I am a +60 year old woman who has had two children. I've exercised all my life and thought
I'd NEVER get a tummy tuck. I'd heard the tales about recovery and did not want to take that much time out of my exercise routine. Plus, when I was standing up straight, it did not look like I needed one.
Never say never. I am now four weeks, 2 days out and I am sooooo glad I did it. My tummy and waist have returned to my youth. Also, amazingly, my legs look better -- tighter, younger!!!!
The surgery went well. My surgeon removed about 3/4 of a pound of skin off my mid section. I spent two nights in the hospital. I was only scheduled for one night but I thought the pain was hell on earth and said no way am I leaving!!! I had requested the exparel block -- my ps tried to talk me into a pain pump but I didn't want another item hanging out of my body. I also requested the progressive tension sutures and my ps insisted on one tiny drain. It was removed on Friday following surgery on Tuesday.
My biggest fear of the surgery was nausea after surgery. I took an Amend pill (used by chemotherapy) patients and had a motion sickness patch behind my ear. My first thought after awakening was "I'm not sick!"
I had some swelling in the hospital on the second day. My feet looked so fat! After that, only minimal swelling the first week on my tummy. It's looked pretty darn good.
My appetite left me in the hospital. I ate very little the first several days and concentrated on getting protein into my body. Sometimes, I could only drink 1/2 a protein drink but tried to get at least 60g of
protein a day. I stayed away from simple carbs and tried for less than 60g of carbs per day. I ate fat i.e. bacon, avocados, cheese. I weighed 120 starting the procedure and today weigh around 114. I'm 5'3" so that is a reasonable weight for me.
Being short, I did not need a toilet apparatus for lowering to toilet. A friend loaned me a fancy walker and I loved being able to cruise the house with it. I tried to cruise around every time I got up to go to the bathroom which was fairly frequent because I drank a lot of water. I really wanted to try and cleanse the chemicals from my body. I take a lot of supplements (vitamins, minerals, etc.) so a few good swallows after every pill would have me drinking 16 to 24 oz several times a day.
I have a temperpedic bed that has a remote to go up and down (like a hospital bed)!! It's a split king so I had the bed up around my shoulders and up under my knees. Who knew something like that would come in so handy. Even with the bed, my husband would help me up the first five days I was home. It hurt and I had a pretty bad nerve pain in my left groin. The nerve pain went on for the first 3 weeks but amazingly just like my ps promised, it went away!
My turnaround point was around three weeks. I just got tired of laying around and started getting out more. At first, in the evenings, I felt like I was being pulled apart at the seams but now, not so much.
I even had a glass of wine or two with friends.
I started walking at four weeks out -- just a mile and one-half. I think I will stick with this for the first week and up that each week. I hope to go back to weight training and pilates at eight weeks out. I have a weight trainer and think I will take private pilates sessions for at least one month to see how the surgery affects my performance.
I haven't taken pictures but when I go to ps for 3 mo post op appointment I will be happy to get my before and after pics and post at that time.
Oh, one more important fact (I think). After three weeks, my ps started the Embrace Scar Therapy bandages on my incision. I've loved them from the first. After I walked out of the office, I could feel them pulling the incision together. Such a secure feeling. The incision has always been a thin line but I'm an obsessive personality and I've seen some of the incisions that have split on this site so I won't be comfortable until I'm six months out and have no scar.
I scar well anyway but my ps thinks this will make the incision blur to practically nothing. Whether it does or not, I'm happy with my decision to have this surgery. I feel blessed to be able to afford it and very blessed to have had a reasonably easy time.
I am in awe of some of the stories of people running after two weeks or going back to work after two weeks. I couldn't have done that. Maybe it's my age and I think I'm not as strong or as pain tolerant as I thought but you guys rock.

Dr. Taylor has been terrific. She has seen me at least once a week since the surgery and responds to any questions via text within minutes. She told me from the beginning, she tries to give you a 90% improvement. She says if you go for the home run, you sometimes run into problems with surgery being too tight or not healing well. As far as I'm concerned, she hit a home run with me. I'd recommend her to anyone for any type of surgery.
