AVOID Microneedling!!!

I had troubling scars around my temples and t-zone...

I had troubling scars around my temples and t-zone. My complexion in the cheek area showed a little redness but was fairly smooth overall.
I was told that microneedling was the safest procedure available for these issues and that it would not leave marks. That the procedure would do an amazing job at smoothing out tone and bumpy surfaces. I spoke with my doctor and her assistant at several appointments before deciding to go forward with it. This ended up being a huge mistake.
It's now 6 months later and I actually find it difficult to look at my face in the mirror. I have pin holes across my entire face. When I smile hundreds of little wrinkles form as the skin bunches up between the scar tissue caused by the needles. It looks extremely disturbing. On top of that issue, the temple scars that I previously had were not helped in the long run at all!
I came to this site and looked for negative microneedling stories. I also searched other sites. Overall, the feedback was pretty positive. It convinced me to take a chance on it. I want to let you know that I would avoid ever doing it again at all costs. It's horribly aged my skin and made my face look super creepy. Please avoid this procedure!
I'm looking into chemical peels that might help. Overall I feel like I may have irreversibly damaged my skin.

Hey there, sorry to hear about your terrible results with microneedling. I just wanted to ask, were you treated with a dermaroller or dermastamp (e.g. dermapen). Which length needle was used and what were the post treatment care like? I'm also looking into microneedling with dermapen on my acne scars but reading negative reviews like this is making me have second thoughts despite the overwhelming postive reviews in general with this treatment. From my research microneedling is indeed an entry level treatment and probably the safest treatment with minimal, not none, but minimal risk.
October 18, 2017
That's what I was told about the Dermapen as well. I don't remember the needles dimensions, sorry.

The post care treatment included staying out of the sun and using sun block religiously for quite a few months after the procedure. The details are a little fuzzy at this point.

In terms of risk, I was told the exact same thing but it didn't work out that way. My girlfriend at the time actually asked me not to do it but my scars bothered me my entire life so I thought that it was worth the risk. I realize now that the procedure was an enormous mistake. If I could choose between my old scars and this I would choose the scars hands down. It's hard to imagine how creepy an unnatural texture across your skin can be.

I hope you don't make the same mistake.
October 18, 2017
You still didn't really answer, did you use the dermapen or the stamp or roller ?
October 18, 2017
They use a Rejuvapen.
October 19, 2017
:( if you read about skin pens on owndoc, they discuss why they can do so much damage. Im sorry this happened to you! The safest way is with a roller and even more with a stamp, which is what I use
October 19, 2017
Thanks. I missed that.
October 20, 2017
Just wondering, with the microneedling you did, did you notice any small holes or pricks in the skin afterwards? Since micro needling is essentially controlled injury with needles in your skin, I presume there are some small holes or miniscure dents left after the treatment. If so, did it go away with time? That's one major concern I have with microneedling- what if these holes are left on my skin even after a few weeks/months.
October 20, 2017
The holes didn't appear right away. Immediately after the procedure my skin was tight, a little red and plump. It looked as if I didn't have any acne scars. As the swelling went away the scars reappeared in full force and months later i started noticing tons of wrinkles on my face. Upon closer inspection they turned out to be caused by thousands of little microneedle scars all over my face. They're now obvious from about 3-5 feet away. It looks like my skin is covered in large black heads everywhere. The sight of seeing large pores where they typically aren't visible at all is very disturbing.

You can see others posting similar stories. The procedure can produce an orange skin type of texture across your face.

The upside is very limited and the potential downsides are horrendous.
October 20, 2017
Thanks for your speedy response. Sigh. It seems like with every treatment there's always the risk of something going wrong, even if it is rare... I would consider laser but price and having Asian skin type limits my choices.
October 23, 2017
Did the rejuvapen your doctor used include a Radio Frequency/RF?
October 23, 2017
you mean Asian skin has potential of adverse effects towards laser or other aggressive treatments?
October 23, 2017
Sorry, I don't recall a rf if the question was posed toward me.
October 24, 2017
Yes, this is the case for ethnic skin types. That's why usually less aggressive treatments are used on people with this skin type. Common effects are PIH or skin discolouring.

