On September 1st, 2016 I underwent a bilateral breast reduction (bilateral just means both breast needed a reduction). My surgeon was Dr. Joseph Thornton. I would highly recommend him as he is very professional and he knows what he is doing. He and his partner Dr. Lawrence Chang were voted Top Docs in Delaware Today Cosmetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery. After much research and after my initially consultation on 5/2/16, I decided on the 9/1/16 surgery date. I am extremely happy with the results. My insurance covered the majority of the cost as it was deemed medically necessary for me to have the surgery due to the physical pain that I was experiencing.

I’ve went down from a 40J in bra size to a 38DD (About 3 to 4 lbs removed from each side). I didn’t think that my breast would look so great but they certainly do. I had drains in for about a week and pain was managed with pain pills (Percocet 5mg) for about a week. I don’t like pain pills and after a week I managed the pain on my own and through ice packs. I am now more motivated than ever to start losing some excess weight and flaunting my new and improved body. I have started back at the gym doing some light walking and leg exercises. A huge weight has literally been lifted from my chest. No more back pain or shoulder pain due to huge breast. I fit clothes way better and I and much more comfortable working out at the gym. I just need to figure out how to get rid of the grooves that are in my shoulders. I am using Palmer’s cocoa butter oil for scarring on my breast and I massage it into my shoulders. My doctor gave me the ok to use shea butter or cocoa butter for my breast after 2 weeks.

There was one setback after surgery. While still in the hospital (had to stay 24 hours as normal protocol) the nurses noticed that my right breast was much more swollen than my left. They called the surgeon in after-hours because they knew the swelling was not normal especially since it was only on the right side. When the doctor evaluated the swelling he determined that I had a hemostasis, which is bleeding that needed to be stopped. This meant emergency surgery for me right away. I was quite nervous because I had eaten and my husband was not at the hospital at the time (he had to check on our children as it was their 1st day of school). The anesthesiologist reassured me that I would be fine to be put to sleep again. An hour or 2 later surgery was complete and the bleeding was stopped and I was ok to go home the next morning. The doctor had to go in and stop the bleeding from one of the many veins that were cut through. He stated that it’s only a 1% chance that this happens and I was in that 1%. He mentioned that he hadn’t had to perform this surgery in about 4 years. This is because it’s rare that patients experience this problem but it can happen.

2 ½ weeks later I am fine and my breast are healing very well. I am back to work and back to doing things around the house like cooking and light chores. I am taking it easy because I still feel sore but healing is coming along well. My husband is very happy with his new girls but no one is happier than me. Thank you Dr. Thornton!
