the 31st. My surgeon says she wants to make sure I have allowable time to heal, given my age and the depth of damage created and tissue removed with the horrible encapsulations. I am caring for myself alone, and I recommend if anyone is worried about being alone after surgery you take measures of preparation. I moved everything I would need for a week or so down to 'arms length' so I would not have to lift my arms above my head. I made a bed on the sofa near the tv, kitchen, bathroom and would not have to go upstairs. I made an ingenious way to shower by using a trash bag, twisted up as a belt to pin my drains on. I thought the pain and experience would be so much worse, but it's been ok. Just keep on keepin' on... looking forward, again as ('Oxford') said, to wearing smaller cute tops, I bought a couple of nice 'push up' bras and will consider having a lift in a year, after I am fully healed, depending on how I feel I look. AH, FREEDOM!!! Good luck, Ladies!

By the way, my implants were saline, nearly 20 years old, second set (1st set were silicone and had ruptured!) and they were placed under my (poor, strained) muscles. The pain of post surg is MUCH less than the pain of the hardening of the implants! ;)

It looks like you have your recovery fully covered. You're very resourceful and I wish you the best. I was wondering how much fluid you were draining at this point (10 days). Good Luck with your Zumba career. I've never tried it, but would love to sometime.

@'patticakes' (lol!) I am draining about 2-2.5 ozs both yesterday and today. I think my surgeon was very wise not to remove the drains for almost two weeks. I have read horror stories of women who get them out too early and develop hemotomas, infections, and other complications including distortions from fluids. (It has been 6 days, tomorrow is one week... post op appt is 3/31, which will be 13 days after surgery.)

ittybittybecky - I agree with you about the drains. After removal, I didn't have fluid build up. I never really had a lot of fluid after the first 3 days, but I think your drainage is more the norm. My doctor originally told me 2 weeks and I think that is probably the average. Keep healing and take it easy! :)

I think the drainage amount has a lot to do with the size ratio of my 'natural self' to my implant size... seems like a LOT of space there trying to heal, collecting fluid. The fluid is mostly clear and slowing down. But yeah, hope it stops at least before drain removal on the 31st! Thank you SO much for your support. ***Most of you girls are HILARIOUS, btw!!!*** ;-)

Ok, I guess we'll know for sure in two weeks, as it has been only one week today (surgery was late afternoon.) They did move my post op appt up to this Thurs 3/27, (which is my birthday, of course, lol)

What a great birthday present maybe getting your drains out. :) I wish you all the best!!