I fixed my own skin with microneedling after a doctored destroyed it 3 years ago with his careless attitude. I went to several doctors afterwards who were clueless and gave me bleaching creams and IPL which only made it worse. After I stopped trusting these doctors and put matters into my own hand I stumbled upon microneedling after reading studies upon studies. I started with 0.25mm and moved onto 0.5mm, in just 2 months I've so far fixed my skin 80% as opposed to the 0% or worsening I recieved from almost 3 years of dermatologists advice. I also believe the injuries people get from microneedling is from "professionals" going too aggressive on your skin to achieve more "drastic" results to please impatient customers and provide amazing before/after photographs for advertisement. That's why I would never trust a clinic with microneedling, and I rather do it myself, slowly but surely. I don't expect drastic results, although I've had results beyond any expectation so far. I'm willing to do 0.5mm for years if it can get my skin back to normal risk-free rather than risking to worsen my skin by doing an aggressive microneedling or laser treatment at some clinic. You are your own best doc if you just be careful, responsible and do your research.
May 16, 2018
PS: The manual stamp is much safer than the electronic needle pen they use in offices for quite obvious reasons. You can't possibly cause any microtearing when you insert and exert before moving the stamp - an automated needle pen would cause microtearing as you have no control over the insertion and exertion of the needles whilst moving the device horizontally. They claim it's better than dermaROLLING, which is true, but it's actually worse than a manual dermaSTAMP. Clinics don't use a manual stamp because a) it takes forever to use b) it looks much less advanced, and it'll have people realise "why am I paying someone $200 for doing something that looks more simple than brushing my teeth?"
May 25, 2018
I was going to try using a derma roller to repair the tearing from Microneedling on my upper lip area. I have several different sized needles too and was going to start slowly and use the lowest needle. Can you give me any tips such as how often I should do it and what products you use?? I’ve had 2 treatments at a spa and she used too long of length needles, now I’m looking wrinkled!! Mostly above my lips, I’m so
Upset!! I did my own dermarolling at home and was happy so I thought getting it done more aggressively would further my progress, I was so wrong! I’m hoping, like you, I could slowly repair the damage better myself. Please help!!
May 25, 2018
Urim I sent you a private message, any help you are willing to offer would be greatly appreciated
July 5, 2018
You couldn't have described it better. What a nightmare, incredible.
July 5, 2018
Urlm That is such a good point! I've been using a stamp from Nurse Jamie and you could hardly see any changes but I am patient. The texture around my eyes is the most damaged part, sadly.
October 18, 2017
this is microneedling with pen right? i also would like to reverse my laser damage with microneedling. i think though dermaroller is an old traditional method , reading the reviews here, it's fairly safer and less downtime than TCA peels?
October 18, 2017
In terms of downtime, I was red and a little swollen for a day or so but not to the point that I was embarrassed to go out initially. The short term effect is that your skin will look plump and tight. The long term effect could be a disgusting texture, wrinkles everywhere and hyper pigmentation. This was done with a pen and not a roller.

Honestly, from my experience, I didn't see any long term benefits from the procedure. There are others on this site that have even worse results. Remember that it can't be reversed after it's done.
October 19, 2017
thanks for sharing Dear. the doctors need to acknowledge these and yet they're still selling the service since it might cost more thus, benefiting them more than traditional method such as subcission vs laser; dermaroller vs dermapen. i wonder if they ever test these products enough as there are as early as 2nd treatment already causing fat loss and wrinkles.
May 24, 2018
You should look into the more advanced microneedling like vivace rather than the pen
October 19, 2017
i really wonder if microneedling with dermaroller have the same negative effect or other negative effect (aside from unexperienced operator, bad quality needle/tool, unhygienic tool)?
October 19, 2017
The Rejuvapen needle is only used once. The problem is that some people scar, lose skin elasticity, lose fat, experience hyper pigmentation or other complications when the skin is injured hundreds of times.

I've used skin peels, lasers, and microneedles now. I've finally come to accept one truth, when my skin is injured it never heals 100 percent. Which is why I probably experienced acne scars in the first place.

The problem is that I brought that observation up with my doctor repeatedly and I was told that this procedure would be different. That the injuries caused by these needles would be so small that it couldn't possibly do harm.

