Since having a retainer as a teenager and failing...

Since having a retainer as a teenager and failing to keep it in, I have always been self-conscious about my crossed front teeth. It makes me a very awkward smiler in photos, I cringe at some of the faces I end up pulling! The front teeth were my priority but my ortho pointed out that the problem stemmed from overcrowding and I also have an overbite :( so not exactly a quick, simple fix! I opted for Invisalign (at a cost of £3400) as I couldn't bear having metal braces, I would feel so conscious of people looking at me. I have 14 attachments with elastics to correct my overbite. I have been given packs 1-5 of 27 so keeping my fingers crossed that in 56 weeks I will be able to smile without awkwardness!

Day one
I feel VERY sorry for myself. My jaw is aching badly and I HATE taking the aligners in and out (the elastics are the biggest problem). Feeling very overwhelmed by the sheer commitment of looking after these braces. I'm the mother of a toddler so I'm usually very disorganised when it comes to my own needs.

However I have read lots of reviews on this sure which have given me enough positivity to keep going.... I think....

Hello, today is also my first day with invisalign, I'm in the UK, too (with two toddlers so I know what you mean). I don't find it so bad - taking in and out is a pain (literally) but otherwise pleased that they are hardly noticeable and I don't lisp as bad as I feared I would. Like you I had braces before, both pros and cons I guess. Hope it will get better for you.

Thank you! Do you have elastics? They are the biggest pain- getting them in and out is awkward and they make them so much more noticeable. Though still a thousand times better than the metal train tracks! :)

Thanks for joining us, Rachel!  The aching should dissipate somewhat over the next couple of days.  Usually it's 2-3 for a new aligner, with occasional outliers.  In the future, it's helpful to put in a new tray just after your evening hygiene, so that you won't need to take it out for a good 8 hours at a stretch.  The pain during those initial 8 hours is much worse :).  Also, did your doctor give you aligner chewies?

As for the toddler, I feel your pain :).  I had toddler twins while I was doing this (and a 5-year-old).  I found that it didn't really make a difference, because you save time on meals ;).  In other words, you try to eat as few meals as possible, so you can spend as little time on hygiene as possible, and all that extra time is used on your kids, so it's kind of a wash.  I'm the least organized person on the planet, but even I was able to make it work.  I never managed a consistent schedule or anything, but you get used to it.  Just know that the days of grazing--if you ever did that--are over. No more finishing up all the uneaten meals your kids leave throughout the day.  Maybe you don't do that, but I used to, LOL!

I look forward to following your progress!  When you get your attachments--assuming you will--the pain will probably be a little worse again for a while.  How much is your overbite, by the way?  My daughter is in Damon braces and has a 100% overbite, but I can't see yours cause your mouth is open :D.

Hi there, thanks for the welcome. I'm on Day 3 and the pain is definitely less. I have 14 attachments already so I guess I got it over with in one go! To be honest I think the elastics are the biggest problem so far. They are really annoying to put in and the majority of the remaining discomfort is from the pressure they put on my jaw. Plus the 'hooks' rub really badly on the inside of my lips but I guess I have to toughen up :) I am a constant grazer so in theory having Invisaligns should help me maintain a more consistent diet- however so far I have been gorging during mealtimes as I know I won't get to eat until the next meal. I'm coping ok though. Not sure about my overbite, my ortho didn't go into it too much (or maybe I didn't listen properly!). Not sure if things are done a bit differently here in the UK, he didn't give me that much info on what to expect- just told me to make sure I wear them for 22 hours a day. I'm convinced my front teeth are already a little less crooked, wishful thinking! This community has been GREAT, I honestly think I would have taken them out on the first day without reading all the reviews. Thank you all :)

Getting the attachments right at the start does make for a difficult beginning, but you won't have to go through that second hurdle.  You might try orthodontic wax on those hooks, just until your mouth toughens up a bit.

A lot of people talk about the Invisalign diet, but I, like you, quickly got used to just gorging when I could eat and any losses quickly reversed ;).

I think most doctors don't go into specifics unless you ask, so that's not odd.  Just wondering if you knew :D.

So glad you found the reviews helpful!!!!!!!  Yay! :):)

Rachel, your crossed front teeth are not as bad as mine. I'm doing this at 65. I hate it but it is a necessary evil. I don't have bands though. I wonder why. Good luck to you.

Hi there! I haven't updated my journey but I am getting on much better 3 weeks in. The bands are the worst part so it's lucky you don't have them. I guess they're to correct my overbite - personally I didn't really care about that but the orthodox said we needed to correct as much as possible to ensure long-lasting results. Good luck to you too :)

Hi Rachel, you gave the same ortho as me !! And you are in good hands, he is a perfectionist ! It's very early days and all this feeling of being overwhelmed will go don't worry . I had a hell of a time with the Elastics more than the retainer itself . I emailed Dr Brook at midnight telling him I'd had enough and that they wouldn't stay put. He was very sweet and really put me at ease. Aswell as arranging a metal hook to be attached to stop them pinging off at any given opportunity. What has encouraged me this whole time is documenting the changes with pictures . I didn't see any real change until around tray 12. But you have to stick at it. I have been told I'll need 33 trays and I'm on my 19th now . Good luck :)

Hi Katherine, wow what a small world! That's very reassuring to hear, thank you. I am on tray 2 of 27 although I don't know whether that's just the first 27 and I might need more. I'm getting into the routine of having them but the elastics are the most annoying part. I'll certainly be sticking with it :)

Hi Rachel, I've just had my impressions done so waiting for my clincheck and treatment plan. I have an awful feeling that I will need elastics too. I had elastics with my metal brace in school and it was awful then. Just keep telling yourself it'll all be worth it in the end!
