My Gastric Bypass Journey

Just wondering what you would recommend for myself...

Just wondering what you would recommend for myself as the clinic I've been going to really has been pushing me to go for the sleeve. My insurance doesn't require the 3-6 months dr supervised weight loss monthly visits so that's out of the picture. I have already accomplished everything that is required by the dr office to submit to insurance except for the fact that my BP has been elevated the past couple times I've gone in so now they want a cardiac clearance, which I have scheduled for next week and also got put on some Stronger BP medicine.
So about myself, I am 22, mother of one. 5'7 weighing 245.
I've been told by many that I carry my weight well, so I often get strange looks if we talk about what I weigh. My sister had gastric bypass 7-8years ago and always says it's the best thing she ever did. My cousin also had the same surgery so it's obviously been what Ive been pushing for myself since I have the first hand experience on what to expect and the major weight loss that accompanies it. The sleeve doesn't quite interest me because of the weight loss stories being s fluctuating yet they have said it has so many less risks since it is a lower risk procedure vs the gastric bypass. I have always been a single mother of my little one who is just turning 2 this Month, so I'm just wondering what everyone's opinion on this is and what would they recommend to me! Thanks!

All I can say is they claim with gastric bypass that you will loose 70% of your excess weight, gastric sleeve they say 50% and lap band only 30%. Me I am 41 mother of one she is 17 and I will be two weeks post op tomorrow. I'm 5 ft 8 start weight 278, after two week on clear fluids was 261 for surgery and I weigh 252 today. I wanted real results and if your going threw surgery why not go for the one with best forecasted results? I wish you luck with your choice, Deanna

Thank you! That's the way I've been looking at it as well, along with long term goals and health factors! Thank you and best of luck on your results! I'm excited hopefully for my surgery in the next couple months!

I had the sleeve in December, 2014. I only lost about 30 pounds of the 50 I wanted to, and I have since gained back 16 of those pounds, for a total loss of only about 14 pounds. I eat very healthy and work out 3-4 times/week. Very depressing. Going back for a mini-gastric bypass, but very concerned about the short and long-term side effects!

Just wondering if you have made your mind up about what choice you were going to have, I'm happy to say that with my gastric bypass I have lost 22.5 pounds in 27 days! I'm honestly happy I had it done. Keep us updated, best of luck Deanna

Hi! Thanks for your comment! I actually went ahead in choosing the gastric bypass. I'm awaiting insurance approval I'm hoping this week I will get that life changing phone call! When did you get your procedure done?
May 23, 2017
I had my gastric bypass done April 18, 2017 that was 35 days ago best decision ever. Hope you get that call soon and it's good news! Trust me worst part for me was the 14 day liquid diet before my surgery, only because of the few options your aloud to have and no chewing. So best advice is to get some gum to chew I know it sounds silly but you will miss chewing. Keep us updated have fingers crossed for you, Deanna

Yeah my doctor requires ten days of that liquid diet. What were your favorite things to eat while on that? I'm very excited, especially reading and seeing everyone's life changing stories.

This is me right now. I've never had a big belly but I have huge love handles, big arms and fat thighs and legs. I do have implants, I got them when I was 18 and now I am about to be 23. I have saline so I'll go next year to change them out to silicone. ????

Hi! You've made the right decision. I am almost 4 weeks after bypass, and though the beginning was rough, and it's not easy in general, it would have been the same with a sleeve. I went with bypass because of terrible GERD and a small hiatal hernia. In the end the bypass was enough to solve that problem, without repairing the hernia. Also, my hypercholesterolemia reversed itself immediately, and for the first time in all my adult years, my lipid panel is normal! Prepare yourself for a smaller weekly loss than average, as your starting weight is not that high, and you lose in ratio, but the end result is the same. I started with a BMI of 36.4, and today it's 33.9. Good luck, and keep us posted!

JoyMia20, just wondering how you are doing since having your surgery? You started at the same height and close to weight as I am, so I'm curious how much you've been losing.