In the future, I need to stand my ground to make sure that I'm not pressured or lied to.

Others have similar stories on this site. I would recommend listening to them. If not, please just test the device on a small area, and let it heal for 6 months. It will take some time but it's better than damaging and adding 10 years to your skin for the rest of your life.
October 23, 2017
i think i have the same skintype as yours. easily scarred and slow healing period. i agree we could not rely only on doc's advice as we know our skin better. i went to a reputable doc and the laser damage still happened to me as with many others here. from my experience, the doc missed diagnose my type of skin that is prone to redness, slow regeneration process etc though it looks healthy from the outside. we need to trust ourselves more and participate in the process of the treatment. thanks for reminding me that :)
October 23, 2017
by the way i forgot to ask what type of Fitzgerald skin you have? i'm a type IV-V yellow with red undertone Asian skin. I think this type of skin could have potential adverse effect with laser or any other too aggressive treatment.

Hi there,
So sorry to hear you have had bad experience with microneedling procedure.
I don’t know where you had the procedure done which caused your skin damage, but believe me it’s not the microneedling pen that causing your lost volume and elasticity, it the person who done the procedure on you.
Microneedling or microneedling with prp supposed to HELP improve your skin, plump, smooth, brighten, lifting scars etc .
I can send you pictures of before and after from clients like 13 yrs old with acne scars, 40s with skin rejuvenation, 50s and 60s with improving of skin elasticity and skin texture.

Hopefully you can find someone who understand and know what they’re doing to help you.

Cheer and peace:)

It might help others but it damaged my skin permanently. It been well over a year and I'm still suffering. Only fraxerl laser will remove the damage. This opinion from the reputable dermatologist who did the procedure.

i tried to fix my laser damage with microneedling with eclipse micropen and i think it added more to the damage. :(
October 20, 2017
I'm really sorry to hear that! More people need to know that this Not a safe procedure!

The potential upsides weren't even sold as being able to fully cover the scars.

If anyone is undecided please don't go forward with it.
February 4, 2018
Sounds like it! I hope it gets better. Don't look every day thinking it's going to look a lot better. It will take time. Take care of it for now and hopefully, in the future, it will look better. Good luck to you!

Micro-needling doesn't effect the texture of your skin. All it does is stimulate collagen growth. If the procedure caused this kind of damage maybe you should look into something more around the lines of re-texturing and not stimulation ( aka Chem-peel being another "stimulation" ). The results of these kinds of collagen stimulation therapies are not permanent. You will always need maintenance therapies, meaning you will need them again and again. This is why the effects wore off after 6 months, this is usually the time you will need it again. If you want truly permanent results then your only options are invasive and highly aggressive surgical procedures. Surgical procedures will have an extremely high amount of down time after and are usually too expensive for the average person. This is why most plastic surgeons and dermatologists don't recommend these treatments. These treatments include Dermabrasion, Excision, Subscision, and Skingrafts. With Dermabrasion the procedure if done correctly will remove all the layers of skin down to the smoothest layer and you will regrow fresh layers of skin on top of it that is free of scar tissue. The reasons Micro-needling or lasers can not do this are because they only puncture tiny holes into the scars. This leaves the majority of original scar tissues behind causing the regrowth of tiny amounts of skin back into these scars. Sometimes this effect can cause tiny scars inside of the older scars and overtime this can build up onto itself. In your specific case and with your expectations I would recommend meeting with a Board Certified plastic surgeon and having him evaluate and grade your scaring. Understanding your type of scars and the extent of the damage, you can then discuss with him about a more permanent and effective approach.
October 21, 2017
I've thought several times about what might have been had I pursued subscision rather than years of laser treatments, peels and other approaches.

I wouldn't mind having that discussion. Whatever treatment plan discussed would have to pass an extremely high bar of scrutiny and exhibit positive results in a small area before being used widely.

Many of these treatments require healthy skin to grow back. I've found that my skin always scars when it's damaged. I worry that dermabrasion would result in what would look like burn scar tissue.

At this point I'm so disappointed from these results that I need a some time before considering any additional risks.

