My Background:
I suffered from moderate cystic acne for eight years that caused boxcar and icepick scaring and as well as hyper-pigmentation on my cheeks. Now that I'm finally clearing up I talked to my dermatologist and he told me the only solution for the severity of my indented scars (which are quite shallow, compared to what I've seen) is Fraxel, but because I obviously scar pretty easily I was super afraid to try any treatment. But I got a discount from Lifebooker for a Laser Genesis facial and, though my derm said I shouldn't expect to see any results with anything but Fraxel, I decided to try Laser Genesis as a low-cost and low-down time way to get my feet in the water of laser treatments.
My Recommendation:
I had one session. It was a few hours ago. My skin looks a tiny bit better, actually, even though it's recommended as you know to have several sessions done to see results. Is it enough that someone else would notice? Maybe not, but I wear so makeup in my day-to-day life that it's hard to say. But I wasn't even red afterward, and seeing that I had no negative side effects, I would therefore be willing to do the treatment again. If you are scared of scaring (or leaving more damaged than you went in) please don't hesitate to try this treatment if you've been cleared for it by your dermatologist. My esthetician said "Laser Genesis is a procedure that can only help. It will not hurt the skin." Would I have seen better results if the laser had been hotter? Maybe. But for what it's worth, I'll take my 5% less indented scars and slightly less red marks with a smile and a sigh of relief. Don't be afraid to communicate with your doctor to ensure you get the best treatment possible for your skin! That's my advice.
The Procedure:
So before I let anyone get within an inch of my face I told my esthetician that I have a history of cystic acne and that's what my scaring is from. I told her my dermatologist told me not to expect to see any results with anything besides Fraxel, and I told her I was incredibly afraid of scaring and I wanted to do Laser Genesis just as a procedure to introduce myself to the possibility of something more extreme. She was understanding of my skin sensitivities, and did a small patch and asked me about my comfort level before she did my whole face. She repeatedly asked if I was okay, and it was honestly quite a relaxing feeling. It's not too hot, you shouldn't feel any discomfort, and if it feels otherwise I would tell your doctor it's uncomfortable and you'd like a lower setting. Nothing touches your face directly. Maybe that's obvious, but it's just the gentle feeling of the heat on your skin-- there wasn't any machinery touching my skin. I think the distance between your face and the device makes a difference, so ask to see how that works before you put your goggles on if you are unsure. She finished my procedure with a cooling cream that smelled like mint, and a little sunblock. No redness, seriously. I was expecting to be red, but I wasn't. I was also expecting it to hurt, but it doesn't, and after talking with my esthetician today it definitely shouldn't.
