Mohs Surgery for Basal Cell Carcinoma on Forehead

ORIGINAL POST

Went to the dermatologist to get my yearly check....

Went to the dermatologist to get my yearly check. A red spot on my forehead that had been there for quite some time, was biopsied on Tuesday. The spot would heal up, then return and bleed sometimes during face cleaning. Actually thought it was just an area of thin skin. So when I got a call at work 2 days later, telling me that little red spot was basal cell carcinoma, I immediately started crying, and couldn’t comprehend what was happening. My mom was my age when she was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, and she had a scar on her forehead from one of the removals. So I was terrified that this was happening! Options presented to me were cutting it out, or cutting it out. Explained the difference between the Mohs Surgery and Surgical removal from a plastic surgeon. Opted and scheduled for Mohs with the best doctor in town, who had a cancellation the following Tuesday. Then the depression and feeling sorry for myself settled in.... only good part was that I only had a few days to worry about procedure. On Saturday, I made myself go out shopping to get my mind off things. While shopping, looking at a display of mirrors, one fell off rack, and broke my toe! I didn’t even report it to the store, being in my weird state of mind. Went to my car and cried, just too much! Tuesday came, 12:45 procedure time, I limped into the surgical room, put on my gown, laid down, toe throbbing, and the tears started flowing..... Nurse held my hand and covered me with a soft blanket. Doctor came in and said he was told I was crying, he was sooo sweet and kind, and told me I was beautiful, and he would make sure my scar was perfect. Numbed area and so gentle that the first layer was removed and I didn’t feel anything. He came back into room and said he got the root, but needed a little more on one side. Renumbed and took second pass, which turned out to be “ he got it all” and no sign of anything else.Cancer free! Two layers of stitches and a pressure bandage applied, husband took me home to rest. Minimal pain, some stinging, but my toe has caused terrible pain. As I lay here writing this I am 5 days into healing, and will go this Tuesday for stitch removal. I have documented all with a photo each day and will add them later.

Hi there... I had very similar thing happen to me but my scar is a little under nose and to the left of mouth. I looked like a rag doll after I was all stitched up. Stitches formed a large tear drop... how fitting! I’m now on Day 13. Wound continues to get a little better every day. Now have bandage off & have been to Starbucks, etc. I get some stares as it looks rather scary right now. I’m just trying to embrace it and remember that I hate a fight with cancer and I kicked it’s Ass. :). Hang in there! :) -Sherry

Hi...Thank you for response. Sorry you are going through this, but glad you are on the road to recovery! Today is Day 11 for me, and my scar is starting to pull higher on one side and looks crooked, feels sore. Don’t know if it’s too soon to be concerned. Using vitamin E oil and light massage. I look scary too, plus still have bruising around eyes, people look...but nobody has asked what happened. Waiting for someone to ask if I’ve been in a fight. Such a roller coaster of emotions, glad we’re in the healing phase and moving forward.... Sending beautiful healing vibes your way! Chris

Thank you very much! I want to learn and help others along the way. I think we should all share our stories, if it can possibly ease someone's fears!!!! Always been my motto...

Thanks for your post and honesty. I am having Moh's on my forehead too. Was your Moh's surgeon also a plastic surgeon? After the Moh's appointment I scheduled an appointment the same day with a plastic surgeon to do the closure. Hopefully that will reduce the scarring. I did not know there could be bruising. It is awful that they have not come up with a way to prevent bruising like using a small pillow or foam the doctor could rest his hand on.

You're welcome....like to share if I can help someone. He is a certified Mohs Surgeon, it's his specialty and all he does! He did the whole procedure including 2 layers of closure, and promised it would heal great, and also provide any scar touch ups at no additional fee. I am at 1 month and it looks fantastic , but I'm taking one day at a time. One thing I will share, that I did not know, was that my horizontal cut caused my forehead above to be numb and still is.

I pride myself on honesty, and sharing experiences if I think I can ease someone’s fear. My surgeon is a Specialist in Mohs Surgery, so he did procedure and closure all at same visit. I lucked out that we have him in our area, or I would have gone to a PS. I am 1 Month into healing and very happy, with how my scar is healing. The bruising is not from them resting their arm on you or manhandling you. Gravity causes the blood from injury to move down to the eye area. It took 2 days before I noticed bruising on right eye, then it crossed over bridge of nose to left eye.... very odd and unexpected, but not a big deal considering what you’re getting fixed. The bigger thing I did not know, in my case, was my forehead was and is still numb.... only above incision, not under. Told if feeling comes back it could take a year. Been massaging like a maniac, and keeping it lubed up at all times, I think it’s helped a lot.

Thank you so much for telling all. I always thought the bruising was from them leaning their hand or arm on the patient while performing the surgery. This is actually terrible to hear. I pray that it does not happen to me.
Did you have lots of sun exposure before this BCC was discovered? Are you going to avoid the sun from now on?

Yes...,I have been a sun worshiper since my teen years, and used tanning beds regularly for years. Conflicted about avoiding the sun, I love the sun and feel so energized when outside. I live in Florida and have a pool... at this point I’m thinking I will protect my face, but still want to swim.

I am also conflicted about avoiding the sun. I live in the northeast, hate the cold winters, look forward to being out in the sun. I like having a tan, feel better when the weather is warm and the sun is shining. Although dermatologists say the sun is bad for you, the natural health community stresses the importance of getting Vitamin D from the sun.

Thank you for sharing your story. Your description of the spot on your face is eerily similar to the spot I have on my upper chest. It started as what looked like a patch of spider veins that suddenly split open. During the next 3 years it would heal, split open again and bleed, heal and bleed again and again. I told myself my skin was just too thin in that area. Well, I finally got an appointment with a dermatologist (it took months of waiting), who took a biopsy which turned out to be BCC. I am now awaiting insurance approval for Mohs surgery. I'll be so happy once this is over and gone! Your story is inspiring, and your results are superb!

Oh, 6 days post surgery. I didn't notice that time period before. Has your doctor given you any time table for when you can expect certain changes? I know genetics and smoking and age and all can play a part, but my doctor hasn't given me any "times" to go on. Has yours?

Why didn’t you go to a plastic surgeon?

Surgeon does Moh’s and plastic all in one trip. So effectively I had plastic surgery. Didn’t opt to make several trips to various surgeons, one stop made it easy.
