Noticeable Lip Lift Scar

Noticeable Lip Lift Scar

WORTH IT
I am writing this review in hopes of helping someone else who may be dealing with a noticeable scar after a botched lip lift. I spent several years trying to find a solution and ultimately had to have a revision done (which finally fixed it). I had my initial lip lift with Dr. Trussler, and this is my honest review about my first lip lift experience.

I found Dr. Trussler online, he had many 5 star reviews and his staff raved about his lip lifts. They said he did tons of them and that it would be a quick in-office procedure with minimal downtime. The staff and facility were all super nice, so I decided to go with Dr. Trussler. The day of the procedure there must have been a dozen other folks line up there for a lip lift, I guess he does them in batches. It was a very quick in-and-out process. Right afterwards my face was so swollen, it was the most swollen I have ever seen it and I have had many procedures before in the past including a rhinoplasty and my face has never been that swollen. They prescribed pain meds and told me to take over the counter paint killers too, but even after taking the max dose of everything I was still in so much pain and my face was so swollen that I could not sleep for days. I was told it would be 5 days of downtime, but my face remained swollen for weeks. The suture area was weeping with pus and blood for many days. Then after a month the sutures started to "spit" out. And the wound started opening. I went back multiple times for check ups and they said that this happened sometimes that the sutures are rejected. In any case this left me with a nasty lip lift scar that was raised and hyper pigmented. I couldn't even cover it up with make up as the skin there had weird texture and wouldn't hold the concealer. I do appreciate Dr. Trussler being honest with me about the results being undesirable and he didn't try to make excuses. They offered me laser treatments to try and fix it (I think I must have had laser on the area for over a year with them) BUT the scar stayed the same. I think the laser was another negative to the experience since I had to deal with more pain and continued downtime for over a year and plan my social calendar around the laser treatments. After a year of laser the scar still looked pretty much the same. So finally they offered a revision at no cost, which I also appreciate. At first, I agreed to get the revision done with Dr. Trussler but then one of my friends talked me out of it given how bad my first scar turned out. I am really grateful she did.

About a year later, I found a different surgeon out of state to do the revision and it was NIGHT AND DAY! I honestly wasn't even going to write a review about this, but given how drastic of a difference the revision surgery was I feel compelled now to warn others.

The revision surgeon was shocked by my scar when he first saw it, he said he had never seen anything like that before there were "train track" marks all around the bottom of my nose. He warned me that since I already had scar tissue in that area that I was likely to get another scar but he was confident that it would still look much better. During the revision, I am not sure what the tool was but the revision surgeon used a heated tool to help seal up the scar. He also barely put any stitches in there. Afterwards, the next day my face looked totally normal. I had hardly any swelling, no pain, no bleeding at all. I took zero pain meds and the first time I literally maxed out my pain meds. I also noticed that the only stitches the revision surgeon were placed were inside my nostril and there was nothing outside of that - whereas my first lip lift with Dr. Trussler I had stitches all cross the entire bottom of my nose. I mean when I say NIGHT AND DAY, this was NIGHT AND DAY! I did have a small scar after the revision for about 6 months, but after that scar went away and now for the first time in years my skin under my nose looks normal.

Here is my advice to others dealing with a lip lift scar on what worked and what didn't after spending 3 years and thousands of dollars.

What DIDN'T work:
- Lasers (I did fractional and CO2 at Dr. Trusslers office, and also did Erbium and Morpheus 8 at another place) barely did anything for the scar
- Silicone tape (doesn't stay on in area, barely made any difference)
- Scar gels (didn't help, and some smelled really bad having it so close to nose)
- Bio oil (worked to flatten scar a bit while, but as soon as I stopped applying it everyday the scar came back)

What DID work:
- Revision surgery (I would honestly recommend doing that ASAP, instead of wasting the time and money doing what I did and trying all these lasers and things that didn't help)
- Vitamin C (it did help lighten the color of the scar)
- PRX chemical peels (this I recently stumbled upon now that the scar has healed, but it has made the area even more smooth)

Overall, I would recommend the procedure for a lip lift, but I would also recommend choosing your surgeon wisely!
