I have long had what I felt were really yellow...

I have long had what I felt were really yellow teeth. Because I love coffee and berries and pasta sauce and many of those things that discolor your teeth. But I have sensitive teeth - like....I can't drink or eat really cold foods. So I was worried that the sensitivity would cause trouble. My dentist's office did what I felt was a thorough evaluation of the shape of my teeth when I was in having a permanent crown put in. I mentioned I wanted to get my teeth whitened and she looked closely at the state of the enamel, etc on my teeth and said she thought I'd get good results. So I went for it.

I had this done yesterday and the procedure was exactly like many here describe it. I went in, the hygienist doing the procedure described what she was going to do and talked about how the teeth could/might feel afterward. She kept describing the "Zingers" that people sometimes feel during the 48 hours after the procedure. I told her I had sensitive teeth already and she indicated that as the procedure was going along she'd be monitoring for sensitivity. I signed some papers saying I understood the risks, etc. and she got started.

She put Vitamin E on my lips (your lips are going to be really stretched out for an hour to 1.5 hours), put a device in my mouth to separate my lips from around my teeth, applied a protectant to the areas where my teeth meet my gums and then lined my gums with cotton. She painted my teeth with the solution and then put the light on my teeth and turned it on. I had to sit pretty still but overall, the first 15 minutes (although LOOONNNNGGG) seemed fine. After 15 minutes she talked to me about how my teeth felt and, because they felt fine, she painted again and repeated. It helps if you nap. Because it's boring.

I had 4 rounds of 15 minutes and while I felt some slight sensitivity during the last 2 rounds, nothing like the zingers. Just sort of a dull ache. Once we were done, I rinsed my mouth thoroughly and took a look. A definite improvement and at that point, no sensitivity. She thought it was a great result ("They did better with this treatment than I hoped...")

I checked out and left. And walked 2 blocks and got hit with one of the zingers. So now I know what a zinger is. If you have sensitive teeth and someone sticks and ice cube on them...that is what this felt like. WOW. Yeah, like your teeth being electrocuted. I called the dentist office and they told me to come back in and sit in the chair while they painted my teeth with a flouride treatment. That did the trick. I had a couple more small zingers over the past 24 hours but nothing like that first (and only) one. They gave me flouride to go home with and I already brush with a prescription toothpaste for sensitive teeth. I am staying away from cold and hot beverages, drinking through a straw and basically trying to keep my teeth from being exposed to really cold air. (Think "don't smile in the air conditioned building.) But really it's been fine. It's been 24 hours and I fully expect it to be all good by tomorrow.

So, the long and short of it is, you probably WILL feel something but it seems (from reading reviews here) that some people just feel it way, way worse than others. I really thought I'd be one of those people because of my existing sensitivity, but it hasn't been like that at all. At the moment, I'd evaluate this as "worth it." Would I make this a "regular" thing? Meh, probably not. Now I'll just try really hard to keep them white. ;)
