RB2012
WORTH IT$12,500

I went to see four other well regarded surgeons before finding and selecting Dr. Gruber for my deviated septum and secondary rhino. Three of them put me through a typical horse and pony show with high powered sales pressure, both over simplifying my case difficulty and over pushing the other services such as botox and laser stuff. The fourth, took one look at me and said…"I can't help you. You need to go see Dr. Gruber because he wrote the book on your case".

My appointment with Dr. Gruber was short yet extremely thorough. I picked him 10 minutes into the conversation because he immediately picked up on what needed to be done and explained why. In his office, he has a shelf of text books he authored and yes, he has literally written the book on rhinoplasty. He does 4 surgeries a week, all year long, and has many years of experience, a good eye and a strong desire to help people.

On the day of surgery, Dr. Gruber's staff was awesome. His nurse and anesthesiologist really worked well together and with me. No one likes surgery, right? I've had 6 (now 7) surgeries in my short life and this one had the best team in play. Dr. Gruber was also very engaged, I like how he asks the right questions.

My case was complicated and the results are better than I hoped for. I lived for eleven years with the results of some previous moron surgeon's horrible mistake and now I am human-looking again. My nose is now perfectly shaped and sized and has great symmetry. Dr. Gruber is about 20% more than others up front, but he submitted to my insurance so the net cost will be less than the lot. I'm very grateful that I got a referral to Dr. Gruber.

Thanks for sharing on RealSelf. I'm glad this went so well for you!

What went wrong with your initial rhinoplasty/

Well, first of all, it was done in Thailand by a doctor who spoke little English. He didn't really explain the plan and I was too young to ask for clarification. The medical records weren't kept, so it's not actually clear what he did. What he did NOT do was look at me face-on before finishing his procedure. I came out w one nostril 1.5 mm higher than the other. I cried in his office and he apologized and said he would redo it, however I declined fearing he'd make it worse. Over time, my tip began to sink and sort of start to slide off the end of my nose. Finally, the hump he was supposed to have removed came back. On top of that, I had a deviated septum. Dr. Gruber managed to correct several functional and aesthetic aspects of my nose concurrently. I see a nose that is very very different, certainly much more change than I anticipated. And, beautifully, it looks so natural that hardly anyone has noticed! Love it!!

When did you have this surgery/revision? Wow, you had 6 previous rhinos? Oh my...you poor thing. I'm curious as to which other surgeons you saw as I am looking for good surgeons in this area. Any chance you'd be willing to show us some before/after photos? I'm so glad to hear that it worked out so well but sorry to hear that you had to wait 11 years! Finally, a happy ending for you! Wonderful!

Only two of the surgeries were rhinos :). I don't really have any good things to say about the other surgeons I interviewed. I found them all through google searches and online reviews (which were favorable). Dr. Gruber was the only surgeon that I was referred to. Once I met him in person, I was able to determine he was the right fit. I'd recommend short listing 3-5 doctors and researching their track record and then meeting them in person. I'm thrilled! I'll post pictures at some point.

Hi, I am just seeing this post now. Did you end up having surgery? I am looking at Gruber also for a revision. I had a primary where I had originally broke my nose but the doctor I went to wasn't a facial specialist and I ended up with a much wider tip and two collapsed nasal valves. I have seen 8-10 doctors in LA but a lot seem like a sales pitch. I have narrowed it down to Dr Jay Calvert ( expensive but seems to be one of the best ) only thing was it seemed a little like a sales pitch because they dropped the price a few times in 5 minutes. Dr Flemming ( super nice, will get it covered by insurance but his age worries me a bit, his hands are a bit shaky ) and lastly Dr Hilinski in SD, he went to Harvard and worked under Dean Toriumi. Only issue with Hilinski is he is super short with any conversations, but I just think he doesn't have much of a personality

The rest I saw seemed were either not nose specialist or was a total sales pitch like Profiles Beverly Hills.

Thanks for any help

You look beautiful! Congrats! Out of curiousity was it open or closed? And it doesn't look like it but did he have to do any complicated grafting?
February 5, 2013
Yes. He had to prop up my tip again. You can kindof see it was sliding off the end of my nose there. He worked on me until he got the result he wanted, using intuition and artistic eye. He had a very creative approach to knowing when to stop. He used cartilage from my septum.

Your nose looks amazing. Can you tell me when you had the procedure done? and did you have any swelling?

It was done in December 2012. There was a LOT of swelling, was a difficult three days post surgery. Worth it though!

Hi,

I am just seeing this post now about Dr Gruber.
I wanted to just check in with you and see how your nose is holding up, it is crazy that he doesn't have more reviews.

Your nose looks so beautiful...how did your dr. Deal with the scar tissue from previous op? I'm conserned about that, I might have to do mine again...my dr. Decided to put my nose on left side of my face, and reduced my nostrils when I had no problem with their size. I feel mutilated and depressed.