Thanks for the suggestions
October 24, 2017
If you scar easily there are a bunch of options that can assist you in prevention. Scars are far easier to prevent than to remove. Have you asked about corticosteroids or having injections in the post treatment care? What happens after your treatments and how aggressive you are about maintaining the proper rituals will decide on if it works or if it fails.
November 12, 2017
could you please give more detail about type of the preventative scar injection? so far i know it's only used for keloids?
February 4, 2018
Some of this sounds like pure crap! I had damage to my skin and it has been going on 2 years now. It's not any better! The collagen that developed actually developed
into small specks. After another treatment, with a brand new skinpen I must add; turned the small specks of skin into larger white ridges that come together and make lines! They are still there, even after countless, expensive skin products, and time has made no difference. Don't say that everything will be gone in 6 months, maybe nice collagen growth, but not scar tissue that the skinpen has created!
July 5, 2018
I must disagree with your opinion. Micro-needling can effect the texture of your skin. I am living proof of this fact. Two Beverly Hills and a BH plastic surgeon would agree with me.All recommended fraxel to repair my skin. Even the MD who did my micro-needling suggested fraxel for free to fix my damage. There are several people on this post who are living proof that damage can be done my this procedure. Yes, some people have a good result, but others are getting the other end of the spectrum. The mfgs should warn people that the procedure comes with risks.

I cannot believe that someone has said laser doesn’t damage the skin and it only punctures tiny holes!!!! I wish that was true,I had laser over three years ago and the damage has been devastating!I have severe scarring, orange peel skin, huge indentations that turn into long indentations, severe fat loss and a face that no longer looks like me!It has ruined my life! Talk to others who have laser damage our lives are never the same again.Chris.
July 27, 2018
isnt Fraxel basically the same thing as micro needling only it's being done under the surface of your skin? Where the fat and elasticity lie and can't that be damaged?
March 10, 2019
I must disagree with you. Micro-needling can affect the texture of your skin. After one of a procedure and seeing three separate doctors, 2 well know Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeons and a Beverly Hills Dermatologist, I have confirmation that the above is true. I have been left with orange peel texture and pitting all over my skin where I had micro-needling. I wish that it would have dissipated after six month, but unfortunately it has not. Even the dermatologist who did the procedure said the only remedy would be fraxel laser, which she would have done for free. I want every one to know that this is a hit or miss treatment. The first time I did it....noting. The second time...deaster.
March 10, 2019
I'm sorry to say you are wrong. Microneedling can effect the texture of your skin. I am living proof. Three physicians, two Beverly Hills plastic surgeons, and one dermatologist confirmed this for me. And the dermatologist who performed the microneedling also said the only way to fix the damage was to do fraxel laser. I have orange peel texture and needle point depressions and pitting from microneedling. Before the procedure I had smooth skin. Everyone should be aware of this potential risk.

So sorry to disagree, but micro-needling can affect the texture of your skin. I have permanent scars, pin holes and a grid pattern on my neck and face. To reputable physicians confirmed this. One a dermatologist and the other a plastic surgeon. And my skin has become worse over time.

In this picture one can see the abnormal skin texture that has come from microneedling. I now have these horrible pin point depressions everywhere across my face which makes it look diseased. I need to find some solution to this problem.

Hi Kaja, I am also a victim of microneedling damaged. Have you found a solution?
October 19, 2018
Still working on it. I have done a few glycolic peels and not trying retinoin too. I have an appointment in a couple of weeks to reassess my progress. My skin has improved a lot but unfortunately the damage has been done and it’s hard to repair it. All I know is that it’s getting better . I’m still a long way away from where I was but tahini proactive x
October 19, 2018
And now trying tretinoin !

With my skin it was really bizarre, because I noticed a new scar on the right side of my face but then on the left side my skin wa smooth and the pores were smoother initially, now 18months later my skin looks so dehydrated, aged, way more scarring. It looks scratchy and I know the effects of microneedling are delayed. My results look similar to what people are complaining about. Take a look t my photos and tell me what you think. I would love to know how you have treated your skin and see photos of how your skin is now. I feel like I’m crazy because everyone I see says they don’t know what I’m talking about! But I can clearly see it in certain lights it looks weird! I’m only 26 years old and my skin was much better before.
