eating out
WORTH IT$18,000
I'd like some ideas on going out to dinner. Most of our friends have a drink or two before dinner, and every time I try to do that, I am unable to keep any of the meal down. I'd like to havea glass of wine w/friends too. Am I either going to have to drink or eat and not partake in both? I always ask for a take home box b/c I know I won't eat much of my meal, no matter what ... or I share w/my husband. Is that why they say to not drink 30 minutes before a meal? ideas, please!!

lap band
Yes, I go in monthly ... am at 7 cm now and am doing better. thanks for all the input. Part of it is that I'm home more now and am getting myself back into a healthier routine, plus I have found some protein drinks I can handle. One of them is Click Espresso in decaf or caff, and it has a very nice flavor. not so much whey that it's nasty and thick. :O

I am 70, have been overweight for some time, and decided to go w/the lapband. I lost 30# pre and post op, and have not lost an ounce since. I am on prednisone for my asthma which causes me to crave sweets ... then did a long term substitute teaching job (am a retired middle school teacher), and really got off the band wagon. Not watching WHAT I eat, and stuffing in food, or thinking about it all the time is a real issue w/me. HELP!!

I think my major issue is that I'm on long term prednisone (10 mg daily) for asthma. This summer my goal is to get down or off of it ... see if the 30# loss helps enough to keep my asthma at bay!
I go monthly for a fill ... and a chat w/Dr. White's two amazing nurses, so I have their total support and understanding. Also, I've learned to be forward and visit w/the other patients in the waiting room. It helps a lot. This is not a "quick fix", and needs one's total attention, but I wouldn't hesitate for one minute to have it again. There are days when I wish I'd gone w/the sleeve, actually ... or the by pass, but I need to learn to live w/what I chose, plus I think the eating obsessions are what really need to be dealt with here, and for all of us overeaters!!
I myself will be getting the sleeve, because I know my own personality and I know I need something final and permanent. You're right though, we all have to deal with the mental part of WLS, the addiction to food, the cravings for all the things that are bad for our bodies!
How are you doing now? We wish you the best! I have also second guessed myself few times if I should have done the sleeve also but I feel so much better already. I thought maybe I was losing slower than normal but doctor says I am a little above where I was expected, I have not been hungry but couple times have had a sweet tooth.
maybe ur band is not tight enough yet. I thought i was tight and like u i would stuff food and but when it got really tight i still kept trying but I was miserable, back hurting & throwing up all the time and it was happening so often that I got tired of fighting against my band and gave up on eating alot of stuff i wasnt suppose to. are you going monthly for ur fills to make sure u have the right fit. it might help to go to some support group session and join the lapband forums. I make sure I dont bring the sweets in the house if u just have to have something go out and by 1 ie. dont buy a box of ice cream sanwiched or a bag of chips ahoy just go to the convenience store and get 1 ice cream sandwich or 1 small pack of cookies. I also keep it limited too 1 sweet thing in my house a week but i also have enough ppl to help eat it up so i wont. And if i want something bad that im not suppose to have I only cook it when theres a function so I can have a taste and let everyone else eat the rest. & keep alot of sweet healthier things for u that just as quick to grab as junk food when ur craving like fruit cups, yogurt w/ fruit on the bottom really helps me, pudding, jello, the protein shakes, flavored instant oatmeal. & whatever u do dont beat urself up after u have one bad thing because it'll only make u have more. celebrate small things like " i only ate 2 cookies that better than when i use to eat the whole pack" sorry so long

Hi there, welcome and thanks for sharing your journey with us!
Have you spoken with a dietician about any of this? How filled is your band? The best thing to do would be to spend a week writing down every thing you eat and drink in that week and every bit of exercise you do. From there, you can work out where you may be going wrong.
Post-op, most doctors tell you not to have any high fat, high sugar foods or drinks, cut out all alcohol and soda drinks and drink plenty of water. Also, Most meals shouldn't consist of more than 1 cup of food at a time.
If you're only 6 months post-op, it may be a good idea to keep a food/exercise journal for a week and then speak with your doctor/dietician, to go through it with you and make a plan for you going forward.
MyFitnessPal is great, I've just started using it my self and it's awesome to keep track of what you're doing and you can print out reports, if you wanted to show your doctor, etc.
Obviously you need your medication, but is there anything the doctor can do to help with the cravings? Or maybe you could eat something that tricks your body into thinking you've had dessert type foods, like: sugar-free jello, sugar-free pudding, etc?
That sounds really nice! It's definitely good to get creative with your foods and try new things.
Do you have anymore follow-up appointments planned with your doctor?
