2017 Lefort 1 (3-piece fracture) to correct Open Bite Results in Upper Jaw Slant/Cant - Botched Jaw Surgery
ORIGINAL POST
Not Sure if Worth It
I am a private person but think the only way I will get help is if I share my experience.
I am a 41 yo female in South Florida. I had a Class III open bite and was having issues with function that braces could not correct alone. I underwent 3-piece lefort 1 osteotomy June of 2017 of my upper jaw. I was nervous but felt ready to finally get this issue resolved. Recovery was somewhat as expected and I was just looking forward to being out of braces. I had an unexpected cant which surgeon said could be corrected with orthodontics. I noticed as I was healing I had climate sensitivity and constant pressure in the area of my anterior since surgery but was told it would go away with time. I later saw another surgeon to get a second opinion but seemed reluctant to help me/get involved and did not even take any kind of xrays. In February, my surgeon agreed to remove the left anterior plate which did help a little but I still have same issue. I recently developed an abcess on the right anterior area of my upper jaw where the right fracture was between tooth #5 & #6 to which my periodontist went in and said I had been missing bone between there and since he put in bone, the climate sensitivity and preasure on upper right went away. The periodontist said it was odd and he only saw where there was no bone going all the way up in cases of people with osteoperosis which I do not have. While it was healing, I predominately have been eating on the left and 2 weeks into the right side healing, while biting into a chicken tender I felt movement and a prick in my inner ear on the left. I later experienced same thing while eating again...this was 7/12/18. I made another appointment with jaw surgeon who took xrays and says nothing was showing and going in would be over-treating. He also mentioned it could possibly be a nonunion but to give it 3 weeks and put me on augmentin. I am kind of at a lost because I AM experiencing constant unrelenting discomforting pressure and climate sensitivity in cold areas on left still which includes where I work...which is kept very cold. I would not be on here if I were not experiencing these issues and hope someone can help me.

I have since had the bone filed down that was protruding up into nose area and happy to report the pressure and discomfort is now very minimal. I no longer regret surgery.
I am now hoping the orthododontics can correct the slant/cant I have in my upper jaw as a result of surgery.

After 6 months you will start to feel almost normal again, it takes long time for the swelling to go completely and to muscle to settle down in their new position, your teeth and bite could look wired for the fist months.. I wish it all will turn OK, and the results will be good,

Appreciate your info but your comment is irrelevant to my post Blossom 31. My lefort jaw surgery was 6/7/17

Has anyone ever heard of or know someone that had a slanted upper jaw resulting from lefort 1 surgery corrected with just orthodontics? I am doing research and cannot seem to find this information online.

From my own experience I don’t think slanted jaw can be corrected without surgery. I had to go under jaw surgery for the second time to correct my slanted upper and lower jaw. My upper jaw was slanted from the beginning, but my lower jaw and chin got slanted by my own surgeon hand at my first surgery.. he ruined my face and my life.. So after 7 years I decided to redone the surgery and fix my face. I wish I could help you more.

That is what I keep being told. I had my hopes up that orthodontics would do it initially. My slant is very obvious...I just had my recurring cleaning with hygenist 11/2/18 who also commented on the slant/cant. If orthodontics don't work, looks like I will have to revisit surgery option with an experienced surgeon.

How did you go about finding a good surgeon for second surgery? I am leery of reviews after my first and only major surgery results have left me like this. And bad part was, this surgeon was out of network but I really believed he was the better option back then.

Requested pictures
These 2 pictures show the contrast of my face from pre and post surgery. I have alot of others I believe are on my old Samsung device. I really did not even consider a cant when undergoing my procedure and do hope this helps others looking to have lefort 1.
